Effect of pH on lead removal from water using tree fern as the sorbent   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

The sorption of lead from water onto an agricultural by-product, tree fern, was examined as a function of pH. The sorption processes were carried out using an agitated and baffled system. Pseudo-second-order kinetic analyses were performed to determine the rate constant of sorption, the equilibrium sorption capacity, and the initial sorption rate. Application of the pseudo-second-order kinetics model produced very high coefficients of determination. Results showed the efficiency of tree fern as a sorbent for lead. The optimum pH for lead removal was between 4 and 7, with pH 4.9 resulting in better lead removal. Ion exchange occurred in the initial reaction period. In addition, a relation between the change in the solution hydrogen ion concentration and equilibrium capacity was developed and is presented.  相似文献

DNA pooling approach is a cost-saving strategy which is crucial for multiple-SNP association study and particularly for laboratories with limited budget. However, the biased allele frequency estimates cannot be completely abolished by κ correction. Using the SNaPshot™, we systematically examined the relations between actual minor allele frequencies (AMiAFs) levels and estimates obtained from the pooling process for all six types of SNPs. We applied principle of polynomial standard curves method (PSCM) to produce allele frequency estimates in pooled DNA samples and compared it with the κ method. The results showed that estimates derived from the PSCM were in general closer to AMiAFs than those from the κ method, particularly for C/G and G/T polymorphisms at the range of AMiAF between 20–40%. We demonstrated that applying PSCM in the SNaPshot™ platform is suitable for multiple-SNP association study using pooling strategy, due to its cost effectiveness and estimation accuracy.  相似文献

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is a debilitating disease that commonly leads to destruction of the hip joint in adults. The etiology of ANFH is unknown, but previous studies have indicated that heritable thrombophilia (increased tendency to form thrombi) and hypofibrinolysis (reduced ability to lyse thrombi), alcohol intake, and steroid use are risk factors for ANFH. We recently identified two families with ANFH showing autosomal dominant inheritance. By applying linkage analysis to a four-generation pedigree, we excluded linkage between the family and three genes related to thrombophilia and hypofibrinolysis: protein C, protein S, and plasminogen activator inhibitor. Furthermore, by a genomewide scan, a significant two-point LOD score of 3.45 (recombination fraction [theta] = 0) was obtained between the family with ANFH and marker D12S85 on chromosome 12. High-resolution mapping was conducted in a second family with ANFH and replicated the linkage to D12S368 (pedigree I: LOD score 2.47, theta = 0.05; pedigree II: LOD score 2.81, theta = 0.10). When an age-dependent-penetrance model was applied, the combined multipoint LOD score was 6.43 between D12S1663 and D12S85. Thus, we mapped the candidate gene for autosomal dominant ANFH to a 15-cM region between D12S1663 and D12S1632 on chromosome 12q13.  相似文献

The sorption of three basic dyes, named basic violet 10, basic violet 1, and basic green 4, from aqueous solutions onto sugarcane dust was studied. The results revealed the potential of sugarcane dust, a waste material, to be a low-cost sorbent. Equilibrium isotherms were analyzed using the Langmuir, the Freundlich, and the three-parameter Redlich-Peterson isotherms. In order to determine the best-fit isotherm for each system, two error analysis methods were used to evaluate the data: the linear coefficient of determination and the Chi-square statistic test for determination of a non-linear model. Results indicated that the Chi-square test provided a better determination for the three sets of experimental data.  相似文献

Microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) has been better known for its well-defined role primarily in neurite outgrowth during neuronal development. However, the biological functions of MAP2 in non-neuronal cells, such as epithelial cells, remain largely unknown. In the present study, we sought to investigate the cellular functions of MAP2 by separately establishing stable expression of two MAP2 isoforms, MAP2A and MAP2C, in oral squamous cell carcinoma, Ca9-22. Ectopic expression of MAP2A or MAP2C results in microtubule bundling predominantly at the cell periphery. Remarkably, overexpression of MAP2A but not MAP2C significantly promotes migration of Ca9-22 cells, whereas knockdown of MAP2A expression by specific siRNA oligos dramatically decreases cell migration of HaCaT, an immortalized keratinocyte cell line with abundant endogenous MAP2A. Furthermore, by immunohistochemical studies, MAP2A was shown to highly and selectively express in invasive oral cancer tissues, consistent with its motility-promoting cellular function revealed through in vitro assays. Thus, our findings have not only identified a novel role of MAP2 in non-neuronal cells, but also provided the first implication of MAP2 in malignant oral cancer tissues.  相似文献

The motor protein kinesin superfamily proteins (KIFs) are involved in cancer progression. The depletion of one of the KIFs, KIF14, might delay the metaphase-to-anaphase transition, resulting in a binucleated status, which enhances tumor progression; however, the exact correlation between KIF14 and cancer progression remains ambiguous. In this study, using loss of heterozygosity and array comparative genomic hybridization analyses, we observed a 30% loss in the regions surrounding KIF14 on chromosome 1q in lung adenocarcinomas. In addition, the protein expression levels of KIF14 in 122 lung adenocarcinomas also indicated that approximately 30% of adenocarcinomas showed KIF14 down-regulation compared with the expression in the bronchial epithelial cells of adjacent normal counterparts. In addition, the reduced expression of KIF14 mRNA or proteins was correlated with poor overall survival (P = 0.0158 and <0.0001, respectively), and the protein levels were also inversely correlated with metastasis (P<0.0001). The overexpression of KIF14 in lung adenocarcinoma cells inhibited anchorage-independent growth in vitro and xenograft tumor growth in vivo. The overexpression and silencing of KIF14 also inhibited or enhanced cancer cell migration, invasion and adhesion to the extracellular matrix proteins laminin and collagen IV. Furthermore, we detected the adhesion molecules cadherin 11 (CDH11) and melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM) as cargo on KIF14. The overexpression and silencing of KIF14 enhanced or reduced the recruitment of CDH11 in the membrane fraction, suggesting that KIF14 might act through recruiting adhesion molecules to the cell membrane and modulating cell adhesive, migratory and invasive properties. Thus, KIF14 might inhibit tumor growth and cancer metastasis in lung adenocarcinomas.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of temperature on the equilibrium biosorption of methyl violet dye from aqueous solution using Mansonia wood sawdust was studied. The equilibrium biosorption data were analyzed using three widely applied isotherm models; Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich–Peterson isotherm. The fit of three linear Langmuir isotherm forms, the Freundlich isotherm, and the Redlich–Peterson isotherm were determined using linear and the non-linear methods. Langmuir isotherm parameters obtained from the three Langmuir linear equations by using linear method were dissimilar, except, when the non-linear method was used. Best fits were yielded with Langmuir and Redlich–Peterson isotherms. The methyl violet biosorption was strongly dependent solution pH and percentage dye removal became significant above pH 7, which was slightly higher than the pHPZC of the sawdust material. In addition, various thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° were calculated. Results suggested that the biosorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process.  相似文献
