Lipase-catalyzed transamidation of non-activated amides in organic solvent

A novel biocatalytic reaction of transamidation of non-activated amides with amines is reported. Among 45 different lipolytic and proteolytic enzymes tested, only the lipase from Candida antarcticawas able to catalyze this reaction. The reaction proceeded with up to ca. 80% conversion in anhydrous methyl tert-butyl ether and worked with both N-substituted and unsubstituted amides. The biocatalytic transamidation is an equilibrium process and, therefore, higher conversions to the desired amide were achieved by using increased concentrations of the amine nucleophile.     

Climate Driven Life Histories: The Case of the Mediterranean Storm Petrel

Seabirds are affected by changes in the marine ecosystem. The influence of climatic factors on marine food webs can be reflected in long-term seabird population changes. We modelled the survival and recruitment of the Mediterranean storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus melitensis) using a 21-year mark-recapture dataset involving almost 5000 birds. We demonstrated a strong influence of prebreeding climatic conditions on recruitment age and of rainfall and breeding period conditions on juvenile survival. The results suggest that the juvenile survival rate of the Mediterranean subspecies may not be negatively affected by the predicted features of climate change, i.e., warmer summers and lower rainfall. Based on considerations of winter conditions in different parts of the Mediterranean, we were able to draw inferences about the wintering areas of the species for the first time.     

Degeneration of the laminated corpuscles (of Vater--Pacini) following colchicine application to a nerve]

Laminated pacinian corpuscles from the cat mesentery have been studied morphologically and morphometrically after nerve section and colchicine application to the nerve and the results obtained are represented. Similar interventions in the nerve produce changes in the receptors resembling those of wallerian type degeneration, degeneration rate after sectioning being higher than after colchicine application. At early stages after colchicine application the internal cone and its nuclei increase in size. The data obtained suggest the nuclei of the internal cone to be under neurotrophic control of the sensory neuron that might be realized via axoplasmic transport of substances.     

Pr-SNTX,a short-chain three-finger toxin from Papuan pigmy mulga snake,is an antagonist of muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α2βδε)

Three-finger toxins (3FTxs) are one of the major components in snake venoms. In this study, we isolated a cDNA encoding a short-chain 3FTx, Pr-SNTX, from Pseudechis rossignolii. The amino acid sequence of Pr-SNTX is nearly identical to that of its ortholog in Pseudechis australis. Pr-SNTX protein inhibited muscle-type (α₂βδε), but not neuronal α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) activity.     

Mitogenic action of substance P on the epithelial cells of the tongue

Substance P (10 and 100 ng/ml) stimulates the proliferation of basal cells from rat's tongue epithelium in primary cultures with 2.5% fetal calf serum. In serum-free medium substance P have no effect on the epithelial cell growth. This neuropeptide secreted by afferent nerve fibers of the tongue epithelium is suggested to have a neurotrophic influence on epithelial cells controlling their proliferation.     

Isolation and culture of protoplasts of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.)

Summary High yields of protoplasts were obtained from leaves of aseptically grown plants and calli originated from different explants, in several cultivars of Cajanus cajan L. The protoplasts divided to form cell clusters in modified KM 8p medium and developed to protocolonies after dilution with liquid Caboche's medium within three to four weeks of culture. The protocolonies proliferated to form green calli on solid Caboche's medium. Isolation and Sequencing of a Genomic Clone for Mouse Brain Specific Small RNA

We isolated a mouse genomic clone that hybridized with small RNA present in the cytoplasm of the brain. The RNA was about 150 nucleotides long. This RNA seemed to be specific to the brain, since it was not found in the liver or kidney. The clone DNA contained a sequence homologous to 82-nucleotide "identifier" core sequence of cDNA clones of rat. The sequence contained a split promoter for RNA polymerase III and was flanked by a 12-nucleotide direct repeat (ATAAATAATTTA).     

Enhancement of chloroplast energization in Chlorella by treatments inactivating the nitrate-reducing system

Inactivation of the nitrate-reducing system in whole cells of Chlorella vulgaris Bejerinck by darkening, nitrogen starvation, ammonium, or cycloheximide brings cells into a state with a high yield of the millisecond-delayed fluorescence of chlorophyll. Activation of this system by illumination, by adding glucose to dark-adapted cells or nitrate to nitrogen-starved cells brings the cells into a low-yield state. The transitions between the lowand high-yield state induced by alternating light and dark periods are suppressed by tungstate and restored by subsequent molybdate addition. The drop in the delayed-fluorescence yield upon activation of the nitrate-reducing system is associated with the decrease of the amplitude of the electrochemical proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast, as evidenced by the kinetics of the light-induced adsorption changes at 520 nm. The decrease of the proton gradient may be caused by the electron flow diverting from the cyclic path in photosystem I as a result of the activation of the electron transfer from ferredoxin to nitrite.Abbreviation DCMU 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea
