Interspecific competition can occur when species are unable to distinguish between conspecific and heterospecific mates or competitors when they occur in sympatry. Selection in response to interspecific competition can lead to shifts in signalling traits—a process called agonistic character displacement. In two fan-throated lizard species—Sitana laticeps and Sarada darwini—females are morphologically indistinguishable and male agonistic signalling behaviour is similar. Consequently, in areas where these species overlap, males engage in interspecific aggressive interactions. To test whether interspecific male aggression between Si. laticeps and Sa. darwini results in agonistic character displacement, we quantified species recognition and signalling behaviour using staged encounter assays with both conspecifics and heterospecifics across sympatric and allopatric populations of both species. We found an asymmetric pattern, wherein males of Si. laticeps but not Sa. darwini showed differences in competitor recognition and agonistic signalling traits (morphology and behaviour) in sympatry compared with allopatry. This asymmetric shift in traits is probably due to differences in competitive abilities between species and can minimize competitive interactions in zones of sympatry. Overall, our results support agonistic character displacement, and highlight the role of asymmetric interspecific competition in driving shifts in social signals.  相似文献

Regeneration-competent callus of Phaseolus vulgaris and P. acutifolius was obtained from mature embryo explants on a medium containing thidiazuron and indole-3-acetic acid. For the P. vulgaris genotype Xan-159, regeneration was achieved from cotyledon explants, but not from embryonic axis explants. Both explants could be used for the P. acutifolius genotype NI 574 but embryonic axes gave the best results. In-vitro-rooted plantlets of P. acutifolius could readily be established in the greenhouse. For P. vulgaris hardening problems with in-vitro-rooted plantlets could be overcome by means of in vitro grafting. A reproducible Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated genetic transformation method that delivers fertile and morphologically normal transgenic plants was developed for cultivated tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius L. Gray). Factors contributing to higher transformation efficiencies include (1) a low initial concentration of bacteria coupled with a longer cocultivation period with callus, (2) an initial selection of callus on a medium containing low levels of the selectable agent, (3) omission of the selectable agent from the medium during callus differentiation to shoots and (4) the efficient conversion of transgenic shoots into fertile plants. All plants regenerated with this procedure (T0) were stably transformed, and the introduced foreign genes were inherited in a Mendelian fashion in most of the 33 independent transformants. Integration, stable transmission and high expression levels of the transgenes were observed in the T1 and/or T3 progenies of the transgenic lines. The binary transformation vectors contained the -glucuronidase reporter gene, the neomycin phosphotransferase II selectable marker gene and either an arcelin 1 or an arcelin 5 gene. Arcelins are seed proteins that are very abundant in some wild P. vulgaris L. genotypes showing resistance to the storage insect Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera, Bruchidae). Transgenic beans from two different cultivated P. acutifolius genotypes with high arcelin levels were infested with Z. subfasciatus, but they were only marginally less susceptible to infestation than the non-transgenic P. acutifolius. Because obligate corallivorous butterflyfish feed exclusively on coral polyps, they are particularly sensitive to changes in coral cover and its spatial distribution. To understand how such differences in coral cover influence obligate corallivores, we examined the densities and foraging behavior of Melon butterflyfish Chaetodon trifasciatus across three reefs in the Lakshadweep archipelago. These reefs suffered differential bleaching mortality after the 2010 El Niño Southern Oscillation, resulting in wide variation in coral cover and community composition. Despite these differences, C. trifasciatus were able to persist at similar densities across reefs. However, our analysis of high‐resolution video recordings of multiple focal fish revealed that time budgets, bite rates, and diet selectivity differed significantly. Fish in resource‐poor reefs spent more time moving between coral patches and less time foraging than ones in relatively resource‐rich reefs. We also found that fish in resource‐poor reefs had higher bite rates and were less selective in their foraging. Our results provide novel insights into how obligate corallivores cope with even large differences in resource availability. At a time when we are rapidly losing corals to repeated climate‐induced bleaching events, this flexibility may represent a critical mechanism that enables persistence of obligate corallivores in resource‐poor reefs, even if it does not guarantee longer‐term survival.  相似文献

Novel curcumin analogs were synthesized using Knoevenagel condensation to convert enolic diketones of curcumin into non-enolizable ones and Schiff bases were prepared using a bioactive thiosemicarbazide pharmacophore. Copper(II) conjugates of all synthesized ligands were prepared and structurally characterized as well as evaluated for their potential of inhibiting TNF-induced NF-kappaB activation and proliferation in human leukemic KBM-5 cells wherein compound 13 was found to be more potent than curcumin. Compounds were further examined on other tumor cell lines such as Jurkat, H1299, and MM1, respectively.  相似文献

A new high-elevation scorpion species of the genus Scorpiops is described from the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Scorpiops spitiensis sp. nov. is the second highest-elevation scorpion species in Asia and the first one from India occurring at elevations above 4200 m. The new species closely resembles Scorpiops petersii, but it can be distinguished from it based on a suit of characters, one of which is the presence of 16 trichobothria on the external aspect of the patella, which is unique to the new species.  相似文献

Responses to inoculation with N2-fixing bacteria were studied in relation to genotypic differences in pearl millet, effect of nitrogen levels, and FYM additions in India. In some experiments, inoculation increased mean grain yield up to 33% over the uninoculated control, whereas in the remaining 11 experiments there was no significant increase. Increased grain yields, >10% over the uninoculated controls were observed in 46% of the experiments withAzospirillum lipoferum (18.7% average increase) and withAzotobacter chroococcum (13.6% average increase). Yield increases were nil or reduced in three experiments withAzos. lipoferum and four experiments withAztb. chroococcum. In two experiments continued inoculation for two or three years resulted in increased grain, plant biomass yield, and N uptake. Interactions of bacterial cultures with cultivars or years were not observed. The counts of the inoculated strains increased two to three-fold when inoculation was continued for three years. Repeated inoculations increased the mean cumulative N uptake from season 1 to season 3 by 19 kg ha–1. Repeated inoculations withAztb. chroococcum andAzos. lipoferum increased mean grain yield of a succeeding crop by 14.4% and 9.8%, respectively, over the uninoculated control. Inoculation increased the efficiency of N-assimilation by pearl millet. Marginal increase in nitrogenase activity, associated with the inoculated plants was observed during later stages of plant growth. Increased leaf nitrate reductase activity (NRA) was observed after inoculation with these bacteria. The responses to inoculation are mainly attributable to increased plant N assimilation which could be the effect of growth promoting substances secreated by the bacteria; and thus the contribution from BNF may be small.CRISAT, journal article 732.  相似文献

For the first time, plant regeneration of several domesticatedgenotypes of Phaseolus polyanthus Greenman (year bean) has beenachieved. Thidiazuron in combination with indole-3-acetic acidwas used to induce morphogenic, green nodular callus from explantsthat had been obtained either from greenhouse-grown plants orfrom in vitro -germinated seeds. Of the six genotypes of P.polyanthus tested, five produced shoots in vitro. Regeneratedshoots that formed roots in vitro were established in the greenhouse,whereas non-rooted shoots could be established in vitro by grafting.Morphologically normal progeny plants were obtained from thegreenhouse-established regenerants. However, by using the sameprocedure, no regeneration response was observed in two domesticatedand two wild genotypes of P. coccineus L. (runner bean). Reactions of [MCl2(tmeda)] (M = Cd or Hg; tmeda = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine) with MSeC5H3(R-3)N (R = H or Me) gave selenolate complexes of the general formula [M{SeC5H3(R-3)N}2(tmeda)n] (M/R/n = Cd/H/1 (1); Cd/Me/1 (2); Hg/H/1 (3) and Hg/Me/0 (4)). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Vis and NMR (1H, 13C, 77Se, 113Cd and 199Hg) spectroscopy. The crystal structures of {SeC5H3(Me-3)N}2, [M(SeC5H4N)2(tmeda)] (M = Cd or Hg) and [Hg{SeC5H3(Me-3)N}2] were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex, [Cd(SeC5H4N)2(tmeda)] comprises of an octahedral cadmium atom containing three chelating, two SeC5H4N and one tmeda, ligands. The corresponding mercury complex adopts a severely distorted tetrahedral configuration defined by the two-monodentate selenolate and chelating tmeda. The complex, [Hg{SeC5H3(Me-3)N}2] has a linear structure with monodentate selenolate ligand. The cadmium complexes undergo a two-step decomposition (TGA) leading to the formation of CdSe. Thermolysis of [Cd{SeC5H3(R-3)N}2(tmeda)n] in hexadecylamine (HDA)/tri-n-octylphosphineoxide (TOPO) yields CdSe nanoparticles, which were characterized by UV-Vis, XRD, SEM and TEM (in part).  相似文献

Exposure of pancreatic beta-cells to interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) alters their protein expression and phenotype. Previous work has shown that IL-1 beta inhibited proinsulin conversion in rat islets, but the mechanism of this inhibition remained unknown. To investigate this phenomenon further, we examined purified rat beta-cells for IL-1 beta-induced inhibition of proinsulin conversion and nitric oxide (NO)-dependency of this inhibitory process. Rat beta-cells were cultured for 24 h with or without IL-1 beta and the inducible-nitric-oxide-synthase (iNOS) inhibitor N(G)-methyl-L-arginine (NMA). Exposure to IL-1 beta suppressed proinsulin-1 and proinsulin-2 synthesis by more than 50 %. Conversion of both proinsulin isoforms was also delayed. The suppressive effects of IL-1 beta on proinsulin synthesis and conversion were prevented by addition of NMA. Exposure to IL-1 beta also decreased the expression of the proinsulin convertase (PC) PC2. This decrease in PC2 expression was NO-dependent. In conclusion, IL-1 beta inhibition of proinsulin conversion in rat beta-cells occurs via an NO-mediated pathway.  相似文献
