One of the key predictions of general life-history theory is that reproduction incurs a survival cost. Although there is a convincing body of evidence to support this prediction at the intraspecific level in insects, evidence at the interspecific level is relatively scarce, as is the case for other animals. By employing two methods of phylogenetically controlled analysis, we demonstrate the existence of a negative correlation between life-span and early life investment in reproduction, across a wide diversity of Lepidoptera. The measure of initial reproductive effort used was the 'ovigeny index', defined as the proportion of the lifetime potential egg complement that is mature (ready to lay) upon female emergence. We present a graphical model for holometabolous insects, illustrating the trade-offs that are hypothesized to occur among capital resources (soma vs non-soma and initial eggs vs storage) in relation to variation in ovigeny index. These trade-offs, for which there is some empirical support, are postulated to underlie the life-span/ovigeny index relationship observed in the Lepidoptera and also in other insect orders.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 293–302.  相似文献

Variation in the degree of insect wing melanin affects thermoregulation, and is expected to be adapted to local environmental conditions, for example over an elevational gradient. The effects of melanization on flight activity and egg maturation rate were assessed in the closely related butterflies Colias philodice eriphyle and C. eurytheme using experimental manipulation of wing darkness and transplant experiments between high and low elevation sites. Experimental manipulation of wing darkness in C. p. eriphyle demonstrated that light males had reduced flight activity at high elevations, and darkened males had reduced flight activity at low elevations. In contrast, the transplant experiments revealed asymmetrical adaptation for male C. p. eriphyle . At high elevations darker, high-elevation males had higher flight activity than lighter, low-elevation males, but there was no difference between the two groups at low elevation. For females, melanization had no effect on flight activity. However, an increase in female C. eurytheme wing darkness led to a significantly higher egg maturation rate at cold ambient temperatures, which may increase female reproductive output under natural conditions. The study examined the relationships between whole tree hydraulic conductance ( K tree) and the conductance in roots ( K root) and leaves ( K leaf) in loblolly pine trees. In addition, the role of seasonal variations in K root and K leaf in mediating stomatal control of transpiration and its response to vapour pressure deficit ( D ) as soil-dried was studied. Compared to trunk and branches, roots and leaves had the highest loss of conductivity and contributed to more than 75% of the total tree hydraulic resistance. Drought altered the partitioning of the resistance between roots and leaves. As soil moisture dropped below 50%, relative extractable water (REW), K root declined faster than K leaf. Although K tree depended on soil moisture, its dynamics was tempered by the elongation of current-year needles that significantly increased K leaf when REW was below 50%. After accounting for the effect of D on g s, the seasonal decline in K tree caused a 35% decrease in g s and in its sensitivity to D , responses that were mainly driven by K leaf under high REW and by K root under low REW. We conclude that not only water stress but also leaf phenology affects the coordination between K tree and g s and the acclimation of trees to changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Coordinated Control of Respiratory Pattern During Locomotion in Birds   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
SYNOPSIS. Cineradiographic studies of magpies and pigeons inflight, coupled with measurements of air sac pressures and tracnealairflows, indicate a significant compressive effect of downstrokeand expansive effect of upstroke. These mechanical impacts ofthe wingbeat cycle upon the respiratory system likely contributeto a phasic coordination of the two cycles that, in these species,ensures that upstroke corresponds to the transition into inspirationand downstroke corresponds to the transition into expiration,regardless of the ratio of wingbeats to breaths. Similar phasicpatterns have been reported for other birds. Respiratory muscleactivity patterns indicate that the upstroke may indeed assistinspiratory airflow and that the downstroke may assist expiratoryairflow. Stimulation of ventilation with 5% CO2 during flightdid not alter the phasic coordination patterns between respiratoryand wingbeat cycles in either pigeons or magpies. These data support the concepts that 1) interactions of locomotorand respiratory central controllers likely play an importantrole in regulating respiratory pattern during locomotion inbirds and 2) peripheral neural feedback of information aboutthe mechanical impact of the wingbeat cycle upon the functioningof the respiratory pump is likely to make a strong contributionto a respiratory pattern that is coordinated with the locomotorpattern in an energetically appropriate phasic relationship.The failure to alter that pattern with chemical stimulationof breathing suggests that the neural interaction between locomotorand respiratory networks is quite robust  相似文献

  • 1 This study first examines the reproductive strategy of female Speyeria mormonia Edwards (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae):
  • 2 Egg weight and number laid per day decrease with age.
  • 3 Survival and daily egg number may be affected by temperature; mean daily egg weight is not affected by temperature.
  • 4 Daily egg number is not correlated with body size. In the central range of body size, egg weight is also not correlated with body size. However, exceptionally large or small females lay respectively heavier or lighter eggs than average.
  • 5 A simple trade-off between offspring size and number does not occur within females on a daily basis, or among females averaged over their lifespans.
  • 6 Fat body resources are depleted at a rate independent of body size.
  • 7 Females are essentially monogamous.
  • 8 Age-specific fecundity data reported here for S.mormonia are next compared with data for other Lepidoptera with different adult feeding habits and egg maturation patterns, and hence different possibilities for adult feeding to play a role in egg production. Based on these comparisons, I propose that the shape of the age-specific fecundity curve for each species under optimal conditions is constrained by the potential importance of adult nutrients in egg production.

Abstract. 1. Foraging effort can vary among age classes and between the sexes. In many Lepidoptera, young males feed from mud, dung or carrion in a behaviour known as 'puddling', whereas females rarely puddle. In at least one species, males transfer sodium gained from puddling to females at mating for use in egg production.
2. Here we examine sex- and age-specific puddling patterns in seven montane butterfly species. We also test the hypothesis that among species in which young males predominate at puddles, differences in age- and sex-specific puddling patterns for a given species are related to mean female lifetime mating numbers.
3. For five species, young males fed proportionately more at puddles than other sex and age classes. Two species showed anomalous feeding patterns. In one, young females predominated at puddles; in the other, butterflies were rarely found at flowers.
4. As predicted, among the five species in which young males feed proportionately more at puddles, mean number of lifetime matings by females was negatively correlated with frequency of mud puddling by older females. A second prediction that mean number of lifetime matings by females is positively correlated with frequency of mud puddling by older males was not supported.
5. The results provide support for interspecific variation in division of responsibility between the sexes for resource acquisition for female reproduction, indicating close coordination between the sexes of foraging and life-history tactics.  相似文献

In nectar-feeding butterflies, reproductive potential is usually thought to depend on the size of the reproductive reserves in the abdomen, the adult food quality and, for females, the amount of resources received in the spermatophores at mating. Recent findings show that thorax mass and nitrogen content decrease with age in some butterfly species, and that thorax resources may be used for reproduction in the butterfly Pieris napi , just as in some other insects. In order to determine whether this is a general pattern and ascertain how it relates to the investment of resources in reproduction we studied the dynamics of thorax and abdomen mass changes in 11 Swedish butterfly species. By regressing thorax and abdomen mass on age of field-collected specimens, we show that loss of mass from both the thorax and the abdomen is a common phenomenon among nectar-feeding temperate zone butterflies under natural conditions. We argue that our results indicate that resources from flight muscles can be reallocated to reproduction by these butterflies, thus increasing their reproductive potential. Within species, females use proportionately more resources from the thorax than do males, as expected from the difference in investment of resources in reproduction. Among males we expect species with a higher reproductive investment to have a larger decrease in thorax and abdomen mass, and our data indicate that this is the case. Looking at the change in relative thorax mass, our results suggest that the use of resources from the thorax does not affect flight performance negatively, something that could constrain the use of muscle resources.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 86 , 363–380.  相似文献
