The effect of temperature on unsaturated fatty acid synthesisin developing sunflower seed embryos (Helianthus annuus L.)has been studied using isolated seeds grown in culture. Variabilitybetween individual embryos in the response to temperature wasalso investigated. Oil and dry matter accumulation in cultured embryos were similarto those of embryos allowed to develop in intact plants, andthe effect of increasing temperature in lowering the amountof linoleic acid in seed oil was reproduced in cultured embryos. The isolated seed culture system, therefore, constitutes a suitablemodel system for studies of oil synthesis in developing sunflowerembryos. The decrease in linoleic acid synthesis in response to highertemperature was detectable after only 18 day-degrees incubation, and the incorporation of labelled substrates suggests that alterationsin the fatty acid composition of seed oil in response to temperatureare produced by an effect on the desaturation of newly synthesizedoleate rather than through turnover of existing lipid. Variation in fatty acid composition between individual embryosgrown at constant temperature was considerable. The detectionof embryos with high linoleic acid levels following growth athigh temperature indicates that potential may exist for theselection of cultivars for temperature-stable fatty acid compositionin sunflower oil. An anatomical investigation of the leaves and twigs of Pterostemonaceae (Engl.), a monogeneric family of two species, has been made. The following anatomical characters in the leaf are of particular interest: glandular hairs, hydathodes on the marginal dentations and secretory substances in the glands and palisade cells. Characters of interest in the twig xylem include: vessel lumina of very small tangential diameter and with simple perforation plates; fibriform vessels with scalariform plates having one to six bars and also plates with perforations in irregular patterns. 相似文献

Small diameter pyritized axes, commonly referred to as 'twigs', of fossil vitaceous and menispermaceous wood from the Lower Eocene, London Clay Formation of south-east England are described here for the first time. The vitaceous twigs, which represent the earliest known occurrence of fossil Vitaceae wood, are characterized by large diameter, solitary vessels, tall wide rays which dilate in the phloem region, scalariform intervessel pits and simple perforation plates. The wood anatomy supports a close relationship to the Vitaceae and in particular the genus Rhoicissus Planch. The menispermaceous twigs are characterized by medium to moderately large vessels, simple perforation plates, alternate intervascular pitting and very broad and high rays. The anatomical characters support a close relationship to the Menispermaceae and in particular the genera Tinomiscium Miers and Coscinium Colebr. However, as these fossil twigs are not exactly similar to any particular genus they have been placed in the organ genus, Vitacexoylon Wheeler and LaPasha and Menispermoxylon Vozenin-Serra, Privé-Gill & Ginsburg, with which, respectively, they have the greatest similarity. These specimens were studied using reflected light- and scanning electron microscopy. 相似文献

The effect of larval photoperiod on pupal colour and diapause in swallowtail butterflies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT.
- 1 There are significant differences in the effects of larval photo-period on diapause and pupal colour among the species Papilio polyxenes Fabr., P.troilus L., Battus philenor (L.) and Eurytides marcellus (Cramer).
- 2 Diapause and pupal colour in P.polyxenes and P.troilus are strongly influenced by larval photoperiod, short photophase eliciting brown diapausing pupae. Photoperiods of 15L:9D permit the expression of the green and brown pupal colour alternatives.
- 3 Pupal colour in B.philenor and E.marcellus is not affected by larval photoperiod, but short photophase induces diapause in these species.
- 4 All species except B.philenor show an association between brown pupal colour and diapause: Emarcellus when reared on long (midsummer) photophase, P.polyxenes and P.troilus when reared on short (autumnal) photophase.
- 5 In P.polyxenes, short photophase can affect pupal colour responses directly, whether the individual enters diapause or not.
- 6 Differences among the species are related to differences in the ecology of their natural pupation sites.
