The effect of a methanol extract of Rosa damascena Mill. flowers was studied, in comparison to the α-glucosidase inhibitor acarbose, in normal and diabetic rats. The inhibition mode of this extract was examined by measuring enzyme activity in different concentrations of substrate for Lineweaver–Burk plot analysis. The results show that Rosa damascena extract has an intensive inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase. Its inhibition was found to be noncompetitive. Oral administration of this plant extract (100 to 1000 mg/kg body wt.) significantly decreased blood glucose after maltose loading in normal and diabetic rats in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that Rosa damascena might exert an anti-diabetic effect by suppressing carbohydrate absorption from the intestine and can reduce the postprandial glucose level.  相似文献

Background

Diabetes is an important risk factor for atherosclerosis. The diabetic foot is characterized by the presence of arteriopathy and neuropathy. When ischemia is diagnosed, restoration of pulsatile blood flow by revascularization may be considered for salvaging the limb. The treatment options are angioplasty with or without stenting and surgical bypass or hybrid procedures combining the two.

Aims

To evaluate the outcomes of severe ischemic diabetic foot ulcers for which percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) was considered as the first-line vascular procedure. Factors associated with successful PTA were also evaluated.

Methods

In 80 consecutive diabetic patients with foot ulcers and severe limb ischemia, PTAwas performed if feasible. All patients were followed until healing or for one year. Clinical and angiographic factors in fluencing outcomes after PTA were sought by univariate and multivariate analysis.

Results

PTAwas done in 73 of the 80 (91.2%) patients, and considered clinically succe ssful in 58(79.9%). Successful PTA was significantly higher in patients with Superficial femoral artery, posterior Tibialis and dorsalis pedis arteries involvement in the univariate analysis. Seven patients were expired during the study follow up due to MI, pulmonary thromboembolism and GI bleeding.

Conclusion

PTA in diabetic patients with severe ischemic foot ulcers provided favorable. Some parameters could be used for predicting PTA successfulness.

Andean orogenesis has driven the development of very high plant diversity in the Neotropics through its impact on landscape evolution and climate. The analysis of the intraspecific patterns of genetic structure in plants would permit inferring the effects of Andean uplift on the evolution and diversification of Neotropical flora. In this study, using microsatellite markers and Bayesian clustering analyses, we report the presence of four genetic clusters for the palm Oenocarpus bataua var. bataua which are located within four biogeographic regions in northwestern South America: (a) Chocó rain forest, (b) Amotape‐Huancabamba Zone, (c) northwestern Amazonian rain forest, and (d) southwestern Amazonian rain forest. We hypothesize that these clusters developed following three genetic diversification events mainly promoted by Andean orogenic events. Additionally, the distinct current climate dynamics among northwestern and southwestern Amazonia may maintain the genetic diversification detected in the western Amazon basin. Genetic exchange was identified between the clusters, including across the Andes region, discarding the possibility of any cluster to diversify as a distinct intraspecific variety. We identified a hot spot of genetic diversity in the northern Peruvian Amazon around the locality of Iquitos. We also detected a decrease in diversity with distance from this area in westward and southward direction within the Amazon basin and the eastern Andean foothills. Additionally, we confirmed the existence and divergence of O. bataua var. bataua from var. oligocarpus in northern South America, possibly expanding the distributional range of the latter variety beyond eastern Venezuela, to the central and eastern Andean cordilleras of Colombia. Based on our results, we suggest that Andean orogenesis is the main driver of genetic structuring and diversification in O. bataua within northwestern South America.  相似文献

Ectomycorrhizal seedlings of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L. cv.), inoculated with the fungus Suillus bovinus (L. ex Fr.) O. Kuntze, and non-mycorrhizal controls were grown in growth units with a circulating culture solution. Steady-state nutrition and constant relative growth rates were achieved by means of varied relative nutrient addition rates and free access of nutrients. Typical mycorrhizas always formed within a short period of time after inoculation. The nutrition/growth relationships were in principle similar to previous studies under steady-state conditions: there were close linear relationships between relative addition rate, relative growth rate and internal nitrogen concentration, i.e. an equilibrium established between nutrients added and taken up. This occurred when infected and uninfected seedlings were grown separately. When grown together in the same growth unit, there are indications that the fungus influenced the exudation pattern of the uninfected seedlings. More carbon was thus provided to the unspecified microflora in the cultivation system, and it was able to grow and withhold nitrogen from the seedlings. The mycorrhizal infection did not increase the specific uptake capacity of the roots, and the fungus constituted a sink for carbon. However, the nitrogen productivity (growth rate per unit of nitrogen per unit of time) was similar for mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal seedlings, so that there might be mechanisms which compensate for the carbon cost.  相似文献

The rabbit is particularly suitable for investigating the development of mammalian circadian function. Blind at birth, the pups are only visited by the mother to be nursed once every 24 h for about 3 min and so can be studied largely without maternal interference. They anticipate the mother's visit with increased behavioral arousal and with a rise in body temperature, both of which represent endogenous circadian rhythms. We now report that in newborn pups the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus (SCN; the main circadian pacemaker in mammals) show endogenous 24‐h rhythmicity in the expression of the clock genes Per1, Per2, and Bmal1. Pups nursed from postnatal days 1 to 7 and fasted to day 9 showed the same rhythms of clock gene expression as normally nursed controls. We also report that these rhythms are entrained by nursing. Pups killed on postnatal days 3–4 showed the same rhythms in gene expression as pups in the previous experiment, whereas littermates subsequently nursed from postnatal days 4 to 7 with nursing delayed 6 h showed a corresponding shift in the diurnal pattern of clock gene expression. Consistent with this, two groups of pups implanted with telemetric thermal sensors and nursed 6 h apart had daily patterns in body temperature synchronized with the two different nursing times. We conclude that the expression of clock genes associated with the newborn rabbit's circadian system is entrained by nonphotic cues accompanying nursing, the exact nature of which now needs to be clarified. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We review resilience to natural and anthropogenic disturbance of palm populations and communities in tropical America. Response of palms to disturbance depends on their morphological traits, their reproductive strategies and the impacts of these traits and strategies on phenology and gene flow. Human impact induces changes in genetic structure, increasing endogamy and genetic drift in fragmented populations. Forest fragmentation and harvest of palm organs are well documented whereas effects of intermediate disturbance like selective logging, hunting or fire remain poorly known. We recommend emphasis on long-term experiments and on the use of mechanistic approaches in future research to facilitate integration of available data into a theoretical ecological framework.  相似文献

In mammals, D-fructose transport takes place across the brush-border membrane of the small intestine through GLUT5, a member of the facilitative glucose transporter family. In the present paper, we describe and characterize for the first time the apical transport of D-fructose in chicken intestine. Brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) were obtained from jejunum of 5- to 6-wk-old chickens. D-Fructose uptake by BBMV from chicken jejunum comprises a saturable component and a simple diffusion process. The maximal rate of transport (Vmax) for D-fructose was 2.49 nmol·(mg prot)–1·s–1, the Michaelis constant (Km) was 29 mM, and the diffusion constant (Kd) was 25 nl·(mg prot)–1·s–1. The apical transport of D-fructose was Na+-independent, phlorizin-, phloretin-, and cytochalasin B-insensitive, and did not show cis-inhibition by D-glucose or D-galactose. These properties, together with the detection of specific GLUT5 mRNA, indicate the presence of a low-affinity high-capacity GLUT5-type carrier in the chicken jejunum, responsible for the entry of D-fructose across the brush-border membrane of enterocytes.  相似文献

Two new species of Arachnothryx (Guettardeae, Rubiaceae) from the cloud forest of the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico are described and illustrated. Arachnothryx axillaris together with A. heteranthera are the only two species in the genus with axillary inflorescences, but otherwise they are not similar. The new species is more similar to A. capitellata, but it differs in pubescence and inflorescence morphology. Arachnothryx flores-olverae can be confused with A. buddleioides mainly because they share discolorous leaves with densely tomentose pubescence, but they differ in stipule and inflorescence morphology. With these two new species the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca becomes more evidently the main hotspot of species diversity for the genus.  相似文献

Mauritia flexuosa dominated palm swamps are an important forest resource covering over 30,000 km2 across the Amazon basin. In Ecuadorean Amazonia, Mauritia flexuosa, a dioecious and arborescent palm species, forms small and isolated populations or large and dense stands on poorly drained soils. How these populations are genetically interconnected and how genetic diversity varies between cohorts of different ages remains little studied although they are important for conservation of these ecosystems. The genetic structure of Mauritia flexuosa was studied in five natural stands using eight microsatellite loci and two cohorts (seedling and adults). In addition, age structure and sex ratio within the stands were assessed using transects. The age structure of the studied Mauritia flexuosa stands is represented by a high number of seedlings (mean = 1,153.6/ha) and adults (mean = 563.2/ha), with a sex ratio favoring female individuals (1.42:1). These stands are also characterized by a fine‐scale genetic structure, high observed heterozygosity (mean: HO seedlings=0.52; HO adults=0.52), high inbreeding (mean: FIS seedlings = 0.26; FIS adults = 0.26), low number of migrants (Nm=0.29), strong genetic differentiation (mean: pairwise RST/ D‐values seedlings = 0.08/ 0.74; mean RST/D‐values adults = 0.17/ 0.76), and an average effective population size (Ne) of 191.42 individuals. No intergenerational genetic variation was detected between seedlings and adults. We suggest that the high genetic diversity and inbreeding as well as the strong differentiation among stands of these populations could be explained, at least partially, by a low genetic connectivity among populations. Destructive harvesting of its fruits and defaunation will be major threats to Mauritia flexuosa populations in the future. Abstract in Spanish is available with online material  相似文献
