Compared to a healthy intervertebral disc, the geometry and the material properties of the involved tissues are altered in a degenerated disc. It is not completely understood how this affects the mechanical behaviour of a motion segment. In order to study the influence of disc degeneration on motion segment mechanics a three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element model of the L3/L4 functional unit was used. Different grades of disc degeneration were simulated by varying disc height and bulk modulus of the nucleus pulposus. The model was loaded with pure moments of 10Nm in the three main anatomic planes. The finite element model predicted the same trends for intersegmental rotation and intradiscal pressure as described in the literature for in vitro studies. A comparison between calculated intersegmental rotation and experimental data showed a mean difference of 1.9 degrees while the mean standard deviation was 2.5 degrees . A mildly degenerated disc increases intersegmental rotation for all loading cases. With further increasing disc degeneration intersegmental rotation is decreased. For axial rotation the decrease takes place in the final stage. Intradiscal pressure is lower while facet joint force and maximum von Mises stress in the annulus are higher in a degenerated compared to a healthy disc. 相似文献

The aim of this investigation is to demonstrate the reasons of an opportunist feeder to select some components of the available
food supply and to avoid others. Object of this test is the eurytopic and euryhaline sand goby,Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas), from the Luebeck Bight. It inhabits both sand habitats as well as bottoms mixed with pebbles or continuous hard
substrates. Therefore, it is often in close contact withMytilus-belts which present a very rich food supply of small crustaceans. The selectivity behaviour of sand gobies from a sand/clay
ecotone was compared with that of populations from a stony pier and a sand bottom during the reproduction period. Regarding
the numbers of prey organisms, crustaceans of the periphyton were generally preferred at the pier but avoided in the ecotone.
The same is valid for prey organisms of the psammal which were preferred by gobies of the sand bottom but mostly avoided by
populations of mixed bottoms. Analyses of size selections revealed that the preferred gammarids orJaera isopods were between 2 and 5 mm length. A balanced relation of goby biomass and utilizable food supply (predatory impact

Using a radiometric assay with glycochenodeoxycholic acid as substrate, bile acid:3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase activity was found in 105,000 g supernatant fractions of liver, proximal intestine, and adrenal gland homogenates from adult hamsters. Optimum conditions for measurement of the hepatic enzyme were determined. In both male and female animals sulfation only occurred at the 7 alpha-position. Saturation analysis with glycohenodeoxycholic acid revealed that the higher activity observed in fractions from female compared to male hamsters was due to a 4-fold lower apparent Km (79 muM vs. 317 muM) for this bile acid in the females. The sulfation of glycohenodeoxycholic acid was competitively inhibited by glycolithocholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, and ursodeoxycholic acid. While the drivers of primate persistence in forest fragments have been often considered at the population level, the strategies to persist in these habitats have been little investigated at the individual or group level. Considering the rapid variation of fragment characteristics over time, longitudinal data on primates living in fragmented habitats are necessary to understand the key elements for their persistence. Since translocated animals have to cope with unfamiliar areas and face unknown fluctuations in food abundance, they offer the opportunity to study the factors contributing to successful migration between fragments. Here, we illustrated the evolution of the foraging strategies of translocated collared brown lemurs (Eulemur collaris) over an 18-year period in the Mandena Conservation Zone, south-east Madagascar. Our aim was to explore the ability of these frugivorous lemurs to adjust to recently colonized fragmented forests. Although the lemurs remained mainly frugivorous throughout the study period, over the years we identified a reduction in the consumption of leaves and exotic/pioneer plant species. These adjustments were expected in frugivorous primates living in a degraded area, but we hypothesize that they may also reflect the initial need to cope with an unfamiliar environment after the translocation. Since fragmentation is often associated with the loss of large trees and native vegetation, we suggest that the availability of exotic and/or pioneer plant species can provide an easy-to-access, nonseasonal food resource and be a key factor for persistence during the initial stage of the recolonization. 相似文献
