In Japan, herpangina cases increase every summer with an incidence peak in July. During the past eight years from January, 1982 to December, 1989, a total of 3,974 viruses from herpangina cases were reported from 47 participating laboratories, and coxsackie A (CA) viruses accounted for most of them, 3,055 (76.9%). The major types associated with herpangina were, in order of frequency, CA4, 10, 5, 6, 2 and 3, representing 87.2%-80.8% of total isolations reported for each respective type in this period. Eighty-four point four percent of the total virus isolations were from children at four years of age or younger. More than 80% of total CA virus isolations were from nasopharyngeal specimens and nearly 90% of the viruses were isolated in mice.  相似文献

This report presents an overall distribution of poliovirus isolations in Japan, where poliomyelitis has been under control over two decades as a result of legal administration of two doses of the trivalent live oral poliovirus vaccine of the Sabin strains (OPV) to children under 48 months of age. During the past 12 years from 1980 through 1991, a total of 1,126 poliovirus isolations from humans and 268 isolations from sewage/river water were reported by respectively 49 and nine of the participating laboratories. Type 2 was most frequently isolated from children after administration of one dose of OPV, followed by type 1 and type 3. On the contrary, after the second dose of OPV, the rate of isolation of type 3 exceeded those of type 2 and type 1. Seasonal and age distribution of poliovirus isolations from both humans and sewage/river water paralleled the OPV vaccination schedule in Japan. One percent of the isolations were, however, from infants younger than the vaccination-scheduled ages and 5% were from children older than those ages, including one each from 15 and 16 years olds. The data indicate that the poliovirus has silently been disseminated from vaccinated children to others and the community, thus suggesting repeated transmission of the viruses. The fact that some elder children had poliovirus colonization in their alimentary tracts indicates a potential risk of infection of such a population when exposed to a wild virus and of becoming a source of transmission to others.  相似文献

Laboratory reports of isolation of echovirus serotype 18 (E18) slightly increased in the summer of 1987 followed by a sharp increase with a peak in July, 1988. A total of 1,094 isolations were reported during these two years from 39 laboratories participating in the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Agents in Japan. When compared with the previous E18 outbreaks, a higher proportion of children at two years of age or under (58.3%) and a much higher incidence of exanthem (46.4%) were remarkable. Meningitis-associated isolations were reported in 30.6%, less than half of the percentage of the previous epidemic.  相似文献

The program of the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Welfare started in 1981 apprehended in 1995 emergence of adenovirus type 7 in Japan. We analyzed the reported data of type 7 comparing with those of type 3, both belonging to the same subgenus B, and the following results were obtained: After 1981, the main serotypes in the reports of adenovirus isolation/detection were types 3, 2, and 1 in this order. The reports of isolation of adenovirus type 7 used to be extremely few, however, suddenly increased in 1995. In 1997, reports of isolation of adenovirus type 3 decreased and those of type 7 acquired the third place after those of types 2 and 3. Type 7 infection occur almost every month, but most frequently during May-September. The ages of cases from which type 7 was isolated were 0-4 years accounting for 55%, 5-9 years 35%, teens 6.3% and adults 4.0%, being similar proportions to those yielding type 3. Clinical diagnoses of cases yielding adenovirus type 7 were pharyngo-conjunctival fever (PCF) and influenza-like illness, these two accounting for half. The symptoms were severe, being characterized by higher maximum body temperature during the feverish period and severe pneumonia. Encephalitis and arthro-muscular pain were seen in only type 7-infected cases, although such cases were few.  相似文献

Thorotrast is a colloidal suspension of radioactive (232)ThO(2) that naturally emits alpha particles (90%), beta particles and gamma rays (10%). Thorotrast was used as a radiographic contrast agent in the 1930s-1950s; it caused liver cancer several decades after injection because of its life-long deposition and exposure. Determination of the amount and the distribution of radioactive thorium are essential for assessment of radiation risks. We visualized alpha particles on ordinary archival tissue sections using an imaging plate and a BAS5000 image analyzer. Furthermore, we confirmed that the imaging system is sensitive enough to detect alpha particles and accurate in measuring the total amount of thorium deposited in the organ from a single tissue section. This method revealed that the amount of thorium deposited in tumor tissue is correlated to that in non-tumor tissue. Thorotrast deposition was not associated with DNA damage determined by histochemistry. In combination with histological findings, it is suggested that radioactive thorium always migrates within the deposited organs by macrophages, and that the organs are evenly exposed to alpha particles.  相似文献

The components involved in the formation of protocyanin, a stable blue complex pigment from the blue cornflower, Centaurea cyanus, were investigated. Reconstruction experiments using highly purified anthocyanin [centaurocyanin, cyanidin 3-O-(6-O-succinylglucoside)-5-O-glucoside], flavone glycoside [apigenin 7-O-glucuronide-4'-O-(6-O-malonylglucoside)] and metals, Fe and Mg, showed the presence of another factor essential for the formation of protocyanin. The unknown factor was revealed to be Ca. Reconstructed protocyanin using anthocyanin, flavone, Fe, Mg, and Ca was identical with protocyanin from nature in UV-Vis and CD spectra, and was isolated as crystals for the first time. Escitalopram has been shown to be effective for treating major depression (MDD); however, research is lacking regarding its effect on treating MDD-related sleep impairments. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of escitalopram monotherapy and investigate changes in insomnia, depressive symptoms, and quality of life (QOL). Participants were 14 patients with MDD who enrolled in a clinical trial at Jikei University Katsushika Medical Center. Escitalopram monotherapy was used, and hypnotics were administered three times per week for individuals suffering from sleep impairments. The following variables were assessed: (1) sleep quality [Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI)], (2) depression [Zung self-rating depression scale (ZSRDS)], and (3) quality of life (QOL) as determined by the Sheehan disability scale (SDISS) and short form (36) health survey (SF-36). These assessments were conducted prior to any treatment (pre-test) and again 8–12 weeks after treatment (post-test). Monotherapy (E = escitalopram alone; n = 6) and combination therapy (E+ = escitalopram + zolpidem; n = 8) groups were compared. All participants completed the full protocol (average 9.4 ± 1.8 weeks). Regardless of treatment group, participants improved on all assessments (including sleep impairment). However, groups did not differ in their level of improvement. A two-factor ANOVA revealed that the E+ group showed particular improvements in QOL. In treating MDD and associated sleep impairments, zolpidem did not confer additional benefits. Thus, clinicians should consider E monotherapy for patients with MDD-related sleep impairments before prescribing combination therapies.

Serum amyloid A protein (SAA), an acute-phase reactant in reactive amyloidosis, has high affinity for high-density lipoprotein (HDL). When SAA is added to HDL, SAA displaces apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) and phospholipid from the HDL particles. These dissociated components may form prebeta1-HDL because free apoA-I can associate with phospholipid to become a lipoprotein having prebeta mobility. To determine whether SAA generates prebeta1-HDL from alpha-migrating HDL, we investigated the effects of recombinant SAA on HDL subfraction concentration using nondenaturing two-dimensional gradient gel electrophoresis. When we added SAA (0.5 mg/mL) to plasma, the prebeta1-HDL concentration increased by 164% (from 4.7% +/- 1.3% to 12.4% +/- 3.2% of apoA-I, p < 0.005). The increase in prebeta1-HDL was proportional to the dose of SAA. When we added SAA to a column of Sepharose beads coupled to the isolated HDL (alpha-migrating HDL), prebeta1-HDL was dissociated from the column together with the SAA-associated HDL. In summary, we demonstrate that SAA generates prebeta1-HDL from alpha-migrating HDL. We speculate that SAA-mediated HDL remodeling may take place in inflammation.  相似文献
