Cannibalism is known to be a significant source of natural mortality of young North-east Arctic (NEA) cod. Cannibalism data, starting from 1984, have been used in NEA cod stock assessments since 1995, which has led to inconsistency in the cod abundance time series from 1946 to the present. To address this inconsistency, this study estimates the cannibalism-induced mortality (M2) of NEA cod at age 3–5 for the period 1946–1983. Combined qualitative and quantitative cod stomach content data for 1984–2010 were used to make the M2 estimations for age groups 3–5 (ICES 2014), then different factors including SSB were used to examine which covariates explained variability in M2 and thus make predictions for 1946–1983. The level of cannibalism was estimated to be high in the 1950s – early1960s. VPA-based assessment was run using these estimated M2 values. As a result, numbers of cod eaten by their conspecifics in the historical period and new increased recruitment estimates at age 3 were computed. The main factors affecting cannibalism appeared to be young cod abundance, total stock biomass (TSB) of large cod, and capelin total stock biomass (which represents an alternative prey). The problems involved in using the new recruitment time series in fishery management are discussed. In somatic hybrids between tumourous Nicotiana tabacum (B6S3) and normal mesophyll Atropa belladonna cells, the following traits, directly or indirectly connected with T-DNA gene expression and tumourous growth, were analysed: lysopine dehydrogenase activity (LpDH), shoot suppression, root suppression, ability to grow on media with D-lactose as a sole carbon source and resistance to 2-aminoethylcysteine, 5-bromodeoxyuridine and 5-methyltryptophan. SUP35is an omnipotent suppressor gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae coding for a protein consisting of a C-terminal part similar to the elongation factor EF-1α and a unique N-terminal sequence of 253 amino acids. Twelve truncated versions of the SUP35 gene were generated by the deletion of fragments internal to the coding sequence. Functional studies of these deletion mutants showed that: (i) only the EF-1α-like C-terminal part of the Sup35 protein is essential for the cell viability; (ii) overexpression of either the N-terminal part of the Sup35 protein or the full-length Sup35 protein decreases translational fidelity, resulting in omnipotent suppression and reduced growth of [psi+] strains; (iii) expression of the C-terminal part of the Sup35 protein generates an antisuppressor phenotype; and (iv) both the N- or C-terminal segments of the Sup35 protein can bind to 80S ribosomes. Traces of either ferrous or ferric salts greatly increase the rate of the stepwise degradation of reducing sugars by alkaline hydrogen peroxide, as measured by formation of formic acid; addition of larger proportions of iron salts causes relatively smaller effects. The results showed that, unless unusually strict precautions are taken to exclude traces of iron, the free-radical cleavage of the hydroperoxide adducts of reducing sugars is far more rapid than the ionic cleavage. The catalytic effect of iron salts is counteracted by addition of magnesium salts. With d-glucose, inhibition of the catalytic effect of iron by magnesium depends on both the magnesium-iron ratio and the concentration at a given ratio. Measurements with various molar proportions of the salts indicated that a magnesium-iron complex, containing six atoms of magnesium to one of iron, is formed. Presumably, removal of iron by formation of this complex inhibits the free-radical degradation of hydroperoxide adducts. In marked contrast to the results obtained with reducing sugars, the degradation of potassium glyoxylate and of glyoxal by alkaline hydrogen peroxide is extremely rapid, and not catalyzed by iron or inhibited by magnesium. The results are in accord with an ionic, rather than a free-radical, cleavage of the hydroperoxide adducts of these compounds. Despite the clear importance of language in our life, our vital ability to quickly and effectively learn new words and meanings is neurobiologically poorly understood. Conventional knowledge maintains that language learning—especially in adulthood—is slow and laborious. Furthermore, its structural basis remains unclear. Even though behavioural manifestations of learning are evident near instantly, previous neuroimaging work across a range of semantic categories has largely studied neural changes associated with months or years of practice. Here, we address rapid neuroanatomical plasticity accompanying new lexicon acquisition, specifically focussing on the learning of action-related language, which has been linked to the brain’s motor systems. Our results show that it is possible to measure and to externally modulate (using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of motor cortex) cortical microanatomic reorganisation after mere minutes of new word learning. Learning-induced microstructural changes, as measured by diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) and machine learning-based analysis, were evident in prefrontal, temporal, and parietal neocortical sites, likely reflecting integrative lexico-semantic processing and formation of new memory circuits immediately during the learning tasks. These results suggest a structural basis for the rapid neocortical word encoding mechanism and reveal the causally interactive relationship of modal and associative brain regions in supporting learning and word acquisition.This combined neuroimaging and brain stimulation study reveals rapid and distributed microstructural plasticity after a single immersive language learning session, demonstrating the causal relevance of the motor cortex in encoding the meaning of novel action words. 相似文献

Although 2D Ti3C2Tx is a good candidate for supercapacitors, the restacking of nanosheets hinders the ion transport significantly at high scan rates, especially under practical mass loading (>10 mg cm?2) and thickness (tens of microns). Here, Ti3C2Tx‐NbN hybrid film is designed by self‐assembling Ti3C2Tx with 2D arrays of NbN nanocrystals. Working as an interlayer spacer of Ti3C2Tx, NbN facilitates the ion penetration through its 2D porous structure; even at extremely high scan rates. The hybrid film shows a thickness‐independent rate performance (almost the same rate capabilities from 2 to 20 000 mV s?1) for 3 and 50 µm thick electrodes. Even a 109 µm thick Ti3C2Tx‐NbN electrode shows a better rate performance than 25 µm thick pure Ti3C2Tx electrodes. This method may pave a way to controlling ion transport in electrodes composed of 2D conductive materials, which have potential applications in high‐rate energy storage and beyond. 相似文献
