The influence of low temperature on the operation of the xanthophyll cycle and energy dissipation activity, as ascertained through measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence, was examined in two broad-leaved evergreen species, Vinca minor L. and Euonymus kiautschovicus Loessner. In leaves examined under laboratory conditions, energy dissipation activity developed more slowly at lower leaf temperatures, but the final, steady-state level of such activity was greater at lower temperatures where the rate of energy utilization (through photosynthetic electron transport) was much lower. The rate at which energy dissipation activity increased was similar to that of the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin to antheraxanthin and zea-xanthin at different temperatures. However, leaves in the field examined prior to sunrise on mornings following cold days and nights exhibited a retention of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin that was associated with sustained decreases in photosystem II efficiency. We therefore suggest that this phenomenon of ‘photoinhibition’ in response to light and cold temperatures during the winter results from sustained photoprotective thermal energy dissipation associated with the xanthophyll cycle. Such retention of the de-epoxidized components of the xanthophyll cycle responded to day-to-day changes in temperature, being greatest on the coldest mornings (when photoprotective energy dissipation might be most required) and less on warmer mornings when photosynthesis could presumably proceed at higher rates. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Questions about how today's corals and coral reefswill fare in a future that holds not only increasing directanthropogenic impacts, but also global change, cannot be satisfactorilyanswered if we do not understand the relations of corals andreef systems to today's environmental conditions. This paperdiscusses four aspects of modern reef biology: coral reproduction,coral population biology, the coral-zooxanthella symbiosis,and reef community ecology. Conclusions of this survey of currentknowledge are that complexities of cnidarian reproductive biology,and our rudimentary knowledge of reproductive patterns in reefcnidarians, make forecasting based on current knowledge uncertainat best; new discoveries about the coral algal symbiotic systemsuggest a possible mode of adjustment to environmental changethat warrants a strong research effort; coral communities ofthe future may well be unlike what we are familiar with today;and these new assemblages will be shaped by the interactionof novel environmental conditions and the characteristics ofindividual reef species. 相似文献

Abstract. In previous studies, we found that a single neonatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) resulted in severe hyperplasia and a high incidence of endometrial adenocarcinoma in the uterus of adult hamsters. These observations prompted us to investigate the consequences of DES exposure on earlier stages of uterine morphogenesis. After neonates were treated within 6 h of birth (day 1) with 100 μg of DES or oil vehicle, uterine tissue morphometry plus cell labelling indices following in vivo pulse labeling with [3 H]thymidine were determined on days 3–21 of life. The sequential findings were: (1) a precocious (day 3) burst of cellular proliferation throughout the uterus, (2) an early period (days 3–9) of hypertrophy and increased cell density in the luminal epithelium, (3) an extreme acceleration of uterine growth resulting in a persistent increase in total uterine mass (threefold enhancement on days 5–21), (4) precocious development of endometrial glands (day 9) that were sites of intense but transient proliferative activity, (5) a middle period (days 9–15) when the percentage of stromal cells engaged in proliferative activity was reduced, (6) a second wave (days 15–21) of enhanced proliferative activity in the luminal epithelium, and (7) later development (day 21) of reduced cell density in the uterine stroma, apparently due to increased intercellular collagen accumulation. These results support our working hypothesis that the acute uterotropic response to neonatal DES treatment initiates a change in the developing hamster uterus, and later estrogenic stimulation promotes neoplastic progression in the DES-altered adult organ, perhaps due to disruption of stromal-epithelial interactions. 相似文献

Carex eleocharis leaves contain large intercellular cavities that traverse the length of the leaf above rows of stomata and are roughly constant in size throughout a leaf. Semithin sections (1–2 μm) demonstrate that the substomatal chambers are directly continuous with the intercellular cavities. Leaves of plants inhabiting moist swale regions of the shortgrass steppe, in northeastern Colorado, were found to have larger cavities as compared to leaves of plants inhabiting dry hilltops. Plants collected from a common hilltop site were grown in a controlled environment chamber, and, by manipulating the watering schedule, we obtained water potentials similar to those in the field. Leaves of “well-watered” plants were found to have larger intercellular cavities as compared to “water-stressed” plants. Leaf mesophyll cell sizes did not differ significantly between “well-watered” and “water-stressed” plants, suggesting that cavity size differences are not the result of developmental differences. Leaf cavities were shown to contain gases and to occur along the leaf length above rows of stomata. Additionally, the cavities in unstressed plants were continuous with substomal chambers. It is proposed that the reduction of cavity size is a mechanism to reduce water loss from the leaves during periods of plant water stress. 相似文献

The rat major histocompatibility complex class I antigens RT1.Au and RT1.Eu from the u haplotype and RT1.An from the n haplotype were labeled with 14C-asparagine or with 3H-fucose, mannose, galactose, and N-acetylglucosamine. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed complete removal of radioactivity from the sugar-labeled antigen heavy chains by digestion with glycopeptidase F, an enzyme that removes N-linked glycans completely. High performance liquid chromatography analysis of the tryptic digests of the mixed sugar-labeled and asparagine-labeled antigens demonstrated that all the sugar-labeled peptides were coincident with asparagine-labeled peptides. The An antigen showed three glycopeptides, each of which had different amounts of sugar radioactivity. The antigens Au and Eu showed two glycopeptides with different amounts of radioactivity but at identical positions in the two antigens. Antigen Eu had an additional glycopeptide with a lower amount of radioactivity. The positions of the glycopeptides from the Au and Eu antigens were different from those of the An antigen. The peptide profiles of the 14C-asparagine-labeled Au and Eu antigens demonstrated distinct differences between the molecules. The results of this study show that: (a) all the glycans on rat class I antigens are N-linked, as they are on H-2 and HLA class I antigens; (b) there are compositional differences among the glycans in each of the three antigens; (c) the glycosylation pattern of the rat class I antigens is similar to that of the mouse class I antigens, which contain two or three glycans, in contrast to that of the human class I antigens, which contain only one glycan; and (d) the antigens Au and Eu from the same haplotype are more closely related to each other than they are to the An antigen. 相似文献

Allelic variants of Ly-5 in inbred commensal and other natural populations of mice were analyzed by patterns of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) and Southern hybridization using an Ly-5 cDNA probe and by cell-surface staining with a panel of antibodies directed against polymorphic and nonpolymorphic Ly-5 determinants. New Ly-5 alleles were defined by RFLPs generated by both Eco RI and Bam HI restriction enzyme digests. The Mus musculus subspecies and other species within the genus Mus showed a strong correlation between allelic variants defined by restriction enzymes and serologic specificities. The data also suggest the conservation of the Ly-5 gene throughout the genus Mus. 相似文献
