Goldston syndrome: report of a case.

Cerebrohepatorenal malformation is a rare familial disorder characterized by typical renal lesions combined with Dandy-Walker malformation, and congenital hepatic fibrosis. In this case report, a male premie with the diagnosis of cerebrorenal syndrome or so called Goldston syndrome is presented. Besides the rarity of this syndrome, this case is the second reported patient diagnosed prenatally.     

An inverse problem in neural processing

Any neural network aimed at the coding sensory events must contain computational properties which generally allow the organism to reconstruct the input signals with some degree of accuracy-else the association between stimulus and response would, at best, be uncertain. In this paper we investigate the problem of reconstructing external input signals to neural networks when the activity profiles of only some of its member cells are known. The evolution and activities of such cells are defined by an earlier formulation of one of us (Ouztöreli 1979) and, here, we restrict our application to local curcuits within the vertebrate retina. Control mechanisms of a neural network

In this paper we consider some classical control theoretic properties of a nonlinear neural network proposed by Ouztöreli (1979) to represent the activities of constiuent neurones in terms of the input signals and coupling (associative) properties. In vitro effects of thyroxine on the mechanical properties of erythrocytes

In vitro effects of thyroxine on erythrocyte deformability and mechanical fragility were observed. Deformability of erythrocytes was improved in a dose dependent manner by thyroxine. Mechanical hemolysis was found to be lower if thyroxine was included in erythrocyte suspensions at concentrations close to the physiological levels (10(-9)M). These changes might be related to the alterations of intracellular calcium concentration, as in the erythrocyte suspensions containing 10(-9)M thyroxine, intracellular calcium concentration was found to be 30 times lower than the control suspensions which did not contain thyroxine. Thyroxine also reduced the mechanical hemolysis ratio in calcium loaded cells. These observations suggest that thyroxine might play some role in the regulation of the mechanical properties of erythrocytes which might be mediated via the effects on calcium metabolism.     

Biology and myriapod egg predation by the Neotropical myrmicine antStegomyrmex vizottoi (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Summary For the first time for a Neotropical ant and for Myrmicinae, the searching behavior and specialized predation of spirobolid millipede eggs byStegomyrmex vizottoi Diniz will be described. The relationship between morphology and habits is studied, as are nest architecture and distribution of the ant population in the nest chambers. We also report on some observations of behavior in the field and laboratory.We dedicate this paper to William L. Brown Junior, on the occasion of his 70^th birthday.
