The degree of serotiny (i.e. the proportion of follicles remaining closed in each year's crop of cones since the last fire) was measured in Bank-sia attenuata, B. menziesii and B. prionotes at five sites along a climatic gradient extending 500 km north of Perth, Western Australia. The decrease in annual rainfall and increase in average temperature along the gradient paralleled a decrease in plant height and an increase in the degree of serotiny of all species. Extreme serotiny was recorded in the scrub-heath at the xeric end of the gradient whereas two species were essentially non-serotinous in the low woodland at the most mesic site. It is concluded that degree of serotiny is related to the fire characteristics of the site which depend on plant height. In xeric scrub-heath, the entire canopies of the Banksia spp. are consumed by fire which promotes massive release of seed. This facilitates recruitment in an otherwise unpredictable and unreliable seedbed. In mesic woodland, where cones rarely come into contact With flames, seeds are released spontaneously and site conditions are more conducive to recruitment in the inter-fire period.  相似文献

Abstract Research in Mediterranean‐climate shrublands in both South Africa and Australia shows that recruitment of proteoid shrubs (non‐sprouting, serotinous Proteaceae) is best after warm‐season (summer and autumn) fires and worst after cool‐season (winter and spring) ones. This pattern has been attributed to post‐dispersal seed attrition as well as size of pre‐dispersal seed reserves. Here we investigate patterns of post‐fire recruitment for four proteoid species in the eastern part of South Africa's fynbos biome, which has a bimodal (spring and autumn) rainfall regime. Despite the lack of significant differences in recruitment between cool‐ and warm‐season burns, we find some evidence for favourable recruitment periods following fires in spring and autumn, immediately before, and coinciding with, the bimodal rainfall peaks. This suggests that enhanced recruitment is associated with conditions of high soil moisture immediately after the fire, and that rapid germination may minimize post‐dispersal seed attrition. In two of the species, we also find a shift from peak flowering in winter and spring in the Mediterranean‐climate part of the fynbos biome, to summer and autumn flowering in the eastern part. Because these two species are only weakly serotinous, warm‐season flowering would result in maximal seed banks in spring, which could explain the spring recruitment peak, but not the autumn one. We conclude that eastern recruitment patterns differ significantly from those observed in the western and central parts of the biome, and that fire management protocols for the east, which are currently based on data and experience from the winter‐rainfall fynbos biome, need to be adjusted accordingly. Fire managers in the eastern fynbos biome should be less constrained by requirements to burn within a narrow seasonal range, and should therefore be in a better position to apply the required management burns.  相似文献

Growth of Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) Exposed to Sulphur Dioxide   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of exposure to sulphur dioxide (0 or 96 µgm–3 SO2) on the growth and sulphur content of lucerne(Medicago sativa L.) was examined in a period of 135 d duringwhich the plants were harvested four times. The lucerne wasgrown in pots of soil with and without the addition of sulphateand of nitrate. Evidence of sulphur deficiency, including areduction in the weight, the number and the sulphur contentof shoots, was found in plants grown without added sulphate.Deficiency was alleviated through exposure of plants to SO2.Apart from reducing shoot weight at one harvest and generallyincreasimg the concentration of sulphur in the shoots, exposureto SO2 had no significant effect on plants grown with addedsulphate. The yield of shoots was greater, and was reduced toa lesser extent with sulphur deficiency, in plants grown withadded nitrate than in those dependent on rhizobia. Whilst thetranspiration coefficient increased greatly in sulphur-deficientplants, it was reduced where otherwise similarly treated plantswere exposed to SO2; this treatment did not alter the coefficientin plants with an adequate supply of sulphur from the soil.  相似文献

Seed release in two serotinous and two nonserotinous Banksia species from southwestern Australia increased many fold when burnt cones were subjected to wet-dry cycles compared with those remaining air-dry. The response was temperature-dependent, increasing markedly in treated cones of B. leptophylla as temperature was lowered from 30 to 15°C. This episodic wetting requirement at cool temperatures for prolific seed release implies that, following summer fruit opening, dispersal is delayed until the onset of late autumn/early winter rains when conditions are suitable for germination (optimum at ~15°C) and recruitment. Seed loss from post-dispersal predation and exposure to high summer soil temperatures also would be minimized.  相似文献

Taxonomic, edaphic and biological aspects of endemism were studied in a phanerogamous flora from the Agulhas Plain, a coastal lowland area of the Cape Floristic Region. Of the 1751 species in the flora, 23.6% were regional endemics and 5.7% were local endemics. Families which were over-represented in terms of endemics included the Ericaceae, Rutaceae, Proteaceae and Polygalaceae. Under-represented families included the Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Scrophulariaceae and Orchidaceae. Highest levels of local endemism were recorded on limestone and colluvial acid sand. Sixty-nine percent of regional endemics and 85% of local endemics were confined to a single substratum. An analysis of the frequency of biological traits associated with species with different categories of endemism enabled the establishment of a biological profile of a local endemic: a dwarf to low, non-sprouting shrub with soil stored seeds which are ant-dispersed and/or form a symbiotic relationship with microbes. It is argued that lineages with these characteristics are vulnerable to severe population reduction or even local extinction. An effect of this would be the promotion of rapid, edaphic speciation as a result of catastrophic selection. Thus, certain traits (e.g. non-sprouting) prevail or even predominate in the flora not because of any adaptive advantage but because high speciation rates of lineages which possess them, overwhelm low survival rates.  相似文献

The influence of a low concentration of SO2 on the growth andsulphur status of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cv.S23 was examined in a system of specially designed growth chambers. For plants grown without additions of sulphate to the soil, erposure to ifitered air containing 50 µg m–3 SO2alleviated sulphur deficiency that developed during a sequenceof successive harvests, and gave increased yield. The plantshad higher contents of organic and inorganic sulphur than thosegrown with neither sulphate nor SO2. Plants grown with addedsulphate showed no signs of sulphur deficiency and althoughexposure to SO2 increased their sulphur content it had no effecton yield. The coefficient of transpiration (g water transpiredg–1 dry wt. of shoots) was reduced when plants which otherwisehad an inadequate supply of sulphur were exposed to SO2; forplants with adequate supplies of sulphate, it was similar whetherthey were grown with or without the addition of SO2 to the air.The results are discussed in relation to other known reactionsof plants to SO2.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to SO2 (55 m–3) on the growthand sulphur nutrition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) cv. S23 were examined using a system of specially constructedgrowth chambers. The plants were grown in soil with two ratesof added nitrogen, either with or without added sulphate. Theywere harvested twice during the exposure period of 85 d. The high rate of added nitrogen gave a four-fold increase inthe yield of plants given added sulphate but resulted in sulphurdeficiency, with reduced yield and number of tillers, when nosulphate was given. Exposure to SO2 alleviated the effects ofdeficiency but was without effect on the yield of plants givensulphate. With the low rate of added nitrogen, the yield ofplants and the number of tillers were unaffected by the additionof sulphate to the soil or of SO2 to the air. The only indicationof possible injury through exposure of these plants to SO2 wasa small increase in the proportion of dead leaves at the secondharvest. Analysis of the leaves for total S and sulphate-S gave valuesconsistent with sulphur deficiency and its alleviation throughexposure to SO2; the contents of 0?045% S and 42 parts 10–6sulphate-S in deficient plants were raised to 0?102% and 153parts 10–6 respectively. The organic-S content of theleaves was always increased through exposure to SO2. There wasno evidence that exposure to SO2 increased the ‘transpirationcoefficient’ for plants having an adequate supply of sulphurfrom the soil.  相似文献

Abstract Succulent thicket in the Eastern Cape of South Africa is one of many rangeland ecosystems in the world that displays evidence of unsustainable grazing pressure. Widespread transformation of succulent thicket has resulted in the replacement of the typical two‐phase perennial vegetation patches with a structurally simple field layer of ephemeral and weakly perennial grasses and forbs. We hypothesized that (i) transformation of succulent thicket leads to a switch from a spatially heterogeneous landscape to a homogenous and relatively infertile state; and (ii) that this loss of fertility is associated with a breakdown in the processes that conserve resources and promote water use efficiency. We tested these hypotheses at five fenceline contrast sites in Sundays River Thicket, an arid form of succulent thicket. We compared soil fertility (organic carbon, available nitrogen and phosphorus), texture, matric potential, and surface microtopography in the two main microhabitats on either side of the fencelines using a nested anova. Our results show that intact Sundays River thicket has a distinct spatial pattern of soil fertility where nutrients and organic carbon are concentrated under the patches of perennial shrubs, compared with under canopy trees. Transformation results in a significant homogenization of this pattern and an overall reduction in the fertility of the landscape. The proportion of the landscape surface that promotes infiltration due to a distinct litter layer decreases from 60% to 0.6%. Soil moisture retention (matric potential) also decreases with transformation. We interpret these patterns within the framework of semi‐arid landscape functionality.  相似文献
