The length–weight relationships (LWR) were estimated for five selected demersal marine fishes from the relatively undisturbed shelves and slopes of the Cabo Verde Islands. Most of them were of ecological and/or commercial interest. Occasional sampling was carried out during different fisheries research projects. LWRs were taken for the following bycatch species for which no such estimates exists in the science literature: Myroconger compressus, Synaphobranchus affinis, Physiculus cyanostrophus, Physiculus caboverdensis and Canthidermis maculata. Total length and fork length (to the nearest 0.1 cm) and total weight (to the nearest 0.1 g) were determined. The resulting length–weight equations are characterized by a high accompanying coefficient of correlation. The present data help improving the knowledge base needed for further fish biology studies and fisheries management.  相似文献

In Central Amazon, Brazil, the tabanid Phorcotabanus cinereus (Wiedemann) was recorded attacking the native duck Cairina moschata (Linnaeus) (Anseriformes, Anatidae). The flight and behavior of the tabanid during the attacks and the host's defenses were videotaped and analyzed in slow motion. The tabanid was recorded flying rapidly around the heads of the ducks before landing. Landing always took place on the beak, and then the tabanid walked to the fleshy caruncle on the basal part of the beak to bite and feed. Firstly the duck defends itself through lateral harsh head movements, and then, when it is being bitten, it defends itself by rubbing its head on the body, or dipping the head into water, when swimming. If disturbed, the fly resumed the same pattern of flight as before and would generally try to land again on the same host and bite in the same place. This feeding activity was observed predominantly between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm and always in open areas, near aquatic environments, from June 1996 to January 1997, the dry season in Central Amazon. To test the attractiveness of other animals to P. cinereus, mammals, caimans and domestic and wild birds were placed in suitable habitat and the response of P. cinereus observed. P. cinereus did not attack these animals, suggesting that this species has a preference for ducks, which are plentiful in the region.  相似文献

New chiral salen ligands were prepared by the ultrasound‐irradiated condensation of optically active (1R, 3S)‐1,2,2‐trimethyl‐1,3‐diaminocyclopentane with aromatic 1‐hydroxyaldehydes. The ultrasound‐mediated process is more convenient due to shorter reaction times, energy economy, and easier isolation of the products. The in situ formed Ti(IV)(salen) complexes, evaluated as catalysts in the enantioselective trimethylsilylcyanation of benzaldehyde, were found to be efficient for this process, originating the corresponding product in high yields (72–99%) and selectivities of up to 79%. The lowest energy transition states were determined by computational studies. These results were in qualitative agreement with the experimentally observed ones. Although general anesthetics are thought to modify critical neuronal functions, their impact on neuronal communication has been poorly examined. We have investigated the effect induced by desflurane, a clinically used general anesthetic, on information transfer at the synapse between mossy fibers and granule cells of cerebellum, where this analysis can be carried out extensively. Mutual information values were assessed by measuring the variability of postsynaptic output in relationship to the variability of a given set of presynaptic inputs. Desflurane synchronized granule cell firing and reduced mutual information in response to physiologically relevant mossy fibers patterns. The decrease in spike variability was due to an increased postsynaptic membrane excitability, which made granule cells more prone to elicit action potentials, and to a strengthened synaptic inhibition, which markedly hampered membrane depolarization. These concomitant actions on granule cells firing indicate that desflurane re-shapes the transfer of information between neurons by providing a less informative neurotransmission rather than completely silencing neuronal activity.  相似文献

The large scale spread of Bantu-speaking populations remains one of the most debated questions in African population history. In this work we studied the genetic structure of 19 Bantu-speaking groups from Mozambique and Angola using a multilocus approach based on 14 newly developed compound haplotype systems (UEPSTRs), each consisting of a rapidly evolving short tandem repeat (STR) closely linked to a unique event polymorphism (UEP). We compared the ability of UEPs, STRs and UEPSTRs to document genetic variation at the intercontinental level and among the African Bantu populations, and found that UEPSTR systems clearly provided more resolution than UEPs or STRs alone. The observed patterns of genetic variation revealed high levels of genetic homogeneity between major populations from Angola and Mozambique, with two main outliers: the Kuvale from Angola and the Chopi from Mozambique. Within Mozambique, two Kaskazi-speaking populations from the far north (Yao and Mwani) and two Nyasa-speaking groups from the Zambezi River basin (Nyungwe and Sena) could be differentiated from the remaining groups, but no further population structure was observed across the country. The close genetic relationship between most sampled Bantu populations is consistent with high degrees of interaction between peoples living in savanna areas located to the south of the rainforest. Our results highlight the role of gene flow during the Bantu expansions and show that the genetic evidence accumulated so far is becoming increasingly difficult to reconcile with widely accepted models postulating an early split between eastern and western Bantu populations.  相似文献

Taste receptor cells (TRCs) represent an unique opportunity to study a dynamic population of excitable cells that undergoes two basic neurobiological processes: postnatal development and cell turnover. We have begun to investigate the functional properties of TRCs and how they mature over time by applying the patch-clamp technique to single cell in taste buds isolated from mouse vallate papilla during postnatal development. We have focussed our attention on a well-defined functional group of taste cells, called Na/OUT cells, and on their voltage-gated K+, and Cl- currents (I(K) and I(Cl), respectively). As in neurons, I(K) and I(Cl) underlie action potential waveform and firing properties in these cells. By analyzing the relative occurrence of I(K) and I(Cl) among cells, we found that in adult mice three different electrophysiological phenotypes of Na/OUT cells could be detected: cells with only I(K) (K cells); cells with both I(K) and I(Cl) (K + Cl cells); and cells with I(Cl) (Cl cells). On the contrary, at early developmental stages (2-4 postnatal day, PD) there were no Cl cells, which appeared at PD 8. The analysis of the changes in current amplitude (which continuously increased in developing cells) during postnatal development suggested that Cl cells and K + Cl cells likely represented a single functional line different from K cells. In addition, electrophysiological data were consistent with the interpretation that Cl cells derived from some K + Cl cells by suppression of I(K). The dynamics of the expression of I(K) and I(Cl) during postnatal development likely reflects a mechanism that could also operate during turnover.  相似文献

The irradiation of deaerated solutions of horse heart cytochrome c causes the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). The dependence of the photoreaction quantum yield on pH shows that the photoreactive species is a form of cytochrome c which contains methionine-80 and histidine-18 as heme ligands. The primary photochemical event consists of an electron transfer from the sulphur of methionine- 80 to iron. The re-oxidation of the photochemically obtained Fe(II) protein gives a Fe(III) cytochrome which exhibits a typical low-spin absorption spectrum, lacking the 695-nm band and indicating that a strong field ligand, other than methionine-80, coordinates to the sixth binding site of the heme iron. Spectrophotometric titration of the photochemically modified Fe(III) cytochrome shows that histidine- 18 remains bound in the fifth position. The substitution of methionine-80 with the more oxidizable azide ligand increases the efficiency of the intramolecular electron transfer. Azide radicals, detected by spin-trapping ESR technique, are formed in the primary act. Visible-UV spectral data indicate that histidine-18 and methionine-80 occupy the fifth and sixth position, respectively, in the photoreaction product. All the results obtained correlate well with those previously obtained in investigations concerning the photoredox behavior of iron porphyrin complexes.  相似文献
