Many desert playas are covered with water in the early spring. As theweather becomes warmer and drier, water evaporates, increasing saltcontent of the soil from 7,000 to almost 16,000 mmol NaCl Kg-1. Changes in respiratory metabolism during the growing season of fourhalophytes characteristic of cold desert playas was followed usingcalorimetry. In order of decreasing salt tolerance, the species examinedwere: the forbs Salicornia rubra, S. utahensis; the grass Distichlisspicata; and the shrub Allenrolfea occidentalis. Tissue collected in thefield from sites of low and high salinity in a single playa during May, June, and August of 1997 was put in isothermal calorimeters and the metabolicheat rate (q) and respiration rate (RCO2) measured. Efficiency ofsubstrate carbon conversion (q/RCO2) and predicted specific growthrate (HBRSG) were calculated. These species are allwell-adapted to the environment in which they are found. Highestmetabolism, respiration, efficiency and growth are found during May andJune and are lowest during the hot, dry month of August. Differencesbetween the species are also noted.  相似文献

Suaeda fruticosa Forssk is a leaf succulent obligate halophyte that produces numerous seeds under saline conditions. Seeds are a good source of high quality edible oil and leaves are capable of removing substantial amount of salt from the saline soil besides many other economic usages. Little is known about the biochemical basis of salt tolerance in this species. We studied some biochemical responses of S. fruticosa to different exogenous treatments under non-saline (0 mM), moderate (300 mM) or high (600 mM) NaCl levels. Eight-week-old seedlings were sprayed twice a week with distilled water, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 100 μM), glycine betaine (GB, 10 mM), or ascorbic acid (AsA, 20 mM) for 30 days. At moderate (300 mM) NaCl, leaf Na+, Ca2+ and osmolality increased, along with unchanged ROS and antioxidant enzyme activities, possibly causing a better plant growth. Plants grew slowly at 600 mM NaCl to avoid leaf Na+ buildup relative to those at 300 mM NaCl. Exogenous application of distilled water and H2O2 improved ROS scavenging mechanisms, although growth was unaffected. ASA and GB alleviated salt-induced growth inhibition at 600 mM NaCl through enhancing the antioxidant defense system and osmotic and ion homeostasis, respectively.  相似文献

Ethylene is invariably produced during seed germination but its role in regulating seed dormancy and germination is poorly understood. Seeds of 22 halophytic species having different life forms – salt secreting dicots, salt secreting monocots, stem succulents and leaf succulents were germinated in Petri dishes kept in a growth chamber set at 20/30 °C (night/day) temperature and a 12 hr light period. Sodium chloride and ethephon were added to the medium from the beginning of the experiment. Seed germination was recorded every other day for twenty days. Application of ethylene did not have any significant effect on releasing seeds from innate dormancy. However, it appeared to have a role in alleviation of salinity effects which varied from negative in certain species to almost complete alleviation of high salinity effects in others. Our data indicates that ethylene appears to have little role in breaking innate seed dormancy however, in most halophyte seeds studied, application of ethylene alleviate the salinity effect to various degrees. Halophyte seeds which could germinate under saline conditions approaching twice the salinity of seawater may offer clues to understand management of seed germination under highly saline conditions. Influence of salinity and temperature on the germination of Kochia scoparia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Kochia scoparia is one of the most common annual halophytes foundin the Great Basin. Seeds were collected from a population growing in asalt playa at Faust, Utah and were germinated at 5 temperature regimes(12 h night/12 h day, 5–15 °C, 10–20 °C, 15–25 °C,20–30 °C and 25–35 °C) and 6 salinities (0, 200, 400,600, 800 and 1000 mM NaCl) to determine optimal conditions forgermination and recovery of germination from saline conditions after beingtransferred to distilled water. Maximum germination occurred in distilledwater, and an increase in NaCl concentration progressively inhibited seedgermination. Few seeds germinated at 1000 mM NaCl. A temperatureregime of 25 °C night and 35 °C day yielded maximumgermination. Cooler temperature 5–15 °C significantly inhibited seedgermination. Rate of germination decreased with increase in salinity.Germination rate was highest at 25–35 °C and lowest at5–15 °C. Seeds were transferred from salt solutions to distilled waterafter 20 days and those from high salinities recovered quickly at warmertemperature regimes. Final recovery germination percentages in high salttreatments were high, indicating that exposure to high concentration ofNaCl did not inhibit germination permanently.  相似文献
