Abstract: Changes in the extracellular levels of excitatory and inhibitory amino acid transmitters were studied in the rat striatum during penumbral ischaemia using intracerebral microdialysis. Effects of penumbral forebrain ischaemia were compared with those of ischaemia with sustained anoxic depolarisation and K+ (100 m M ). Comparisons were also made between different groups of animals at 2 and 24 h after dialysis probe implantation. The K+ stimulus did not provoke any release of excitatory amino acids in the 24-h group, probably reflecting a decrease of functional synapses adjacent to the probe. During 30 min of penumbral ischaemia, excitatory amino acids did not reach critical concentrations in the extracellular fluid, and increases in levels of inhibitory/modulatory amino acids were similar. On the other hand, severe transient ischaemia resulted in massive synchronous release of many neuroactive excitatory and inhibitory compounds, in both the 2- and 24-h groups. These and other data suggest that changes during severe ischaemia may arise from both neurotransmitter and metabolic pools. It is concluded that is- chaemic damage in the penumbra may not be related to extracellular neuroactive amino acid changes generated within this region. 相似文献

The effects of various promoters in two-step carcinogenesis on the induction of histidine decarboxylase in the skin of mice was investigated. The potencies of various phorbol esters in inducing histidine decarboxylase activity were parallel with their tumor-promoting activities. Indole alkaloids such as dihydroteleocidin B and lyngbyatoxin A, which induced ornithine decarboxylase and promoted tumor development in the skin of mice with the same potency as 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), also induced histidine decarboxylase activity. These results suggest that histamine produced by this inducible histidine decarboxylase may play some role in tumor promotion. 相似文献

Larval competition between contest and scramble strategists was investigated using the two bruchid species, C. analis (contest species) and C. phaseoli (scramble species) with two different sized mung beans (large and small beans). In both sized beans, the adult emergences of each species dependen on total density of the initial larval densities of the two species and the ratio of the two densities. The emergence of one species was suppressed by the existence of the other species when the initial larval density per bean of the former species was less than that of the latter one. There were many cases in which both C. analis and C. phaseoli emerged from one bean in large beans, but such cases were quite rare in small beans. C. analis performed interference behavior only at late larval stages, whereas C. phaseoli was superior in exploitative competition all through their larval stages. These, combined with the niche segregation inside a bean, are throught to be the major factors of observed density- and frequency-dependent competition results. We present a global stability analysis of two-compartment models of a hierarchical cell production system with a nonlinear regulatory feedback loop. The models describe cell differentiation processes with the stem cell division rate or the self-renewal fraction regulated by the number of mature cells. The two-compartment systems constitute a basic version of the multicompartment models proposed recently by Marciniak-Czochra and collaborators [25] to investigate the dynamics of the hematopoietic system. Using global stability analysis, we compare different regulatory mechanisms. For both models, we show that there exists a unique positive equilibrium that is globally asymptotically stable if and only if the respective reproduction numbers exceed one. The proof is based on constructing Lyapunov functions, which are appropriate to handle the specific nonlinearities of the model. Additionally, we propose a new model to test biological hypothesis on the regulation of the fraction of differentiating cells. We show that such regulatory mechanism is incapable of maintaining homeostasis and leads to unbounded cell growth. Potential biological implications are discussed. 相似文献

Some patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) do not have honeycombing on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) at their initial evaluation. The clinical course and sequential changes in HRCT findings in these patients are not fully understood. We reviewed the cases of 43 patients with IPF without honeycombing on initial HRCT from institutions throughout Japan. All patients were diagnosed with IPF based on a surgical lung biopsy. Multidisciplinary discussions were held five times between 2011 and 2014, to exclude alternative etiologies. We evaluated the sequential changes in HRCT findings in 30 patients with IPF. We classified these 30 patients into three groups based on their HRCT patterns and clarified the clinical characteristics and prognosis among the groups. The patterns of all 30 patients on initial HRCT corresponded to a possible usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern which was described in the 2011 International Statement. On long-term follow-up (71.0±38.7 standard deviation [SD] months), honeycombing was seen in 16 patients (53%, the HoneyCo group); traction bronchiectasis or cysts without honeycombing was observed in 12 patients (40%, the NoHoneyCo group), and two patients showed no interval change (7%, the NoChange group) on HRCT. The mean survival periods of the HoneyCo and NoHoneyCo groups were 67.1 and 61.2 months, respectively (p = 0.76). There are some patients with IPF whose conditions chronically progress without honeycombing on HRCT. The appearance of honeycombing on HRCT during the follow-up might not be related to prognosis. 相似文献
