Summary

The process of spermiogenesis and the ultrastructure of the spermatozoa in the peanut worm, Themiste pyroides, from the Sea of Japan were observed with electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). The testes are composed of groups of spermatogonia and are covered by peritoneal cells. Clusters of spermatocytes are released from the testes into the coelomic fluid. Connected by intercellular bridges, the spermatocytes within a given cluster develop asynchronously. Proacrosomal vesicles and a flagellum appear in spermatocytes. Spermatids in the clusters retain the intercellular connections. During spermiogenesis, the acrosomal vesicle, formed by coalescence of small proacrosomal vesicles in the basal part of the spermatid, migrates to the apical part of the cell to form a conical-shaped acrosome. The basal concavity lying above the nucleus is filled with subacrosomal substance. The midpiece contains four mitochondria, two centrioles, and some residual cytoplasm with dark glycogen-like granules. A peculiar annulus structure develops around the base of the flagellum. The distal centriole has a pericentriolar complex consisting of radially oriented elements. Before the spawning process, the spermatozoa are filtered throughout the ciliary nephrostomal funnel into the excretory sac of paired nephridia where they are stored for a short time. The sperm are released into the sea water via nephridiopores. Spermatozoa remaining in the coelomic fluid after spawning are resorbed by amoebocytes. This species from Vostok Bay is characterized by a prolonged spawning period from June to early October. The reproductive strategy of T. pyroides is discussed in comparison with that of Thysanocardia nigra, the latter having a unique pattern of packaging of the spermatozoa, resulting in the formation of spermatozeugmata, as a reproductive adaptation to the very short spawning period.  相似文献

Axial and radial transport and the accumulation of photoassimilates in carrot taproot were studied using 14C labelling and autoradiography. Axial transport of the 14C labelled assimilates inside the taproot was rapid and occurred mainly in the young phloem found in rows radiating from the cambium. The radial transport of the assimilate inward (to cambium, xylem zone and pith) and outward (to phloem zone and periderm) from the conducting phloem was an order of magnitude slower than the longitudinal transport and was probably mainly diffusive. The cambial zone of the taproot presented a partial barrier in the inward path of the assimilate to the xylem zone. We suggest that this is due to the cambium comprising a strong sink for the assimilate on the basis that our previous work has shown that it contains very low concentrations of free sucrose. By contrast, a high accumulation of nonsoluble 14C was found in the cambium region in good agreement with the active growth of this zone. Autoradiography following the feeding of 14C labelled sugars to excised sections of taproot indicated that only a ring of cells at and/or just within the cambium take up sugars from the apoplast. This indicates that radial movement in the phloem and pith must be symplastic. An apoplastic step between phloem and xylem is possible. The rapid uptake of sugars from the apoplast at this point might represent a mechanism for keeping photoassimilates away from the transpiration stream and re-location back to the leaves.  相似文献

The marine snail Littorina mariae Sacchi & Rastelli occurs in high numbers in the littoral zone on fucoid macro-algae. The eggs are laid on the seaweed and d e velopment to miniature snails takes place without any pelagic larval stage. We have mapped the genetic variation of 30 enzyme loci in populations from eight small islands within 15 km of each other on th swedish west coast. The original intention was to investigate the magnitude of gene flow within and between islands. However, we soon realized that our basic assumption of neutral genetic variation was forcefully violated in at least one locus, arginine kinase ( Ask ). Allele frequencies of Ark were strongly associated with type of habitat. Therefore the main part of this study focused on allele frequency distribution in different habitats. Eight of the 30 loci screened were polymmorphic but we mainly considered the four most polymorphic ones (total heterozygosity between 0.32 and 0.57). All four showed significant heterogeneity between subpopulations, Ask especially so; 42% of the total variation of Ark was explained by differentiation between samples, and 90% of this variation was attributed to differences between different types of habitats (more or less exposed to wave action). In contrast, peptidase ( Pep-1 ) and phosphoglucomutase ( Pgm-2 ) varied in a way predicted by neutral theory; between sample variation being mainly attributed to differentiation bvetween islands. The variation in phosphoglucose isomerase ( Pgi ) was less consistent. In some islands there w as an obvious difference between different habitats, but on other islands we found no significant difference. Not taking into account the extreme, presumably sclected, variation in Ark , we concluded that the metapopulation of Littoriana mariae that we studied was divided into semi-isolated populations, between which the average rate of migration was in the range of a fe w individuals per generation.  相似文献

Lin, J.‐P., Ivantsov, A.Y. & Briggs, D.E.G. 2011: The cuticle of the enigmatic arthropod Phytophilaspis and biomineralization in Cambrian arthropods. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 344–349. Many non‐trilobite arthropods occur in Cambrian Burgess Shale‐type (BST) biotas, but most of these are preserved in fine‐grained siliciclastics. Only one important occurrence of Cambrian non‐trilobite arthropods, the Sinsk biota (lower Sinsk Formation, Botomian) from the Siberian Platform, has been discovered in carbonates. The chemical compositions of samples of the enigmatic arthropod Phytophilaspis pergamena Ivantsov, 1999 and the co‐occurring trilobite Jakutus primigenius Ivantsov in Ponomarenko, 2005 from this deposit were analysed. The cuticle of P. pergamena is composed of mainly calcium phosphate and differs from the cuticle of J. primigenius, which contains only calcium carbonate. Phosphatized cuticles are rare among large Cambrian arthropods, except for aglaspidids and a few trilobites. Based on recent phylogenetic studies, phosphatization of arthropod cuticle is likely to have evolved several times. □arthropod cuticle, Burgess Shale‐type preservation, fossil‐diagenesis, phosphatization.  相似文献

Dicynodont therapsids have been known from the Upper Permian of Eastern Europe since the beginning of the twentieth century, but the phylogenetic relationships of these taxa have not been examined cladistically. Here we present the results of a phylogenetic analysis that includes eight Permian dicynodonts from Russia as well as 18 taxa best known from southern Africa. Our results do not conflict with much of the established picture of Permian dicynodont phylogeny, but are consistent with several novel hypotheses. Most importantly, our analysis suggests that the genus Dicynodon is paraphyletic, and we question its use in correlating widely separated basins. However, we cannot strongly reject a monophyletic Dicynodon . Our results also indicate that the closest Permian relatives of Kannemeyeria lived in Russia, suggesting a Laurasian origin for the lineage that includes this important Triassic taxon. The phylogeny presented here also suggests a Laurasian origin for several other dicynodont clades, but a Gondwanan origin is equally likely given the data at hand. Regardless of where these groups originated, there appears to be some endemism among Late Permian dicynodont faunas. Although our understanding of dicynodont phylogeny is improving, this study emphasizes the disparity in sampling of the dicynodont record between Gondwana and Laurasia and the need for a large scale phylogenetic analysis of Permian and Triassic dicynodonts.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 139 , 157−212.  相似文献

Morphometric variation in 30 craniometric characters of 465 skulls of the European badgers (Meles meles) from across Europe was analysed. Multivariate analyses revealed that the populations from Norway, Sweden, and Finland differ from other European populations in having smaller skulls. The analyses also revealed significant differences between the ‘south‐western Norwegian’ and ‘main Fennoscandian’ forms. On average, badgers from south‐west Norway were smaller than those of the remaining Fennoscandia. Morphological differences between the ‘south‐western Norwegian’ and ‘main Fennoscandian’ populations of M. meles suggest a possible in situ semisympatric divergence since the beginning of the Holocene warming, or a complex history of two groups involving at least two colonization routes. The small‐sized Scandinavian badgers may be close to the ancestral form that used to be widespread in Denmark and throughout Europe. The animals from south‐west Norway may instead be descendants of ancestors that were the first to penetrate the southern parts of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The ‘main Fennoscandian’ badgers are likely to have been the descendants of the second wave of recolonization of Scandinavia. Specifically, they might have colonized the Scandinavian Peninsula from the east after the last glaciation.  相似文献

A population of Stratiomys japonica, a species belonging to the family Stratiomyidae (Diptera), common name ‘soldier flies’, occurs in a hot volcanic spring, which is apparently among the most inhospitable environments for animals because of chemical and thermal conditions. Larvae of this species, which naturally often experience temperatures more than 40 °C, have constitutively high concentrations of the normally inducible heat-shock protein Hsp70, but very low level of corresponding mRNA. Larvae of three other species of the same family, Stratiomys singularior, Nemotelus bipunctatus and Oxycera pardalina, are confined to different type semi-aquatic habitats with contrasting thermal regime. However, all of them shared the same pattern of Hsp70 expression. Interestingly, heat-shock treatment of S. japonica larvae activates heat-shock factor and significantly induces Hsp70 synthesis, whereas larvae of O. pardalina, a species from constant cold environment, produce significantly less Hsp70 in response to heat shock. Adults of the four species also exhibit lower, but detectable levels of Hsp70 without heat shock. Larvae of all species studied have very high tolerance to temperature stress in comparison with other Diptera species investigated, probably representing an inherent adaptive feature of all Stratiomyidae enabling successful colonization of highly variable and extreme habitats.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of salt glands in developing leaves of Limoniumplatyphyllum is described prior to exposure to 3% NaCl solution(with non-secreting glands) and after 4.5 and 18 h exposureto the salt solution. It is shown that in most glands, the transitionto active chloride transport was accompanied by the displacementof vacuoles toward the cell periphery and by the establishmentof plasmalemma contact sites with the tonoplast which appearedsimilar to gap junctions in animal epithelial cells. No evidencefor the exocytosis of vacuoles was found. It is suggested thatgland vacuoles may have a primary role in chloride secretionand that the tonoplast may be functionally asymmetrical, sothat the free part facing the hyaloplasm bears ion pumps, whereashighly permeable ion channels are active along the zone of contactwith the plasmalemma. It follows that the active step in chloridetransport in Limonium glands is the influx of ions into thevacuoles. Within the inner cup cells of the gland, vacuolescome into contact with the plasmalemma only at sites where thecell wall is adjacent to secretory and accessory cells. Suchan asymmetry appears to ensure the directed flux of ions intothis cell wall. Wall protuberances in the gland cells are rudimentaryand presumably not involved directly in NaCl secretion. Thenucleolus is activated during secretion and the frequency offree ribosomes is significantly increased, which is suggestiveof their involvement in the synthesis of membrane transportproteins. The ultrastructure of about one-third of the glandsremained unchanged in salt-treated leaves. Key words: Salt glands, ultrastructure, ion fluxes  相似文献

Earlier studies of Swedish populations of the marine snail Littorina fabalis show that snails from different microhabitats (with a greater and lesser exposure to wave action) have almost diagnostic differences in one allozyme locus (arginine kinase, Ark ), and differ in adult size. Snails with 'sheltered' and 'exposed' Ark genotypes occur in sympatry in intermediary exposed sites and here adult sizes remain distinct. Approaching the microgeographic differentiation we studied the parts of two populations where the frequency of Ark changes dramatically over zones 50–120 m wide. The aim was to test if the transitional zones are best described as areas of mixing of two genetically separate populations, or if hybridization between the exposed and sheltered groups occurs. Heterozygotes were in deficiency along both clines but were still roughly twice as common as expected from a pure mixing of 'sheltered' and 'exposed' groups suggesting hybridization. Hybridization was also supported by the observation that snails homozygous for sheltered and exposed alleles mated at random with each other in both populations. On the macrogeographic scale, we found populations from exposed and sheltered sites in France and Wales being fixed for the same exposed and sheltered Ark alleles as found in Sweden. However, variation in three other highly polymorphic loci indicated geographic affinity rather than habitat similarity being the main factor of genetic coherence. These observations support a hypothesis of gene flow between exposed and sheltered populations of L. fabalis . Two Spanish populations were remarkably different with unique alleles at high frequencies in three of four strongly polymorphic loci.  相似文献
