Effect of dilution rate on eicosapentaenoic acid productivity ofPhaeodactylum tricornutum utex 640 in outdoor chemostat culture

Summary Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) volumetric productivity from an outdoor chemostat culture ofPhaeodactylum tricornutum UTEX 640 in a 50-l tubular photobioreactor varies with dilution rate, reaching a maximum of 47.8 mg l^–1 d^–1 at D=0.36 d^–1. Continuous culture at high dilution rates' is proposed as the most adequate operating mode to maximize polyunsaturated fatty acid production.

FTA® cards were used for long‐term storage of avian blood samples. Blood DNA was extracted by a simple method and used in PCR for sex identification of adult and nestling Great Grey Shrikes Lanius excubitor.     

Midsummer heat wave effects on lacustrine plankton: Variation of assemblage structure and fatty acid composition

The effects of the 2003 European heat wave on a freshwater plankton assemblage and its fatty acid (FA) composition were investigated. Composition and FA profiles of four size categories of planktonic organisms collected in 2003 were compared to those of the colder year 2002.     

Accumulation of agmatine in chayote (Sechium edule) leaves during development

Arginine, agmatine, putrescine and spermidine were found in the apical parts and leaves of chayote ( Sechium edule Swartz ) at various stages of development. The concentration of agmatine, the immediate decarboxylation product of L-arginine, increased considerably in young leaves at the first emergence of floral buds. Young leaves always had a relatively higher content of agmatine than older ones. There was a decrease in the concentration of agmatine from the apical part to the basal leaves. Agmatine was the predominant amine in young leaves at every stage of development (50–90% of the whole amine pool). It was also predominant in mature leaves when the floral buds appeared (70% of the total amine content). An accumulation of agmatine could not be found in other Cucurbitaceae species.     

Influence of Particle Size and Concentration on Rheological Behaviour of Reconstituted Apple Purees

This work investigates the impact of structural parameters on the rheological behaviour of apple purees. Reconstructed apple purees from 0 g/100 g up to 2.32 g/100 g of insoluble solids content and varying in particle size were prepared. Three different particle size distributions were obtained by mechanical treatment only, to modify both size and morphology of the particles without modifying the intrinsic rigidity of the cell walls. Rheological measurements showed that the insoluble solids content have a first order effect on the rheological behaviour of the suspensions: three concentrations domains were observed in both dynamic and flow measurements. A model is proposed for each domain. The existence of a weak network between particles is clearly shown over a critical concentration of insoluble solids (cell walls) depending on particle size distribution (semi-diluted domain). In a concentrated domain, particles are on close packing conditions and their apparent volume begin to shrink. Particle size and shape also play an important role on the rheological behaviour of reconstructed apple puree. Due to their irregular shape, cell clusters clog the medium at lower concentration compared to individual cells.
