THE MANTLE AND SHELL OF SOLEMYA PARKINSONI (PROTOBRANCHIA: BIVALVIA)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The shell of Solemya exhibits considerable flexibility which is further enhanced by the marked extension of the periostracum beyond the calcareous portions of the valves. This fcature, more than any other, has made possible the habit, unique among bivalves, of burrowing deep within the substrate without direct contact with the water above. The inner calcareous layer of tho valves is restricted to a small area near the umbones while the outer calcareous layer is thin and contains a high proportion of organic material. The shell conchiolin consists mainly of protein, varying in composition, but much of it strengthcned by quinone-tanning, and in ccrtain regions probably by the presence of appreciable quantities of chitin. The ligament, although superficially resembling an amphidetic structure, is opisthodetic, the extcnsion anterior to the umbones consisting of anterior outer layer only.
The mantle is characterized by an extension of the outer fold of the mantle margin which has effected equally both the inner and outer surfaces of this fold. The secretory epithelium and the modified pallial musculature, contraction of which results in the intucking and plaiting of the periostracum, is dcscribed. Simple tubular oil glands open at the mantlo margin and are responsible for the water-repellent nature of the periostracum.
The form of the mantlelshell and that of the enclosed body are discussed and compared with those of other bivalves in which elongation of the mantle/shell is achieved in a different way. It is concluded that the mantlelshell of Solemya is of little value in determining its relationships, and that the greatly elongatod ligament, the edentulous hinge and the flexible shell are all adaptations to a specialized mode of life.  相似文献

Two cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Alexandria and Hanno) and three cultivars of winter wheat (cvs. Riband, Mercia and Haven) were grown at two concentrations of CO2 [ambient (355 pmol mol?1) and elevated (708 μmol mol?1)] under two O3 regimes [clean air (< 5 nmol mol?1 O3) and polluted air (15 nmol mol?1 O3 at night rising to a midday maximum of 75 nmol mol?1)] in a phytotron at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Between the two-leaf stage and anthesis, measurements of leaf gas-exchange, non-structural carbohydrate content, visible O3 damage, growth, dry matter partitioning, yield components and root development were made in order to examine responses to elevated CO2 and/or O3. Growth at elevated CO2 resulted in a sustained increase in the rate of CO2 assimilation, but after roughly 6 weeks' exposure there was evidence of a slight decline in the photosynthetic rate (c.-15%) measured under growth conditions which was most pronounced in the winter cultivars. Enhanced rates of CO2 assimilation were accompanied by a decrease in stomatal conductance which improved the instantaneous water use efficiency of individual leaves. CO2 enrichment stimulated shoot and root growth to an equivalent extent, and increased tillering and yield components, however, non-structural carbohydrates still accumulated in source leaves. In contrast, long-term exposure to O3 resulted in a decreased CO2 assimilation rate (c. -13%), partial stomatal closure, and the accumulation of fructan and starch in leaves in the light. These effects were manifested in decreased rates of shoot and root growth, with root growth more severely affected than shoot growth. In the combined treatment growth of O3-treated plants was enhanced by elevated CO2, but there was little evidence that CO2 enrichment afforded additional protection against O3 damage. The reduction in growth induced by O3 at elevated CO2 was similar to that induced by O3 at ambient CO2 despite additive effects of the individual gases on stomatal conductance that would be expected to reduce the O3 flux by 20%, and also CO2-induced increases in the provision of substrates for detoxification and repair processes. These observations suggest that CO2 enrichment may render plants more susceptible to O3 damage at the cellular level. Possible mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The production of high-frequency vocalizations duringsexual and agonistic interactions is widespread among rodents.The ubiquity of these signals suggests that they play importantroles as social communications in rodent reproduction and populationregulation. Furthermore, the consistent association of "ultrasound"production with hormone-dependent sexual andagonistic behaviorssuggests that hormones help to coordinate this form of communicationwith other behavioral and physiological preparations for reproduction.Experiments testing this hypothesis have shown clearly thatultrasound rates depend on gonadal hormones. In addition, theability of animals to elicit ultrasounds from conspecifics,and their inclination to respond to conspecific ultrasounds,both seem to depend on pituitary or gonadal hormones. The paper reports the occurrence of whitish 'leucistic' forms in populations of Barnacle Geese Branta leucopsis. A total of 15 (including 11 in the last 21 years) have been reported in the population breeding in Svalbard and wintering in the Solway Firth, northern Britain, whereas the two other populations, though much larger, have produced only one bird of the same type between them in the last 30 years. Leucism is controlled by a single, recessive allele.
The median lifespan of leucistic birds is 2–3 years, compared to 8–10 years for normal plumaged birds. This is because they are sought out by (illegal) hunters. There is no evidence that there is any difference in pairing or breeding performance between white and normal birds, though one male, which is still alive aged 18 years, has produced 13 young; this performance is matched fay less than 2% of normal geese.
It is suggested that the Svalbard population was established recently, from a few founders from the Siberian population; if one or two of these carried the allele controlling leucism, this would explain its much higher prevalence in this population than in the other discrete groups of Barnacle Geese.  相似文献
