SOCIAL SELECTION AND THE EVOLUTION OF ANIMAL SIGNALS

Social selection is presented here as a parallel theory to sexual selection and is defined as a selective force that occurs when individuals change their own social behaviors, responding to signals sent by conspecifics in a way to influence the other individuals' fitness. I analyze the joint evolution of a social signal and behavioral responsiveness to the signal by a quantitative-genetic model. The equilibria of average phenotypes maintained by a balance of social selection and natural selection and their stability are examined for two alternative assumptions on behavioral responsiveness, neutral and adaptive. When behavioral responsiveness is neutral on fitness, a rapid evolution by runaway selection occurs only with enough genetic covariance between the signal and responsiveness. The condition for rapid evolution also depends on natural selection and the number of interacting individuals. When signals convey some information on signalers (e.g., fighting ability), behavioral responsiveness is adaptive such that a receiver's fitness is also influenced by the signal. Here there is a single point of equilibrium. The equilibrium point and its stability do not depend on the genetic correlation. The condition needed for evolution is that the signal is beneficial for receivers, which results from reliability of the signal. Frequency-dependent selection on responsiveness has almost no influence on the equilibrium and the rate of evolution.     

Quantitative structure-activity relationships of structurally similar odorless and odoriferous benzenoid musks

To reveal the difference of molecular property between structurallysimilar odorless and odoriferous musk compounds, 10 pairs ofbenzenoids (monocyclic-, dicyclic- and tricyclic-) were examined.Molecular structures of all compounds were optimized by MNDO(modified neglect of diatomic differential overlap) consideringconformation. Parameters effective in discriminating two groups,group A of 10 odorless compounds and group B of 10 musk odorcompounds, were searched from 34 candidate parameters by adaptiveleast squares. The best three parameters found were log P value(octanol/water partition coefficient), the longest side lengthof hexahedron circumscribing a molecule, and the parameter whichexpresses structural hindrance to the functional group whena molecule approaches the receptor site. The two groups of compoundswere completely discriminated using these three parameters.     

Production of d-Aminoacylase from Alcaligenes denitrificans subsp. xylosoxydans MI-4

A bacterial strain that produces d-aminoacylase was isolated from soil and identified as Alcaligenes denitrificans subsp. xylosoxydans MI-4. l-Aminoacylase activity in this strain was only 1 to 2% of d-aminoacylase activity. d-Aminoacylase was inducibly produced. N-Acetyl-dl-leucine was the best inducer, and the d-isomer had the ability to induce the enzyme. Enzymatic resolution of N-acetyl-dl-methionine with the crude enzyme was carried out, and the d/l ratio in the resolved methionine was approximately 100/7, suggesting that resolution with crude enzymes may become possible by removing small amounts of the contaminated l-form with l-amino acid oxidase.     

Purification and Characterization of Sucrose Synthase from Peach (Prunus persica) Fruit

Sucrose synthase (EC 2.4.1.13 [EC] ) was purified from peach fruit(Prunus persica) to a single band of protein on SDS-PAGE byammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-cellulose (DE-52) chromatography,Sepharose CL-6B gel filtration, PBA-60 affinity chromatographyand Sephadex G-200 gel filtration. The molecular weight wasestimated to be 360,000 by gel filtration. The enzyme was foundto be a tetramer of identical 87-kDa subunits. The maximum activityfor the synthesis and cleavage of sucrose was observed at pH8.5 and pH 7.0, respectively. The enzymatic reaction followedtypical Michaelis-Menten kinetics in both directions, with thefollowing parameters: K_m(fructose), 4.8 mmM; K_m(UDPglucose),0.033 mM; K_m(sucrose), 62.5 mM; K_m(UDP), 0.080 mM. Other properties,such as substrate specificity and the effects of divalent cations,were also investigated. The relationship between the enzymeand the accumulation of sucrose in peach fruit is discussed. Effect of retinyl palmitate and 13-cis retinoic acid on immune functions in immunodeficient, nude mice

Nude mice are deficient in thymus gland development and hence lacking functional, mature T-lymphocytes. Weanling nude mice were given various deficient and high retinyl palmitate (RP) or 13-cis retinoic acid (CRA) diets. The high RP (vitamin A) diets stimulated phagocytosis in the absence of mature T-helper cells. However, T-cell dependent mitogens did not cause significant mitogenesis in any group, while LPS, a B-cell mitogen, did. RP had no effect on mitogenesis. NK cell activity was increased only at a very high level of RP, as has been reported with conventional mice. Macrophage production of cytotoxic factors was unaffected by high levels of RP or CRA. Direct cytotoxicity in vitro of tumor cells was increased only at very high RP levels. Thus, mature T cells may be needed for RP to produce normal activation of macrophage, except at very high RP levels.     

Increased plasma level of endothelin with vasoconstriction after dextran infusion.

Our previous study demonstrated that volume expansion with dextran produced blood pressure elevation due to vasoconstriction 3 hours after the cessation of infusion. To examine whether endogenous endothelin contributes to this vasoconstriction, we measured plasma level of endothelin before, immediately after, and 3 hours after the administration of dextran. Plasma level of endothelin decreased immediately after the administration (from 1.5 +/- 0.3 pg/ml to 1.1 +/- 0.2 pg/ml, P less than 0.05), and increased 3 hours after the administration (2.1 +/- 0.3 pg/ml, P less than 0.05). However, the changes in the plasma level of endothelin did not significantly correlated with those in blood pressure or total peripheral resistance. Thus, vasoconstriction after dextran infusion was accompanied by an increase in the plasma level of endothelin, but further evaluation is needed for the direct role of this peptide in the vasoconstrictive blood pressure elevation.     

Simple and rapid quantitative assay of C-labelled urea in human serum using liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry

A simple and rapid quantitative method for ¹³C-labelled urea ([¹³C]urea) in human serum was developed by using high-performance liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-APCI-MS). This method is used to establish and normalize the [¹³C]urea breath test, which is considered as an effective diagnostic method for Helicobacter pylori infection. HPLC-APCI-MS, involving a simple pretreatment process such as diluting serum with water, was shown to be able to discriminate the extrinsic [¹³C]urea from intrinsic urea present at high concentration in serum. In addition, a ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic quantitative method for [¹³C]urea in human urine is also described. The precision and accuracy of measured concentrations in these two methods were found to be within the acceptable limit. An application of these methods to investigate the pharmacokinetic profile of orally administered [¹³C]urea in human serum and urine is also presented.     

Efficient production of IGG human monoclonal antibodies by lymphocytes stimulated by lipopolysaccharide,pokeweed mitogen,and interleukin 4

Summary Extensive screening of the mitogens lipopolysaccharide (LPS), pokeweed mitogen (PWM), andStaphylococcus aureus Cowan I (SAC I), alone and in combination and with and without interleukin (IL) was performed forin vitro activation of regional lymph node lymphocytes from lung cancer patients for the production of human IgG, IgM, and IgA. As assessed by electrofusion of the lymphocytes following their exposure to these agents with mouse myeloma cells and incubation of the fused hybridoma, a remarkable stimulatory effect was shown by LPS and particularly by LPS plus IL-4, which was substantially greater than that of either SAC I or PWM with or without various IL. Optimization studies indicated that the addition of PWM to LPS and IL-4 in the culture medium further stimulated the human antibody (Ab) production, and that the optimal formulation for stimulations of human IgG production was a culture medium containing 20 μg/ml of LPS, 1/500 of PWM, and 100 u/ml of IL-4.     

The use of arteriovenous anastomosis for replantation of the distal phalanx of the fingers.

Microvascular replantation at the distal phalangeal level has recently been reported by several authors, but as yet the rate of success has not been constant owing to the technical difficulties associated with small vessels. To solve this problem, over the last 4 years we have used arteriovenous anastomosis to reestablish either the arterial system or the venous drainage system in the 33 digits of our 23 patients. The results have been excellent, with a 91 percent success rate. Such results for replantation of the distal phalanx may be maintained and improved if a small venous graft with several branches is also utilized.
