It was determined previously that unfed adults ofAmblyomma hebraeum become active in response to carbon dioxide but are not attracted by it. We have now shown in field experiments that males and females which are activated by carbon dioxide are attracted to the aggregation-attachment pheromone produced by males after a period of feeding on the host. Unfed adults were attracted too-nitrophenol, a component of the aggregation-attachment pheromone ofAmblyomma variegatum, pre-fed males ofA. hebraeum, and extracts of such males. Live males were more attractive than the extracts which, in turn, were more attractive thano-nitrophenol. The ticks were attracted to sources ofo-nitrophenol from as far away as 11 m in 90 min. Simple traps, baited with carbon dioxide and aggregation-attachment pheromone (from pre-fed males or extracts of pre-fed males), were used to capture unfed adults that had been released in the field. The response of unfed adults to carbon dioxide and the aggregation-attachment pheromone presents an obvious host-location mechanism and a means for the ticks to discriminate between suitable hosts (those with males already attached) and potentially unsuitable hosts (those with no males attached).  相似文献

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, the bacterium most widely used; in bioleaching or microbial desulfurization studies, was grown in an electrolytic bioreactor containing a synthetic, ferrous sulfate medium. Passage of current through the medium reduced the bacterially generated ferric iron to the ferrous iron substrate. When used in conjunction with an inoculum that had been adapted to the electrolytic growth conditions, this technique increased the protein (cell) concentration by 3.7 times, increased the protein (cell) production rate by 6.5 times, increased the yield coefficient (cellular efficiency) by 8.0 times, and increased the ferrous iron oxidation rate by 1.5 times at 29 degrees C, compared with conventional cultivation techniques. A Monod-type equation with accepted values for the maximum specific growth rate could not account for the increased growth rate under electrolytic conditions.  相似文献

Effect of human breast milk or its fractions on prostaglandin synthesis was investigated in cultured human skin fibroblasts. Prostaglandins released into the media were measured by radioimmunoassay. Incorporation of breast milk (2% level) into 10% fetal calf serum media (for 48 hours) stimulated the synthesis of 6-keto-PGF1 alpha (stable product of prostacyclin) by 800%. This stimulating effect of milk persisted after cold acetone extraction to remove phospholipids and potentiated further after dialysis. Stimulation by one of the commercial formulas (Similac) was less than 50% of the milk effect. Milk also stimulated PGE2 synthesis, although to a much lesser degree. These studies show for the first time that a) human breast milk contains potent factor(s) capable of influencing prostaglandin synthesis and suggest that b) these factors might have a role in the development of lipid synthetic pathways during early life.  相似文献

Changes in the activity of guinea pig liver cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase (rate limiting enzyme of cholesterol catabolism) from birth to adult life was investigated using a microsomal acetone extraction method (to remove endogenous cholesterol). Contrary to the previously held notion, it was noted that while the total bile acid pool increased progressively with age after birth, hepatic cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase specific activity declined. Neonatal hepatic cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase showed an increase in enzyme activity in response to cell supernatant factors (100,000 xg supernatant) from neonatal livers, but not from adult livers.  相似文献

Experimental diabetes in the rat has been shown to result in marked increases in bile acid pool and synthesis. In this study, mechanisms responsible for the increased bile acid synthesis was examined in rats made diabetic with streptozotocin. Our results indicate that a) in diabetic rats, hepatic cholesterol-7 alpha-hydroxylase activity is increased by 100%, b) this increased activity is not due to a higher stimulating activity of cell supernatant factors, but c) may be due to a non-lipoprotein factor(s) in diabetic serum capable of stimulating (by 100%) cholesterol-7 alpha-hydroxylase activity in control livers to the level noted in diabetic animals.  相似文献

The effect of neurotensin on submaximally-stimulated hepatobiliary and pancreatic secretion was studied in 6 healthy subjects. An intravenous infusion of neurotensin 1.4 ± 0.3 pmol/kg/min, designed to reproduce plasma neurotensin immunoreactivity levels within the physiological range, produced a significant increase in pancreatic bicarbonate output. Plasma concentrations of pancreatic polypeptide rose by 83 ± 16 pmol/l and were associated with a small reduction in trypsin, but no significant change in bilirubin outputs.  相似文献

Viral contamination associated with syncytium formation in two sbulines of Singh's Aedes albopictus cell cultures was investigated. Electron microscopy of the syncytia revealed the presence of five different types of virus-like particles, which morphologically resembled the parvo-, picorna-, toga-, and orbi-, and bacterial viruses. When a virus-free subline of the A. albopictus cells (SL3) was inoculated with extracts of the syncytium-forming A. albopictus cells, the parvo-, toga-, and orbi-type viral agents were consistently observed. Among these three agents, the togavirus-type agent is most likely responsible for the syncytium induction. Serological examination of the infected cell extract indicated that at least one of three virus-like agents, presumably the togavirus-type agent, was related to Chikungunya. O'nyong-nyong, and Western equine encephalomyelitis viruses (alphaviruses of the Togaviridae), but separable from these.  相似文献
