The Gene Encoding Flavanone 3-Hydroxylase is Expressed Normally in the Pale Yellow Flowers of the Japanese Morning Glory Carrying the speckled Mutation Which Produce Neither Flavonol nor Anthocyanin but Accumulate Chalcone, Aurone and Flavanone

The Japanese morning glory carrying the recessive mutable speckledallele with the dominant speckled-activator bears colorlessflowers with fine and round colored spots distributed over thecorolla whereas the plant without the speckled-activator producespale yellow flowers. Previous chemical analysis has indicatedthat a mutation in the gene for flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H)is a likely candidate for the speckled allele. However, theF3HmRNA without sequence alteration accumulates normally inthe pale yellow flowers, indicating that the speckled alleleis neither the F3H gene nor a regulatory gene acting on theF3H gene expression. Corynebacterium equi IFO 3730 was found to oxidize a wide variety of sec-alcohols, including alkanols, substituted alkanols, alkenols and cyclic alcohols, in moderate to high yields. Among them, the sec-alcohols which have longer carbon chains were oxidized more smoothly than those with smaller numbers of carbon. Although both enantiomers of unsymmetrically disubstituted carbinols were oxidized, the S form of 2-dodecanol was converted to the corresponding ketone a little faster than the other enantiomer.

Social behaviour ofRopalidia revolutionalis (de Saussure) was observed in Brisbane and Townsville. Nests were, as a rule, founded by association of females. Each nest began as a single comb but, after the emergence of progeny adults, satellite combs were constructed near the original comb. During the pre-emergence (single-comb) stage, each colony had a single egg-layer, despite the rare occurrence of intranidal dominance acts among female wasps. When colonies had reached the multiple-comb stage, the frequency and intensity of intranidal dominance-aggressive acts rose to a high level, comparable to those of typically aggressive colonies of e.g.Polistes canadensis in Panama. Colonies appeared to be still functionally haplometrotic during the early phase of multiple-comb stage, but several potential egg-layers were present as colony size increased. Dominant females often performed wing vibration, rapid runs between combs and tended to sit on the largest comb, whilst subordinate females tended to sit on smaller combs.     

Formation of zeatin allylic phosphate by the microsomal fractions of bulb disks of Iris × hollandica Tub. and tubers of Helianthus tuberosus L.

It is shown that in bulbous Iris zeatin originates from a nucleotide. This nucleotide is probably zeatin-allylic-phosphate, in which a phosphate group is attached to the isoprenoid side-chain of zeatin. The formation of zeatin-allylic-phosphate from t-zeatin and 8-[¹⁴C]-zeatin by the microsomal fractions of Iris bulb disks and Helianthus tubers was demonstrated. The responsible enzyme was partially purified. 5-AMP was found to be a phosphate group delivering substrate. Adenosine and adenine inhibited the enzyme reaction. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to cytokinin biosynthesis and the occurrence of bud blast in Iris.     

The usefulness of CHAPS as a non-cytotoxic stabilizing agent in purification of growth factors

Among several detergents, a zwitterionic detergent, 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propane sulfonate (CHAPS), was found to be least cytotoxic for cultured mammalian cells. CHAPS improved the activity recovery and elution profile of crude and purified fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) during chromatographies. Diluted preparations of FGFs were stabilized by CHAPS against the loss during storage. Amino acid sequence analysis was not disturbed by CHAPS. CHAPS was removable by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. FMRFamide modulates the action of phase shifting agents on the ocular circadian pacemakers of Aplysia and Bulla

Summary The eye of the marine mollusk Aplysia californica contains a photo-entrainable circadian pacemaker that drives an overt circadian rhythm of spontaneous compound action potentials in the optic nerve. Both light and serotonin are known to influence the phase of this ocular rhythm. The current study evaluated the effect of FMRFamide on both light and serotonin induced phase shifts of this rhythm. The application of FMRFamide was found to block serotonin induced phase shifts but, by itself, FMRFamide did not cause significant phase shifts. Furthermore, the effects of FMRFamide on light-induced phase shifts appeared to be phase dependent (i.e., the application of FMRFamide inhibited light-induced phase delays but actually enhanced the magnitude of phase advances). As in Aplysia, the eye of Bulla gouldiana also contains a circadian pacemaker. In Bulla, FMRFamide prevented light-induced phase advances and delays. Although FMRFamide alone generated phase dependent phase shifts, it did not cause phase shifts at the phases where it blocked the effects of light.
