Efficiency of polysaccharide translam for early treatment of acute radiation illness

Antiradiation therapeutic efficiency of translam (1-->3; 1-->6-beta-D-glucan) produced by enzymatic synthesis out of laminarin, polysaccharide of Laminaria cychorioides, has been studied in four animal species (mice, guinea-pigs, dogs, monkeys). A stable curative effect has been observed following its administration within first 24 h after radiation exposure at doses that cause acute radiation sickness (about LD90). The preparation is nontoxic and has a broad therapeutic range which permits its practical application.     

Clusterization of halophilic and halotolerant eubacteria using whole-cell protein electrophoresis data

Total cell proteins of the nineteen halophilic and halotolerant eubacteria isolated from marine sediments and highly mineralized formation waters of oil fields were investigated by SDS gel electrophoresis. The microorganisms studied, phenotypically identified as belonging to the genera Dietzia, Rhodococcus, Staphylococcus, Cytophaga, Brevibacterium, and Archangium, were found to form clearly distinguishable clusters (20-30% similarity at the generic level) on the dendrogram derived from electrophoretic protein patterns. Protein similarity data confirmed the heterogeneity of Rhodococcus maris and its relatedness to the genus Dietza.     

Absorption of 14C-dicarboxylic acids by bacteria of the family Halobacteriaceae

Cultures of the family Halobacteriaceae belonging to the species Halobacterium halobium, H. cutirubrum, H. vallismortis and Halococcus morrhuae were shown to be capable of assimilating 14C-succinate. Halobacterium salinarium lacked this ability. The transport systems of C4-dicarboxylates differed in Halobacterium halobium 996 and H. vallismortis 1398, on the one hand, and Halococcus morrhuae 1235, on the other. The differences involve the kinetic parameters and stereospecificity of transport systems, the ability to take up different labelled C4-dicarboxylates, the pH-dependence of transport, and the action of CCCP, a protonophorous uncoupling agent. Halobacteria are capable of labelled succinate uptake at a lower NaCl content in the incubation medium than it is necessary for their growth. The optimal temperature for 14C-succinate uptake by halobacteria is higher than the optimal temperature of their growth. For all of the studied cultures, the transport system of dicarboxylate was shown to differ from that of E. coli common for C4-dicarboxylates and aspartate.     

Immunostimulating and anticoagulating activity of fucoidan from brown algae Fucus evanescens of Okhotskoe sea]

Fucoidan--nontoxic sulfated polysaccharide was isolated from brown algae Fucus evanescens in Okhotskoe Sea. Chemical analysis of the compound was performed, it was shown that fucoidan is freely soluble in water and acid solutions. Immunotropic and anticoagulating properties of the compound were evaluated in comparison with heparin. It was demonstrated that fucoidan in wide range of doses stimulated phagocytic and bactericidic activity at leucocytes of mice peritoneal exudate. Heparin on the contrary demonstrated depressive effect on these functions at high dose. It was shown that fucoidan has dose-dependent anticoagulating activity in vitro and in vivo comparable with heparin activity. The results of investigation demonstrated possibility of fucoidan application as immunomodulating and anticoagulating agent of plant origin.     

Feasibility of decreasing the adhesive activity of Corynebacterium diphtheriae by biopolymers of natural origin]

Possible decreasing of the Corynebacterium diphtheriae adhesive activity by natural biopolymers was studied. It was shown that the strains of C.diphtheriae circulating on the Primorye Territory had middle, low or minimal adhesive activity. Natural biopolymers were found to decrease the adhesive properties of C.diphtheriae. The results of the study are promising for further investigation of natural biopolymers as agents preventing C.diphtheriae colonization on the stomatopharynx mucosa.
