Structure of vegetation of steppe hills in the Altai piedmont

The phytocenotic diversity of the Altai steppe piedmont is described. Plant communities were ordinated along the moisture gradient. The results were used to analyze the structure of vegetation of steppe hill massifs. Distribution of steppe vegetation over an ideal hill was simulated, and the main patterns of distribution were typified.     

Cytogenetic effects of cyclophosphamide on human lymphocytes in vivo and in vitro

A comparative study of cytogenetic effects in human lymphocytes caused in vivo by cyclophosphamide (CP) after intravenous injection and in vitro by exposure of plasma of the same patients was carried out. It was found that the frequency of induced chromosome aberrations (CA) and sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE) increased linearly for SCE and exponentially for CA within the 'dose' of alkylating activity of CP metabolites. Parameters of 'cytogenetic effect-dose' in vivo and in vitro coincided. The intensity of cytogenetic effects varied between individuals.     

Effect of heparin on the antiradiation activity of cystamine, decreasing with a reduction in radiation intensity

It was shown that a single injection of heparin (250 units/kg) 15 min and 24 h before irradiation potentiated a slight radioprotective effect of cystamine (dichlorohydrate, 170 mg/kg) which was registered after the administration thereof to mice 30 min before irradiation with an absolutely lethal dose at a dose rate of 0.0025 Gy/c.     

Effect of polymyxins on Bacillus polymyxa sporogenesis

Bacillus polymyxa var. Ross. producing polymyxin M and Bacillus polymyxa 153 producing polymyxin B form spores during submerged cultivation when the rate of biosynthesis of antibiotic peptides is low and when the production of antibiotics is over. However, sporogenesis is stimulated if polymyxins are added at the early stage of cultural growth. Inhibition of the synthesis of antibiotics suppresses the formation of spores. Substances other than polymyxins do not exhibit such a specific effect on sporogenesis. The fact that the culture requires endogenous polymyxins which are most effective in the period prior to the appearance of spores in the culture suggests the regulatory action of these peptides at the stage between vegetative growth and spore formation in Bacillus polymyxa.     

Hydrolysis of nucleoside triphosphate in plasma membranes of the hepatocytes of normal, regenerating and foetal livers and in cancer cells of hepatomas.

Electron histochemical studies show that changes in the nucleoside triphosphatase activity in plasma membranes of cancer cells can proceed in different directions. Some cells show a high activity of magnesium-dependent NTPase over the whole membrane surface (perimeter), while others have a low enzymic activity which is present only in certain regions of the membranes, the remaining cells possessing no enzyme activity at all. These changes are not strictly characteristic of cancer cells alone.
