A sample of seventy-twoAphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) clones was collected in south-eastern France. The efficiency of these clones to transmit a
potyvirus (papaya ringspot virus T-strain) was assessed in controlled conditions. In a first screening, the virus was transmitted
by all clones and a 3.5-fold difference between the most and least efficient clones was obtained. During subsequent trials,
which were carried out to confirm the differences in the transmission efficiency of these clones, only one clone proved to
be more efficient than the others. This difference appeared consistent over a 1-year period, and was also confirmed with 4
other related potyviruses.
Résumé Un échantillon de 72 clones deA. gossypii a été collecté dans le Sud-Est de la France. L'efficacité de transmission d'un potyvirus (PRSV-T) a été mesurée en conditions contr?lées pour chacun de ces clones. Un premier screening a permis de montrer que tous les clones transmettaient ce virus, et qu'un rapport de 3,5 existait entre l'efficacité de transmission du clone le plus efficace et celle du clone le moins efficace. Au cours des essais ultérieurs destinés à confirmer ces différences, un seul clone s'est montré significativement plus efficace que les autres. Cette différence s'est maintenue pendant la période d'essais (1 an). Elle s'est reproduite avec 4 autre potyvirus apparentés.相似文献

Results claiming linkage on two chromosomes for schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar affective disorder (BP) were prematurely published in Nature at the end of the '80s. This ended up into disappointment. The knowledge accumulated from the first generation of unsuccessful molecular genetics studies of SZ and BP provided a stronger basis for the following generation of linkage studies that are now yielding encouraging converging results. Hence, we report several genomics susceptibility loci for SZ and BP, some of them being probably shared by the two major psychiatric illnesses whereas others could be specific to each. 相似文献

Common generalized vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting disorder characterized by a chronic and progressive loss of melanocytes from the epidermis and follicular reservoir. However, the mechanism of melanocyte disappearance has never been clearly understood, and the intervention of cellular and humoral autoimmune phenomena as primary events remains unproven. In this review, is discussed the data supporting the major theories of vitiligo, namely melanocyte destruction (autoimmune, neural and impaired redox status) and melanocyte inhibition or defective adhesion. Based on recent morphologic findings in vivo supporting a chronic detachment and transepidermal loss of melanocytes in common generalized vitiligo, a new theory is suggested proposing melanocytorrhagy as the primary defect underlying melanocyte loss, integrating most of the possible triggering/precipitating/enhancing effects of other known factors. 相似文献

Bacillus subtilis can use methionine as the sole sulfur source, indicating an efficient conversion of methionine to cysteine. To characterize this pathway, the enzymatic activities of CysK, YrhA and YrhB purified in Escherichia coli were tested. Both CysK and YrhA have an O-acetylserine-thiol-lyase activity, but YrhA was 75-fold less active than CysK. An atypical cystathionine beta-synthase activity using O-acetylserine and homocysteine as substrates was observed for YrhA but not for CysK. The YrhB protein had both cystathionine lyase and homocysteine gamma-lyase activities in vitro. Due to their activity, we propose that YrhA and YrhB should be renamed MccA and MccB for methionine-to-cysteine conversion. Mutants inactivated for cysK or yrhB grew similarly to the wild-type strain in the presence of methionine. In contrast, the growth of an DeltayrhA mutant or a luxS mutant, inactivated for the S-ribosyl-homocysteinase step of the S-adenosylmethionine recycling pathway, was strongly reduced with methionine, whereas a DeltayrhA DeltacysK or cysE mutant did not grow at all under the same conditions. The yrhB and yrhA genes form an operon together with yrrT, mtnN, and yrhC. The expression of the yrrT operon was repressed in the presence of sulfate or cysteine. Both purified CysK and CymR, the global repressor of cysteine metabolism, were required to observe the formation of a protein-DNA complex with the yrrT promoter region in gel-shift experiments. The addition of O-acetyl-serine prevented the formation of this protein-DNA complex. 相似文献

The efficiency of carbon sequestration by the biological pump could decline in the coming decades because respiration tends to increase more with temperature than photosynthesis. Despite these differences in the short‐term temperature sensitivities of photosynthesis and respiration, it remains unknown whether the long‐term impacts of global warming on metabolic rates of phytoplankton can be modulated by evolutionary adaptation. We found that respiration was consistently more temperature dependent than photosynthesis across 18 diverse marine phytoplankton, resulting in universal declines in the rate of carbon fixation with short‐term increases in temperature. Long‐term experimental evolution under high temperature reversed the short‐term stimulation of metabolic rates, resulting in increased rates of carbon fixation. Our findings suggest that thermal adaptation may therefore have an ameliorating impact on the efficiency of phytoplankton as primary mediators of the biological carbon pump. 相似文献

Data on the swim speed, dive depth and feeding rates of three Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) foraging in summer 1998/1999 in Adélie Land, Antarctica were collected using dorsally-mounted loggers, in tandem with oesophageal temperature sensors. Swim speed could be integrated, together with the rate of change of depth, to determine dive and return-to-surface angles. Overall, birds increased rates of change of depth during commuting phases so that dive angles were steeper in dives terminating at greater depths. Angles of descent and ascent during feeding dives were greater than during non-feeding dives. Variation in the descent angle over time of particular dives was generally less than 10°, but the angles of the ascent phases varied more widely. The importance of selecting the optimum descent and ascent angles with respect to prey exploitation, oxygen stores and time gained in the feeding area over the course of a dive by diving at a steeper angle is discussed. 相似文献

The great cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo is thought to have a wettable plumage, providing low body insulation during foraging. Great cormorants should thus be constrained by water temperatures, and show high energy requirements. Surprisingly, this species has one of the widest breeding distributions of all diving birds, and does not require more food than these other species. We explored this apparent paradox by comparing the insulative properties of body plumage in four subspecies of great cormorants ranging from tropical to polar regions. We found that all subspecies retained an insulating air layer in their plumage, which was, however, much thinner than for other species of diving birds. Detailed examination of the plumage showed that each cormorant body feather has a loose, instantaneously wet, outer section and a highly waterproof central portion. This indicates that the plumage of great cormorants is only partly wettable, and that birds maintain a thin layer of air in their plumage. Our findings suggest an unusual morphological-functional adaptation to diving which balances the antagonist constraints of thermoregulation and buoyancy. 相似文献

Quantifying variation in ecosystem metabolism is critical to predicting the impacts of environmental change on the carbon cycle. We used a metabolic scaling framework to investigate how body size and temperature influence phytoplankton community metabolism. We tested this framework using phytoplankton sampled from an outdoor mesocosm experiment, where communities had been either experimentally warmed (+ 4 °C) for 10 years or left at ambient temperature. Warmed and ambient phytoplankton communities differed substantially in their taxonomic composition and size structure. Despite this, the response of primary production and community respiration to long‐ and short‐term warming could be estimated using a model that accounted for the size‐ and temperature dependence of individual metabolism, and the community abundance‐body size distribution. This work demonstrates that the key metabolic fluxes that determine the carbon balance of planktonic ecosystems can be approximated using metabolic scaling theory, with knowledge of the individual size distribution and environmental temperature. 相似文献
