S ummary . Treating seedling roots of several plant species with cultures of Azotobacter paspali changed plant growth and development and significantly increased weight of leaves and roots; effects were probably caused by plant growth regulators. Culture supernatant fluids contained indolyl-3-acetic acid, at least 3 gibberellins and 2 cytokinins. The added inoculum of A. paspali survived in plant rhizospheres for only a few weeks and no nitrogen was fixed in the root zone of young Paspalum notatum , the grass with which A. paspali is associated.  相似文献

Summary The effect of the carbamate herbicides Chlorpropham, Sulfallate and Phenmedipham, which are believed to inhibit photosynthesis, on VA mycorrhizal infection and on plant growth, were examined. Foliar spraying of Phenmedipham decreased the root concentration of total and reducing sugars and the fungal metabolism (using a staining reaction for succinate dehydrogenase as indicator) 48 h after application. However, all three carbamate herbicides tested, whether applied by foliar spray or directly to soil, did not affect the amount of VA mycorrhizal infection present at the end of the experiment. These herbicides decreased plant growth when they were applied to soil. But when the herbicides were sprayed only Phenmedipham, applied at high concentrations, decreased plant growth. Moreover, our results show that VA mycorrhizas may help plants recover from the deleterious effect of Phenmedipham.  相似文献

The presence of heat shock mannoproteins (HSMPs) reactive with sIgA was demonstrated in several C. albicans strains. The subculture of the C. albicans isolated from mucosal surfaces on Sabouraud's dextrose agar at 25 °C switched off the HSMP expression. A re-expression of the HSMPs was obtained in the same medium by shifting the temperature of incubation to 37 °C. However, expression of HSMPs in two strains isolated from deep infections was maintained during several subcultures on Sabouraud's dextrose agar at 25 °C. A glycoprotein of 200 kDa seemed to be the main HSMP reacting with vaginal sIgA. The data presented in this study suggest that factors other than temperature can influence the expression of C. albicans HSMPs and therefore these antigens should be referred as stress mannoproteins.Abbreviations HSMPs heat shock mannoproteins - MAb monoclonal antibody - sIgA secretory IgA  相似文献

The interactions between the mycorrhizal fungusGlomus mosseae, the plant pathogenPythium ultimum, and a pathogen-antagonistTrichoderma aureoviride in the rhizosphere ofTagetes erecta (marigold) were studied for their effects on plant growth in a peat-perlite substrate. Mycorrhizal fungus inoculation protected the plant againstP. ultimum, since both phytomass production and foliar development were higher in mycorrhizal plants.T. aureoviride had no effect on nonmycorrhizal plants in the presence or absence ofP. ultimum. However, more biomass was produced by mycorrhizal plants whenT. aureoviride was present, whether or not soil was infested withP. ultimum. ei]R Rodriguez-Kabana  相似文献

Summary Ethrel, a compound which readily releases ethylene, depressed VA mycorrhiza formation inMedicago sativa andTriticum vulgare when it was either applied to the rooting medium or sprayed to the foliage. The axenic germination ofGlomus mosseae spores was found to be sensitive to ethrel suggesting that at least part of the effect of ethrel on mycorrhization could come from its effect on fungal development. The possible ecological significance of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

Aim To test the abundant centre hypothesis by analysing the physical and climatic factors that influence body size variation in the European badger (Meles meles). Location Data were compiled from 35 locations across Europe. Methods We used body mass, body length and condylo‐basal length (CBL) as surrogates of size. We also compiled data on latitude, several climatic variables, habitat type and site position relative to the range edge. We collapsed all continuous climatic variables into independent vectors using principal components analysis (PCA), and used a general linear model to explain the morphometric variation in badger populations across the species’ range. Results Body mass and body length were nonlinearly and significantly related to latitude. In contrast, CBL was linearly related to latitude. Body mass changed nonlinearly along the temperature (PC1) gradient, with the highest values observed at mid‐range. Furthermore, body mass, body length and CBL differed significantly among habitats, with badgers showing larger size in temperate habitats and core areas relative to peripheral zones. Main conclusions Our analysis supports the nonlinear pattern predicted by the abundant centre hypothesis only for body mass and body length. These results imply that individuals are largest and heaviest at the centre of the climatic range of badger distribution. Variation of CBL with latitude follows a linear trend, consistent with Bergmann’s rule. Our results provide mixed support for the abundant centre hypothesis, and suggest food availability/quality to be the main mechanism underlying body size clines in this species.  相似文献

Disturbance of natural plant communities is the first visible indication of a desertification process, but damage to physical, chemical, and biological soil properties is known to occur simultaneously. Such soil degradation limits reestablishment of the natural plant cover. In particular, desertification causes disturbance of plant-microbe symbioses which are a critical ecological factor in helping further plant growth in degraded ecosystems. Here we demonstrate, in two long-term experiments in a desertified Mediterranean ecosystem, that inoculation with indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and with rhizobial nitrogen-fixing bacteria not only enhanced the establishment of key plant species but also increased soil fertility and quality. The dual symbiosis increased the soil nitrogen (N) content, organic matter, and hydrostable soil aggregates and enhanced N transfer from N-fixing to nonfixing species associated within the natural succession. We conclude that the introduction of target indigenous species of plants associated with a managed community of microbial symbionts is a successful biotechnological tool to aid the recovery of desertified ecosystems.  相似文献

The arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, a key component of agroecosystems, was assayed as a rhizosphere biosensor for evaluation of the impact of certain antifungal Pseudomonas inoculants used to control soil-borne plant pathogens. The following three Pseudomonas strains were tested: wild-type strain F113, which produces the antifungal compound 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG); strain F113G22, a DAPG-negative mutant of F113; and strain F113(pCU203), a DAPG overproducer. Wild-type strain F113 and mutant strain F113G22 stimulated both mycelial development from Glomus mosseae spores germinating in soil and tomato root colonization. Strain F113(pCU203) did not adversely affect G. mosseae performance. Mycelial development, but not spore germination, is sensitive to 10 μM DAPG, a concentration that might be present in the rhizosphere. The results of scanning electron and confocal microscopy demonstrated that strain F113 and its derivatives adhered to G. mosseae spores independent of the ability to produce DAPG.  相似文献
