The advent of social media expands our ability to transmit information and connect with others instantly, which enables us to behave as “social sensors.” Here, we studied concurrent bursty behavior of Twitter users during major sporting events to determine their function as social sensors. We show that the degree of concurrent bursts in tweets (posts) and retweets (re-posts) works as a strong indicator of winning or losing a game. More specifically, our simple tweet analysis of Japanese professional baseball games in 2013 revealed that social sensors can immediately react to positive and negative events through bursts of tweets, but that positive events are more likely to induce a subsequent burst of retweets. We confirm that these findings also hold true for tweets related to Major League Baseball games in 2015. Furthermore, we demonstrate active interactions among social sensors by constructing retweet networks during a baseball game. The resulting networks commonly exhibited user clusters depending on the baseball team, with a scale-free connectedness that is indicative of a substantial difference in user popularity as an information source. While previous studies have mainly focused on bursts of tweets as a simple indicator of a real-world event, the temporal correlation between tweets and retweets implies unique aspects of social sensors, offering new insights into human behavior in a highly connected world.  相似文献

The previous study of the action of gramicidin S on bacteria (Katsu, T., Kobayashi, H. and Fujita, Y. (1986) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 860, 608-619) prompted us to investigate further the structure-activity relationship of the gramicidin S analogues on membrane permeability. Two types of the gramicidin S analogues were used in the present study: (1) cyclo(-X-D-Leu-D-Lys-D-Leu-L-Pro-)2, where X = Gly, D-Leu and D-cyclohexylalanine (D-cHxAla); (2) N,N'-diacetyl derivative of gramicidin S (diacetyl-gramicidin S) which lacks a cationic moiety of gramicidin S. All the analogues have a beta-sheet conformation as gramicidin S. The following cellular systems were used: Staphylococcus aureus as Gram-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli as Gram-negative bacteria, human erythrocytes, rat liver mitochondria and artificial liposomal membranes. It was found that gramicidin S and one of the type 1 analogues having X = D-cHxAla induced the efflux of K+ through the cytoplasmic membrane of all types of the cells. In addition, these two peptides had the ability to lower the phase transition temperature of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. Accordingly, it was concluded that, if peptides can expand greatly the membrane structure of neutral lipids which constitute main parts of the biological membrane, they can stimulate the permeability of cells without any selectivity. The action of the type 2 peptide, diacetyl-gramicidin S, was strongly cell dependent. Although this peptide stimulated the efflux of K+ from mitochondria, it did not do so efficiently, if at all, from S. aureus, E. coli and erythrocytes. In experiments using liposomes, diacetyl-gramicidin S increased markedly the permeability of liposomes composed of egg phosphatidylcholine. The presence of egg phosphatidylethanolamine or cholesterol reduced its activity. These results on liposomes explained well the low sensitivity of diacetyl-gramicidin S against E. coli and erythrocytes in terms of lipid constituents of the membranes. The mechanism of action of diacetyl-gramicidin S was discussed from the formation of a boundary lipid induced by this peptide.  相似文献

The action of gramicidin S and melittin on human erythrocytes, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was studied as an extension of the previous study (Katsu, T., Ninomiya, C., Kuroko, M., Kobayashi, H., Hirota, T. and Fujita, Y. (1988) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 939, 57-63). These amphipathic peptides stimulated the release of membrane phospholipids outside cells in a concentration range causing permeability change. The shape change of erythrocytes from normal discoid to spiculate form was observed just prior to the release of membrane components. We have proposed the following action mechanism of gramicidin S and melittin. The peptide molecules were predominantly accumulated in the outer half of the bilayer, deforming the erythrocyte cell into crenature. A large accumulation made the membrane structure unstable, resulting in the release of membrane fragments and the simultaneous enhancement of permeability. The action mechanism of these peptides was compared with that of simple surfactants.  相似文献

A pathogenic fungus of pea, Mycosphaerella pinodes, secretesa so-called "suppressor" in its pycnospore germination fluid.The suppressor blocks the defense responses and induces localsusceptibility (accessibility) in pea plants to agents thatare not pathogenic in pea. The suppressor nonspecifically inhibitsthe ATPase activity in plasma membranes prepared from pea, soybean,kidney bean, cowpea and barley plants. However, cytochemicalstudies by electron microscopy indicate that the suppressorspecifically inhibits the ATPase in pea cell membranes, butnot in those of four other plant species tested. That is, thespecificity of the suppressor appears at the cell and/or tissuelevel, but is not evident in vitro. Furthermore, the inhibitoryeffect of the suppressor is temporary because the ATPase activityrecovers 9 h after the treatment. A similar effect was observedafter inoculation with M. pinodes but not with a nonpathogenof pea, M. ligulicola. The role of the suppressor in host-parasitespecificity is discussed. Nongrowing Vibrio parahaemolyticus cells rapidly produced putrescine (Put) from added arginine when subjected to a low osmotic stress. This phenomenon was characterized in connection with a regulatory mechanism of the responsible enzymes, arginine decarboxylase (ADC) and agmatine ureohydrolase (AUH). NaCl, KCl, LiCl, sucrose, and glycerol were used as solutes to prepare the resuspending media with various osmolalities. Regardless of whether the solutes were electrolytes or non-electrolytes, exposure of cells to low osmolality brought about instantaneous increases in both intra- and extracellular Put contents without significant changes in the contents of other polyamines. This acceleration in Put production was accompanied by no increases in the specific activities of ADC and AUH. On the other hand, when cells were exposed to the osmolality equivalent to 2 or 5% NaCl, all solutes except for glycerol did not cause a remarkable variation in the intracellular Put content, while the amount of Put in the medium varied depending on the solute used; sucrose and glycerol still greatly prompted Put production, as judged by high Put contents in the media, even at the osmolality equivalent to 5% NaCl. The cation efflux from cells, measured as the K+ release, was observed whenever the increase in Put production occurred. Furthermore, in vitro experiments showed that NaCl and KCl inhibited ADC to a similar extent, about 70% inhibition being observed at 200 mM. However, AUH was not affected by these compounds. These results suggest that the reduction in the concentrations of Na+ and K+ predominantly present in cells may cause the increase in activity of the preexisting ADC, which leads to the enhancement of Put production.  相似文献

The interactions of benzoquinones with the reduced forms ofthe bound plastoquinone acceptors, QA and QB, were studied withoxygen-evolving photosystem II (PS II) particles from the thermophiliccyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus, which largely lack poolplastoquinone molecules [Takahashi and Katoh (1986) Biochim.Biophys. Acta 845: 183]. Oxygen evolution in the presence ofvarious electron acceptors was determined and flash-inducedchanges in absorbance in the blue region were analyzed in termsof difference spectra, dependence on the concentration of benzoquinoneand on temperature, and sensitivity to 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea(DCMU). The more hydrophobic the quinone molecule, the higherwas the rate of oxygen evolution, and the maximum rate of 3,000µmoles O2.(mg chlorophyll)–1.h–1 was recordedin the presence of phenyl- and dichloro-p-benzoquinones. DCMUinhibited oxygen evolution by more than 95%. However, spectrophotometricstudies revealed that, even though electrons were transferredto benzoquinones predominantly via the direct oxidation of by added benzoquinones occurred in such a way as to indicate thatabout 40% of PS II reaction centers were not associated withfunctional QB sites. was very stable in the presence of ferricyanide. Lentinan, a -1,6;1,3-glucan, is tumor-specific for transplantable mouse solid-type tumors and it also stimulates the production of acute phase proteins (APPs). The APP response to lentinan is of the delayed type (DT-APR) and differs from that to lipopolysaccharide, which is acute. We found that the responses were genetically controlled in mice and that low responsiveness is dominant (Maeda et al. 1991). Using 123 segregants of crosses between SWR/J (a high responder) andMus spretus (a low responder), we analyzed the linkage between DT-APR responsiveness and the DNA polymerase chain reaction-simple sequence lenght polymorphism (PCR-SSLP) phenotype using 80 chromosome-specific microsatellite markers. We identified two loci (ltn1.1 andltn1.2) responsible for DT-APR.ltn1.1 is closely linked toD3Mit11 on chromosome 3 andltn1.2 toD11Nds9 on chromosome 11 (P<0.001). The linkage analysis also suggested thatltn1.2 is the major determinant for DT-APR. Correlation between lentinan-specific IL-6 mRNA expression (the late expression) controlled recessively and DT-APR induction suggests that theltn1 loci control some process(es) of IL-6 expression in the regulation step before NF-IL6.  相似文献

The effects of a novel preservative for cut carnation flowers, 1,1-dimethyl-4-(phenylsulfonyl)semicarbazide (DPSS), were investigated. DPSS extended the vase life of cut carnation flowers not only by continuous treatment but pulse treatment as well. This inhibition of senescence by DPSS appeared to depend on that of ethylene production in carnation flowers. DPSS provided no protection from the action of ethylene nor did it inhibit 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase. It did inhibit ACC-dependent ethylene production in carnation petal discs, suggesting possible potential for inhibiting ACC oxidase.  相似文献
