Complete Genome Sequence of an H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus Isolated from Egret in Lake Dongting Wetland

We isolated a recombinant H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) from fresh egret feces in the Ardeidae protection region of the Dongting Lake wetland area in China, and it was designated A/Egret/Hunan/1/2012(H9N2). This is the first report of isolating H9N2 AIV from wild birds in the Dongting Lake wetland. Its eight gene segments are generated by reassortment of gene segments of different AIV subtypes. These results are helpful for understanding the epidemiology and evolution of AIV in wild birds during migration.     

Data estimation and the colour of time series.

There has been a long debate on the source of temporal fluctuations in natural population densities. The difficulty is that unpredictable irregularities might be attributed either to external environmental factors or to chaotic dynamics of populations, or even to the interaction of these two factors. Some years ago Cohen (1995) pointed out that real time series follow redshifted Fourier power spectra, while the simplest chaotic population dynamical models are mostly blueshifted. Since then, the controversy has focused on comparisons of Fourier spectra originating from different models and data. Here, we show experimentally that estimation process by human observers shifts power spectra to the red. This result implies that because of estimation distortion, real population data must be less redshifted than many recorded time series suggest.     

Partial 1p monosomy in a physically and mentally retarded boy

An 8-year-old boy is reported with marked mental and physical retardation, microcephaly, hypertelorism, mongoloid palpebral fissures, hypoplasia of the maxillary portion of the face, and other discrete anomalies. Deletion of the distal portion of the short arm of the chromosome 1 and the karyotype 46,XY, del(1)(p33----pter) was detected.     

Expression of vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein in human developing spinal cord

Summary Expression of intermediate filament proteins was studied in human developing spinal cord using immunoperoxidase and double-label immunofluorescence methods with monoclonal antibodies to vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Vimentin was found in the processes of radial glial cells in 6-week embryos, while GFAP appeared in vimentin-positive astroglial cells at 8–10 weeks. GFAP and vimentin were present in approximately equal amounts in differentiating astrocytes in 23-week spinal cord. In 30-week fetuses, astrocytes reacted strongly for GFAP, while both the reaction intensity and the number of vimentin-positive cells fluctuated predominantly in the grey matter. No clear-cut transition from vimentin to GFAP was noticed during the development of astrocytes. The majority of ependymal cells in 23-week fetuses contained vimentin but only a few of them reacted for GFAP. The expression of vimentin continued during the whole development of the ependymal layer, in contrast to the reactivity for GFAP which disappeared between the 30th week and term.     

Cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes in glass workers occupationally exposed to mineral oils

Chromosome aberration tests were carried out in a group of 31 pressed glass makers operating an automatic line of press-and-blow machines known to release mineral oil mists containing relatively high concentrations of the mutagenic chemicals belonging to a class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The workers were exposed to the mineral oil aerosol levels that did not exceed the Czechoslovak maximum allowable concentration limit of 5 mg . m-1 of air. The tests revealed that the frequency of aberrant cells (% AB.C.) and the value of breaks per cell (B/C) ratio found in mineral oil-exposed workers were increased significantly, accounting for 4.65 +/- 0.29% AB.C. (0.0532 B/C) vs. 1.13 +/- 0.19% AB.C. (0.0113 B/C) seen in matching controls. Also, a higher rate of dicentrics, reciprocal translocations and cells with pulverization was observed in this group of glass workers. These finding are considered as evidence suggesting that these workers might experience an increased risk of genetic injury due to exposure to mineral oil mists.     

Magnetic interaction of manganese with pheophytin anion-radical and chlorophyll cation-radical in reaction centers of the photosystem II

The influence of Mn on saturation curves of ESR spectra of Ph(-) and P(+)(680) at 1-200K in samples with different content of Mn has been studied. An analysis of these data and those on photoinduced changes of fluorescence yield of chlorophyll leads to the conclusion that the Mn-containing centre in Photosystem 2 is a cluster of 4 Mn atoms, two of which can be replaced by Mg(2+) or any other divalent metal. The distances between Mn Na Ph as well as between Mn and P(680) have been estimated.
