Above- and below-ground production and morphological characteristics of papyrus wetlands were measured at monthly intervals from July 2005 to June 2006 at Rubondo Island, Lake Victoria, Tanzania. The average value of live culm biomass (5,789 ± 435 g DW m−2) was higher than that of umbel biomass (2,902 ± 327 g DW m−2) by 50%. Root to rhizome means biomass value ratio was 1:1.8, rhizome biomass (4,144 ± 452 g DW m−2) being higher than roots biomass (2,254 ± 314 g DW m−2) by 45%. Direct proportion was observed between shoot density and culm–unit (culms and umbels) biomass. The average value of detritus/litter biomass (1,306 ± 315 g DW m−2) was less than total aerial biomass by 86%. The values of biomass are average of 12 sampling months from July 2005 to June 2006.  相似文献

A demonstration project was set up to create two small papyrus wetlands in villages on the shores of Lake Victoria near Rubondo Island National Park, aimed at helping the community to replenish the fish stock in the lake and to improve socio-economics. The wetlands were constructed by using locally available means and they are owned and successfully managed by the villages to support community-based activities. We describe the approach, methodology and design of these plots. 2 years after the wetlands were created, the above-ground papyrus biomass was found to be comparable with that of pristine papyrus wetlands at Mlaga Bay in Rubondo Island National Park. Light trap data shows increased fish around the area. This correlated well with the results of questionnaire survey from the community around the created wetland. Our study shows that the degraded wetlands around Lake Victoria can be recreated by using locally available means, to restore most of the vital functions of those wetlands as they were before destruction, and improve the socio-economics of the local communities.  相似文献

The chronic inflammatory response plays an important role in adverse cardiac remodelling and the development of heart failure (HF). There is also evidence that in the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation is accompanied by antibody and complement deposits in the heart, suggestive of a true autoimmune response. However, the role of antibody‐mediated immune responses in HF progression is less clear. We assessed whether immune cell infiltration and immunoglobulin levels are associated with HF type and disease stage, taking sex differences into account. We found IgG deposits and increased infiltration of immune cells in the affected myocardium of patients with end‐stage HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF, n = 20). Circulating levels of IgG1 and IgG3 were elevated in these patients. Furthermore, the percentage of transitional/regulatory B cells was decreased (from 6.9% to 2.4%) compared with healthy controls (n = 5). Similarly, increased levels of circulating IgG1 and IgG3 were observed in men with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD, n = 5), possibly an early stage of HF with preserved EF (HFpEF). In conclusion, IgG deposits and infiltrates of immune cells are present in end‐stage HFrEF. In addition, both LVDD patients and end‐stage HFrEF patients show elevated levels of circulating IgG1 and IgG3, suggesting an antibody‐mediated immune response upon cardiac remodelling, which in the early phase of remodelling appear to differ between men and women. These immunoglobulin subclasses might be used as marker for pre‐stage HF and its progression. Future identification of auto‐antigens might open possibilities for new therapeutic interventions.  相似文献

The future of Lake Victoria and its people is highly related to the future of its papyrus wetlands. This appears to be threatened by the overdrawing of water at two dams at the outlet of Lake Victoria in Uganda, which can lead to wetland loss, tilapia fisheries collapse, enhanced eutrophication of the lake, loss of food security for the empoverished population, and a measurable contribution to global warming.  相似文献

Provision of water to wildlife is crucial during dry season along the Great Ruaha River (GRR) in Ruaha National Park due to mismanagement of water resources upstream. This paper shows that wildlife in the dry areas of the park utilizes effectively the water from natural and artificial waterholes dug in the sandy riverbed of the GRR. Artificial water holes help alleviate the effects of artificial water shortage in the river, and because the location of the artificial water holes varies annually, the impact on the vegetation of aggregating herbivores around water holes was minimized. Water quality was comparable in natural and artificial water holes, and was the highest in holes dug by elephants in the sandy river bed.  相似文献

A field study was undertaken of the use of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) wetlands fringing Rubondo Island, Lake Victoria, Tanzania, as a refuge from predators by freshwater shrimps (Caridina nilotica) and tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) larvae. During the full moon nights, fish larvae took refuge more than 5 m in the papyrus and did not venture out into the lake, while they ventured into fringing lake waters during moonless nights. The freshwater shrimps and lake flies (Chaoborus sp.) did not migrate with the moon. This fauna took refuge in the papyrus wetlands even though the dissolved oxygen concentration was as low as 0.4 ppm (<5% of saturation).  相似文献
