Foraminiferal assemblages from the Bifurcatus Zone (Oxfordian, Upper Jurassic) are studied in the Navalperal section (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain). A total of 24 sampling stations and around 5,700 specimens of foraminifera were recognized on thin-section analysis and classified into two major categories: planktonic and benthic. The abundance of foraminifera (number of specimens/cm2) was calculated for both categories and the cyclic pattern was studied by spectral analysis, considering the autochthonous and para-autochthonous character of the studied assemblages. The Lomb-Scargle periodogram together with a permutation test were tested for performing the high-resolution spectral analysis, being particularly well suited for working with short time series and uneven sampling. Spectral analysis reveals the influence of orbital-scale Milankovitch cyclicity at the eccentricity, obliquity, and precession bands. Moreover, this incidence is significantly different depending on the analyzed group (benthic versus planktonic). Whereas the long-range eccentricity band is not distinguishable from a trend and the short-range eccentricity band is not statistically significant (at 90% confidence level), the obliquity band is better represented in the planktonic component and the precession band is better developed in the benthic group. Variations in temperature affecting upper waters, determined by obliquity-scale fluctuations, could be responsible for changes in the planktonic foraminiferal assemblage, while changes in nutrient availability and substrate oxygenation, as a consequence of input variations from source areas at the precession-scale cycles, could affect the benthic foraminiferal assemblage.  相似文献

Resistance to re-infection of rainbow trout to Loma salmonae, a microsporidian gill parasite has been previously documented and this study examined how rapidly this resistance develops. Naive rainbow trout were inoculated intraperitoneally (IP) with an inactivated spore-based vaccine and were then given an oral challenge with a high dose of L. salmonae spores at various weeks after being vaccinated. Non-vaccinated naive fish (exposed group) were challenged alongside of each group of vaccinated fish to ensure that the challenges were relatively standardised. In each group of fish, four weeks after the challenge, numbers of xenomas were counted on a gill arch for all fish. Vaccinated trout were completely resistant to a L. salmonae challenge six weeks after vaccination, although the onset of resistance began at approximately week 3, as observed with a reduction in the percent infected and xenoma intensity. The maximum percent infected for the vaccinated fish was 83% following a challenge two weeks following vaccination, whereas for the exposed group the maximum prevalence of 100% was reached several times. With continued research, a spore-based vaccine for L. salmonae has the potential to become the first commercially available parasite vaccine for fish.  相似文献

In a fine-grained Lower to Middle Kimmeridgian marly limestone rhythmite succession, with scarce benthos, fluctuations in ecological and depositional conditions that affected the substrate are detected by analysing trace-fossil assemblages. The dominant grey mudstones with Chondrites and Planolites superimposed on lumpy matrix sediments indicate both late colonisation of dysaerobic mixed layers and the completeness of the stratigraphic record. Major disruptions in rhythmic deposition and substrate colonisation are recorded at the base of thick intercalations of marls in sedimentary packages that were related to tectonic instability. Minor disruptions affected only the deposition of the overlying limestone beds. The trace-fossils reveal changes in the ecological and depositional conditions affecting the substrate during deposition of monotonous marly limestone rhythmites at levels of resolution higher than biostratigraphic, ecostratigraphic and taphonomic resolution. This research demonstrates the application of trace-fossil analysis to approach stratigraphic completeness (maturation) in homogeneous marly limestone rhythmites  相似文献

Four lithofacies and 12 microfacies types recognized in an upper Aptian section in the Sierra de Bedmar-Jódar (Prebetic of Jaén) represent shallow lagoonal environments (marl and marly limestone) and sand bars that delimited the lagoon. The lagoonal facies reflect subtidal restricted water circulation with low energy. The sand bar facies (intertidal environment) have upper surfaces that show the effects of supratidal and subaerial conditions. The presence of early fractures in particular lithofacies shows the importance of local synsedimentary tectonics during sedimentation. Thalassinoides, ?Arenicolites, Diplocraterion, Circolites, Gastrochaenolites and Trypanites are recorded in different beds of this section, reflecting various states of substrate consistency, in the form of firmground, hardground, and rockground. Whereas firmground conditions were dominant in the lower part of the section, hardgrounds and rockgrounds are mainly present in the upper part of the section. Four types of shallowing-upward elementary sequence are recognized. All the sequences show at the base mudstone or wackestone microfacies representing a lagoonal environment, overlain by sand-bar grain-pack-stone facies corresponding to a bar bounding the lagoon. The factors that controlled their development were carbonate production and tectonic movements.  相似文献

Two main types of microbial encrustation were identified in Middle Oxfordian to lowermost Kimmeridgian deposits in the Prebetic Zone (southern Spain), showing existing relationships between skeletal content, fabric and morphology of these organosedimentary structures. Laminated planar and concentric encrustations relate to peloidal fabrics (mainly constituted of microbes = microbial laminated fabrics s. str. and microbial oncoids s. str.), as well as to dense microbial fabrics periodically colonized by encrusting foraminifera (microbial laminated fabrics with nubeculariids and microbial oncoids with nubeculariids). Sedimentation rates, substrate stability and grain size, as well as illumination, influenced microbial growth pattern as major controlling factors in low-energy conditions, and forced palaeogeographic and stratigraphic patterns of distribution. Significant encrustation was identified in terrigenous-poor lithofacies from the middle (Transversarium-Bifurcatus zones) to the outer (Transversarium-Bimammatum zones) shelf in the Prebetic Zone. Rare-to-absent encrustation characterized terrigenous-rich deposits (Bimammatum and Planula zones) in the area.  相似文献

Ichnological analysis of the upper Ypresian–lower Lutetian interval at the Gorrondatxe section (W Pyrenees, N Spain), reveals a relationship between sea-level dynamics and the eco-sedimentary factors influencing trace fossil assemblages. The 600 m thick section of deep-sea turbiditic deposits contains 41 ichnospecies belonging to 28 ichnogenera, which are typical of the Nereites ichnofacies, and mostly of the Paleodictyon ichnosubfacies, suggesting deposition in a basin plain to fan-fringe setting. The trace fossil diversity and abundance fluctuate, irrespective of turbidite frequency. These ichnological features are strongly affected by trophic level changes related partly to sea-level dynamics according to the sequence stratigraphic interpretations for the studied section. Temperature, oxygenation and substrate changes are also considered as relevant factors. Increased ichnodiversity, particularly among graphoglyptids, coincides with moderate oligotrophy and stable ecological conditions. Eutrophisation, lowered oxygenation and drop of temperature, typical of low sea level, can reduce ichnodiversity.  相似文献

Full reliefs of Cruziana furcifera from the Lower-Middle Ordovician quartzite sandstone beds (Pochico Formation, southern Spain) points to deep, infaunal burrowing of trilobites. Some specimens show an unusual vertical extension with a wider lower part and a narrower upper part in cross section. They are referred to trilobites, which burrowed deeply in the sediment and were oriented obliquely head down and tail up. Deep burrowing seems to be common for other members of the Cruziana rugosa group, foremost C. rugosa and C. furcifera, less for C. goldfussi. The deep burrowing recorded in the discussed trace fossils can be referred to the earliest common infaunalization caused by trilobites and other arthropods during the Ordovician, probably in a response to a food competition on the sea floor, which promoted a behavioral plasticity within the same taxon or closely related taxa of trilobites.  相似文献

The main objective of this investigation was to examine the ultrastructural features of gills from rainbow trout experimentally infected with Loma salmonae to determine the morphological events that occur during the late stages of development of this parasite. Peripheral distribution of the mature parasites inside round xenomas was observed at weeks 5 and 6 postexposure (PE), but eventually the parasite occupied the entire xenoma. Degenerative changes were observed only in immature parasites at week 7 PE, and eventually an inflammatory reaction with a cellular infiltration was directed against mature spores. Round, flattened, and irregular shaped xenomas were observed at week 8 PE. The round xenomas showed a severe inflammatory response with disintegration of the xenoma membrane. This event was accompanied by eversion of polar tubes within the attacked xenoma and by the simultaneous presence of 2 tubular appendages, the type I and II tubules. Flattened xenomas were observed below the endothelium of gill lamella arteries. The irregular xenomas were located in the connective tissue of the gill filament and showed multiple projections occupied by spores. Both flattened and irregular xenomas showed no evidence of inflammatory reaction. An earlier proposed hypothesis is expanded to explain how L. salmonae is implanted beneath lamellar endothelium and within filament connective tissue.  相似文献

Ichnological analysis of a Middle Jurassic carbonate surface from the Betic Cordillera (southern Spain) reveals a complex trace fossil assemblage, including softground Ophiomorpha, firmground Arenicolites, Thalassinoides and Gastrochaenolites, and hardground Trypanites as well as possible Gastrochaenolites. The ecological replacement in the macrobenthic community is interpreted according to successive suites that are controlled mainly by substrate consistency. Variations in composition and abundance of trace fossils between suites can be ecologically and/or taphonomically determined.  相似文献
