OBJECTIVE: To describe a low-cost Papanicolaou staining procedure that can be applied to conventional and monolayer gynecologic preparations. STUDY DESIGN: The amount of alcohol consumed in the procedure, which normally accounts for > 80% of the cost of processing, was reduced drastically by (1) using only 1 modified cytoplasmic counterstain (EA type), thereby (2) reducing the number of alcohol rinses by over half Orange-G dye is omitted. RESULTS: The resultant effect of the modified staining protocol is quite satisfactory and attractive to screening eyes: nuclear details are sharp and crisp, while the cytoplasm contains transparent differential staining with blue-green and pink. CONCLUSION: A reduction in the cost of staining should encourage cervical cancer screening, especially in developing countries, where cost is a limiting factor, thus making it possible for more women to be screened without increasing the cost of the program.  相似文献

Background and aims

Limited information is available on how cadmium (Cd) applied in phosphate fertilizer interacts with soil and environmental conditions over time to affect crop Cd concentrations.

Methods

Field studies from 2002 to 2009 at seven locations evaluated the cumulative effects of P fertilizer rate and Cd concentration on seed Cd concentration of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L.) and flax (Linum usitatissiumum L.).

Results

Soil characteristics and environment affected Cd availability. Durum wheat grain Cd increased with P fertilizer rate but effect on flaxseed Cd concentration was smaller. Cadmium concentration in fertilizer had a greater effect on flaxseed than durum wheat Cd concentration. Seed Cd concentration of both crops was greatest with the highest rate P fertilizer containing the highest Cd concentration. There was not a strong cumulative effect of fertilization over the 8 years of the study, indicating attenuation of Cd availability over time.

Conclusions

Cadmium in phosphate fertilizer increases Cd available for crop uptake, but crop Cd concentration is also affected by soil characteristics and annual environmental conditions. Type of crop produced and soil and environmental characteristics that affect phytoavailability must be taken into account when assessing the Cd risk from P fertilization.  相似文献

Antibacterial behavior of chitosan-bivalent metal chelates (Co and Ni) was investigated in vitro against standard bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 4533, S. faecalis ATCC 8043 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25923. The chitosan-metal chelates were prepared by varying the molar ratio of metal ions to a fixed amount of chitosan. The metal ion contents, structural properties and morphology of the chelates were respectively determined using ICP-OES, FT-IR and SEM. All the chitosan-metal chelates showed wide spectrum of effective antibacterial activities better than free chitosan and the individual metal ions. The results indicated that inhibitory effects of the chelates were dependent not only on the property of the coordinated metal ion, but also on the molar ratio of the metal ion. Consequently, the ideal inhibitory effects could be obtained with metal ion of high charge intensity and when the molar ratio of chitosan to metal was above 1:1. These chelates are promising materials for novel antibacterial agents.  相似文献

  • Improvements in HIV service delivery are key to bringing countries closer to achieving the target of ending AIDS as a public health threat and situating HIV treatment and care as part of universal healthcare coverage.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) guideline development process is recognized as one approach to identifying research gaps. Systematic reviews form the basis of recommendations formulated by an expert guideline development group, which is also tasked to identify research gaps.
  • The 2021 WHO HIV Service Delivery Guideline process identified 27 research gaps grouped into 8 areas where more research is needed to support enhancement and implementation of the new recommendations across the cascade of care.
  • Areas covered by the WHO Service Delivery Guideline include antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation outside the health facility, frequency of visits/refills, tracing and reengagement in care, assessing adherence, integration of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services, integration of HIV and diabetes and hypertension care, psychosocial interventions for adolescents, and task sharing of specimen collection and point-of-care testing.
  • Key areas identified by the guideline process that could benefit from future research include tools to support ART initiation outside the health facility, outcomes of spacing of clinical visits/drug refills beyond 6 months, tailored support to minimize disengagement and support reengagement along the continuum of care, and accurate, feasible measures of adherence.
  • Strategies of integration of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services and hypertension and diabetes care, costs and cost-effectiveness of psychological support interventions, the performance of newer point-of-care technologies by nonlaboratory personnel, and the impact of diagnostic integration across disease types were also identified as key areas that would benefit from future research.
