The mesenchymal cells of the developing tooth differentiate into odontoblasts as a result of an epithelio-mesenchymal interaction. Odontoblast differentiation was studied in vitro by cultivating dental mesenchyme and epithelium with interposed filters. Separation of the two components by enzyme treatment resulted in removal of the basement membrane. When the epithelium was grown alone, or transfilter from killed lens capsule, the basement membrane was not restored. Transfilter cultivation with dental mesenchyme resulted in basement membrane formation, but only if the filter pores allowed penetration of cytoplasmic processes. Hence, a close association between the epithelial and the mesenchymal cells seems to be a prerequisite for the restoration of the basement membrane. Differentiation of odontoblasts took place only in explants in which a basement membrane was formed. Differentiation did not occur when contact of the mesenchymal cells with the basement membrane was prevented by small pore size filters. Further experiments demonstrating an intact basement membrane suggested that membrane contacts between the epithelial and the mesenchymal cells are not needed for odontoblast differentiation. Hence, we suggest that differentiation of odontoblasts is triggered via contact of the mesenchymal cells with the basement membrane.  相似文献

The classification and generic definition in the tropical–subtropical fern family Lindsaeaceae have been uncertain and have so far been based on morphological characters only. We have now studied the evolutionary history of the Lindsaeaceae by simultaneously optimizing 55 morphological characters, two plastid genes (rpoC1 and rps4) and three non‐coding plastid intergenic spacers (trnL‐F, rps4‐trnS and trnH‐psbA). Our data set included all genera associated with Lindsaeaceae, except Xyropteris, and c. 73% of the currently accepted species. The phylogenetic relationships of the lindsaeoid ferns with two enigmatic genera that have recently been included in the Lindsaeaceae, Cystodium and Lonchitis, remain ambiguous. Within the monophyletic lindsaeoids, we found six well‐supported and diagnostic clades that can be recognized as genera: Sphenomeris, Odontosoria, Osmolindsaea, Nesolindsaea, Tapeinidium and Lindsaea. Sphenomeris was shown to be monotypic; most taxa formerly placed in that genus belong to the Odontosoria clade. Ormoloma is embedded within Lindsaea and therefore does not merit recognition as a genus. Tapeinidium is sister to a clade with some species formerly placed in Lindsaea that are morphologically distinct from that genus and are transferred to Osmolindsaea and Nesolindsaea, proposed here as two new genera. We do not maintain the current subgeneric classification of Lindsaea itself, because neither of the two generally accepted subgenera (Lindsaea and Odontoloma) is monophyletic, and most of the sections also appear unnatural. Abstract. The division rate of Micrasterias torreyi cells grown under continuous illumination first accelerated but soon slowed down, and the cells lost their ability to divide after about 1 month. During the treatment the cells became pale green, the pyrenoids became fewer in number and defects appeared in the chloroplasts. After 1 month, the cells also soon died, even when subjected to intermittent illumination. The most striking structural alterations were found in the chloroplasts: the starch granules lost their typical structure, the lamellae were damaged and numerous electron dense precipitates appeared in the chloroplasts. The precipitates were similar to those formed in cells treated with supraoptimal external calcium concentrations and X-ray microanalysis showed that the precipitates were rich in calcium in both cases. The results suggest that light controls and activates the Ca2+ uptake in the plasma membrane as well as in the chloroplast envelope, that the large sized chloroplasts of Micrasterias are effective in regulation of cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration, and that the injuries caused by continuous illumination may be largely due to the accumulation of Ca2+ in the chloroplasts.  相似文献

Phylogenetics of Echinodorus (Alismataceae) based on morphological data   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Echinodorus (Alismataceae) is a genus of aquatic and semi-aquatic herbs naturally distributed from Argentina to the USA but commonly used as ornamentals in aquaria worldwide. The phylogeny of the genus was studied on the basis of 96 morphological characters. The analysis resulted in a single most-parsimonious tree supporting a polyphyletic origin of the genus. However, subgenus Echinodorus together with Echinodorus nymphaeifolius formed a clade. Two large clades can be recognized in Echinodorus s.s. , but previous subdivisions of the genus are not supported and some earlier proposed subspecific combinations were shown to be non-monophyletic. Addition of continuous characters coded as value ranges enhanced both the resolution and the support values of the tree. Embolisms decrease plant hydraulic conductance and therefore reduce the ability of the xylem to transport water to leaves provided that embolized conduits are not refilled. However, as a xylem conduit is filled with gas during cavitation, water is freed to the transpiration stream and this transiently increases xylem water potential. This capacitive effect of embolism formation on plant function has not been explicitly quantified in the past. A dynamic model is presented that models xylem water potential, xylem sap flow and cavitation, taking into account both the decreasing hydraulic conductance and the water release effect of xylem embolism. The significance of the capacitive effect increases in relation to the decreasing hydraulic conductance effect when transpiration rate is low in relation to the total amount of water in xylem conduits. This ratio is typically large in large trees and during drought.  相似文献

The timing of spring bud‐burst and leaf development in temperate, boreal and Arctic trees and shrubs fluctuates from year to year, depending on meteorological conditions. Over several generations, the sensitivity of bud‐burst to meteorological conditions is subject to selection pressure. The timing of spring bud‐burst is considered to be under opposing evolutionary pressures; earlier bud‐burst increases the available growing season (capacity adaptation) but later bud‐burst decreases the risk of frost damage to actively growing parts (survival adaptation). The optimum trade‐off between these two forms of adaptation may be considered an evolutionarily stable strategy that maximizes the long‐term ecological fitness of a phenotype under a given climate. Rapid changes in climate, as predicted for this century, are likely to exceed the rate at which trees and shrubs can adapt through evolution or migration. Therefore the response of spring phenology will depend not only on future climatic conditions but also on the limits imposed by adaptation to current and historical climate. Using a dataset of bud‐burst dates from twenty‐nine sites in Finland for downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.), we parameterize a simple thermal time bud‐burst model in which the critical temperature threshold for bud‐burst is a function of recent historical climatic conditions and reflects a trade‐off between capacity and survival adaptation. We validate this approach with independent data from eight independent sites outside Finland, and use the parameterized model to predict the response of bud‐burst to future climate scenarios in north‐west Europe. Current strategies for budburst are predicted to be suboptimal for future climates, with bud‐burst generally occurring earlier than the optimal strategy. Nevertheless, exposure to frost risk is predicted to decrease slightly and the growing season is predicted to increase considerably across most of the region. However, in high‐altitude maritime regions exposure to frost risk following bud‐burst is predicted to increase.  相似文献

The pied flycatcher is one of the most phenotypically variable bird species in Europe. The geographic variation in phenotypes has often been attributed to spatial variation in selection regimes that is associated with the presence or absence of the congeneric collared flycatcher. Spatial variation in phenotypes could however also be generated by spatially restricted gene flow and genetic drift. We examined the genetic population structure of pied flycatchers across the breeding range and applied the phenotypic Q ST ( P ST)– F ST approach to detect indirect signals of divergent selection on dorsal plumage colouration in pied flycatcher males. Allelic frequencies at neutral markers were found to significantly differ among populations breeding in central and southern Europe whereas northerly breeding pied flycatchers were found to be one apparently panmictic group of individuals. Pairwise differences between phenotypic ( P ST) and neutral genetic distances ( F ST) were positively correlated after removing the most differentiated Spanish and Swiss populations from the analysis, suggesting that genetic drift may have contributed to the observed phenotypic differentiation in some parts of the pied flycatcher breeding range. Differentiation in dorsal plumage colouration however greatly exceeded that observed at neutral genetic markers, which indicates that the observed pattern of phenotypic differentiation is unlikely to be solely maintained by restricted gene flow and genetic drift.  相似文献

This paper develops a statistical model for daily gross primary production (GPP) in boreal and temperate coniferous forests. The model applies the light use efficiency (LUE) approach, which estimates the conversion efficiency of daily absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) into daily GPP as a product of potential LUE and modifying factors. The latter were derived from daily total APAR and daily mean temperature, vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and soil water content (SWC). Modelling data came from five European eddy covariance measurement towers over 2–8 years. The model was tested against independent data from two AmeriFlux stations. The model with the APAR, temperature and VPD modifiers worked well in almost all the site–year combinations, but the SWC modifier only improved the fit in few cases. Geographical variation was found in the modifiers and potential LUE in site-specific models. When a model was fitted to pooled data, differences between sites could be explained by potential LUE, leaf area and environmental conditions. The test against the AmeriFlux data corroborated this finding. The potential LUE varied from 1.9 to 3.1 g C MJ−1, and a weak correlation was found between foliar nitrogen concentration and potential LUE. Some year-to-year variation remained which could be captured by neither the pooled nor the site-specific models.  相似文献

Adaptive phenotypic divergence of sympatric morphs in a single species may have significant evolutionary consequences. In the present study, phenotypic impacts of predator on zooplankton prey populations were compared in two northern Finnish lakes; one with an allopatric whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), population and the other with three sympatric whitefish populations. First, we examined whether there were phenotypic associations with specific niches in allopatric and sympatric whitefish. Second, trait utility (i.e. number of gillrakers) of allopatric and sympatric whitefish in utilizing a pelagic resource was explored by comparing predator avoidance of prey, prey size in environment, and prey size in predator diet. The allopatric living large sparsely rakered (LSR) whitefish morph, was a generalist using both pelagic and benthic niches. In contrast, sympatric living whitefish morphs were specialized: LSR whitefish was a littoral benthivore, small sparsely rakered whitefish was a profundal benthivore and densely rakered (DR) whitefish was a pelagic planktivore. In the lake with allopatric whitefish, zooplankton prey did not migrate vertically to avoid predation whereas, in the lake with sympatric whitefish, all important prey taxa migrated significantly. Carbon uptake and transpiration in plant leaves occurs through stomata that open and close. Stomatal action is usually considered a response to environmental driving factors. Here we show that leaf gas exchange is more strongly related to whole tree level transport of assimilates than previously thought, and that transport of assimilates is a restriction of stomatal opening comparable with hydraulic limitation. Assimilate transport in the phloem requires that osmotic pressure at phloem loading sites in leaves exceeds the drop in hydrostatic pressure that is due to transpiration. Assimilate transport thus competes with transpiration for water. Excess sugar loading, however, may block the assimilate transport because of viscosity build‐up in phloem sap. Therefore, for given conditions, there is a stomatal opening that maximizes phloem transport if we assume that sugar loading is proportional to photosynthetic rate. Here we show that such opening produces the observed behaviour of leaf gas exchange. Our approach connects stomatal regulation directly with sink activity, plant structure and soil water availability as they all influence assimilate transport. It produces similar behaviour as the optimal stomatal control approach, but does not require determination of marginal cost of water parameter.  相似文献
