The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a disorder of sleep and breathing that is being recognized with increasing frequency. The pathophysiologic consequences range from mild sleepiness to life-threatening cardiovascular and respiratory decompensation. The primary forms of treatment are directed at modifying the upper airway with either an operation or continuous positive airway pressure. Aside from tracheostomy, which is virtually always successful, other forms of treatment have met with varying results. Ancillary therapy, including oxygen, weight loss and drugs, is often helpful but seldom curative. Follow-up sleep studies are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Selecting therapy for a patient with obstructive sleep apnea requires a comprehensive evaluation including polysomnography, special examinations of the upper airway and assessing the cardiopulmonary status. Therapy is based on the severity of disease and must be tailored to each patient. 相似文献

Group I introns are proposed to have become mobile following the
acquisition of open reading frames (ORFs) that encode highly specific DNA
endonucleases. This proposal implies that intron ORFs could behave as
autonomously mobile entities. This was supported by abundant circumstantial
evidence but no experiment of ORF transfer from an ORF- containing intron
to its ORF-less counterpart has been described. In this paper we present
such experiments, which demonstrate the efficient mobility of the
mitochondrial nad1-i4-orf1 between two Podospora strains. The homing of
this mobile ORF was accompanied by a bidirectional co-conversion that did
not systematically involve the whole intron sequence. Orf1 acquisition
would be the most recent step in the evolution of the nad1-i4 intron, which
has resulted in many strains of Podospora having an intron with two ORFs
(biorfic) and four splicing pathways. We show that two of the splicing
events that operate in this biorfic intron, as evidenced by PCR
experiments, are generated by a 5'-alternative splice site, which is most
probably a remnant of the monoorfic ancestral form of the intron. We
propose a sequential evolution model that is consistent with the four
organizations of the corresponding nad1 locus that we found among various
species of the Pyrenomycete family; these organizations consist of no
intron, an intron alone, a monoorfic intron, and a biorfic intron.

We assessed North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica) seasonal and daily calling patterns in the southeastern Bering Sea (SEBS) using long‐term hydrophone recordings from October 2000 through January 2006. We detected right whale calls on the SEBS middle shelf (<100 m depth) as early as May, intermittently throughout summer and fall, and as late as December. Calls also were detected on one day in June 2005 on the SEBS slope (>1,000 m), but were not detected near Kodiak Island from April to August 2003. In months with calls, detections occurred on more days in July–October (≥6 d/mo), than from May to June or November to December (≤3 d/mo). Calls were clustered in time and were usually detected on 1–3 consecutive days with a median interval of 6.5 d for calls >1 d apart. Hourly calling rates were significantly higher at night than during the day. These data indicate that right whales occur in the SEBS later in the year than previously known, intermittently pass through the middle‐shelf study region, and usually remain there no longer than a few days. Right whale habitat use in the SEBS may intensify in mid‐summer through early fall based on higher monthly and daily call detection rates. 相似文献

Bacterial cells display both spatial and temporal organization, and this complex structure is known to play a central role in cellular function. Although nearly one‐fifth of all proteins in Escherichia coli localize to specific subcellular locations, fundamental questions remain about how cellular‐scale structure is encoded at the level of molecular‐scale interactions. One significant limitation to our understanding is that the localization behavior of only a small subset of proteins has been characterized in detail. As an essential step toward a global model of protein localization in bacteria, we capture and quantitatively analyze spatial and temporal protein localization patterns throughout the cell cycle for nearly every protein in E. coli that exhibits nondiffuse localization. This genome‐scale analysis reveals significant complexity in patterning, notably in the behavior of DNA‐binding proteins. Complete cell‐cycle imaging also facilitates analysis of protein partitioning to daughter cells at division, revealing a broad and robust assortment of asymmetric partitioning behaviors. 相似文献

Bacteriophage 80 alpha did not increase in number in cultures containing less than about 1.0 X 10(4) to 1.5 X 10(4) CFU of Staphylococcus aureus per ml, but bacteriophage replication did occur when the number of bacteria exceeded this density, either initially or as a result of host cell multiplication. The minimum density of an asporogenous strain of Bacillus subtilis required for an increase in the number of bacteriophage SP beta cI was about 3 X 10(4) CFU/ml. The threshold density of Escherichia coli for the multiplication of bacteriophage T4 was about 7 X 10(3) CFU/ml. In the presence of montmorillonite, bacteriophage T4 did not increase in number until the E. coli population exceeded 10(4) CFU/ml. The mineralization of glucose was not affected in E. coli cultures inoculated with a low number of bacteriophage T4, but it could not be detected in cultures inoculated with a large number of phage. The numbers of bacteriophage T4 and a bacteriophage that lyses Pseudomonas putida declined rapidly after being added to lake water or sewage. We suggest that bacteriophages do not affect the number or activity of bacteria in environments where the density of the host species is below the host cell threshold of about 10(4) CFU/ml. 相似文献

A study was conducted of possible reasons for acclimation of microbial communities to the mineralization of organic compounds in lake water and sewage. The acclimation period for the mineralization of 2 ng of p-nitrophenol (PNP) or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid per ml of sewage was eliminated when the sewage was incubated for 9 or 16 days, respectively, with no added substrate. The acclimation period for the mineralization of 2 ng but not 200 ng or 2 micrograms of PNP per ml was eliminated when the compound was added to lake water that had been first incubated in the laboratory. Mineralization of PNP by Flavobacterium sp. was detected within 7 h at concentrations of 20 ng/ml to 2 micrograms/ml but only after 25 h at 2 ng/ml. PNP-utilizing organisms began to multiply logarithmically after 1 day in lake water amended with 2 micrograms of PNP per ml, but substrate disappearance was only detected at 8 days, at which time the numbers were approaching 10(5) cells per ml. The addition of inorganic nutrients reduced the length of the acclimation period from 6 to 3 days in sewage and from 6 days to 1 day in lake water. The prior degradation of natural organic materials in the sewage and lake water had no effect on the acclimation period for the mineralization of PNP, and naturally occurring inhibitors that might delay the mineralization were not present. The length of the acclimation phase for the mineralization of 2 ng of PNP per ml was shortened when the protozoa in sewage were suppressed by eucaryotic inhibitors, but it was unaffected or increased if the inhibitors were added to lake water.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Rice plants fed on by fall armyworm ( Spodoptera frugiperda , FAW) caterpillars emit a blend of volatiles dominated by terpenoids. These volatiles were highly attractive to females of the parasitoid Cotesia marginiventris . Microarray analysis identified 196 rice genes whose expression was significantly upregulated by FAW feeding, 18 of which encode metabolic enzymes potentially involved in volatile biosynthesis. Significant induction of expression of seven of the 11 terpene synthase ( TPS ) genes identified through the microarray experiments was confirmd using real-time RT-PCR. Enzymes encoded by three TPS genes, Os02g02930, Os08g07100 and Os08g04500, were biochemically characterized. Os02g02930 was found to encode a monoterpene synthase producing the single product S- linalool, which is the most abundant volatile emitted from FAW-damaged rice plants. Both Os08g07100 and Os08g04500 were found to encode sesquiterpene synthases, each producing multiple products. These three enzymes are responsible for production of the majority of the terpenes released from FAW-damaged rice plants. In addition to TPS genes, several key genes in the upstream terpenoid pathways were also found to be upregulated by FAW feeding. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of FAW-induced volatiles and the corresponding volatile biosynthetic genes potentially involved in indirect defense in rice. Evolution of the genetic basis governing volatile terpenoid biosynthesis for indirect defense is discussed. 相似文献

The indehiscent fruitlets of the apparently basalmost extant angiosperm, Amborella trichopoda, have a pericarp that is differentiated into five zones, a thin one‐cell‐layered skin (exocarp), a thick fleshy zone of 25–35 cell layers (outer mesocarp), a thick, large‐celled sclerenchymatous zone (unlignified) of 6–18 cell layers (middle mesocarp), a single cell layer with thin‐walled (silicified?) cells (inner mesocarp), and a 2–4‐cell‐layered, small‐celled sclerenchymatous zone (unlignified) derived from the inner epidermis (endocarp). The border between inner and outer mesocarp is not even but the inner mesocarp forms a network of ridges and pits; the ridges support the vascular bundles, which are situated in the outer mesocarp. In accordance with previous observations by Bailey & Swamy, no ethereal oil cells were observed in the pericarp; however, lysigenous cavities as mentioned by these authors are also lacking; they seem to be an artefact caused by re‐expanding dried fruits. The seed coat is not sclerified. Metabolic and ventilatory variables were measured in a large semifossorial marsupial, the hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons, 21.9 kg). In normoxia, the rate of oxygen consumption was 63% of that predicted for a similar-sized marsupial, and the level of ventilation (V(E)) was such that the convective requirement (V(E)/VO2) was similar to other mammals. Exposure to hypercapnia (5% CO(2)) evoked a hyperventilatory response (3.55 x normoxia) that was no different to that observed for epigeal (surface-dwelling) marsupials; the increase in V(E) was primarily achieved with an increase in tidal volume. Exposure to hypoxia (15% to 8% O(2)) resulted in a hyperventilation (principally through an increase in frequency), although the response was blunted (in 8% O(2), 1.85 x normoxia) and only at the severest levels did hypometabolism contribute. The attenuated response to hypoxia in the wombat is presumably a reflection of a semifossorial lifestyle and a tolerance to this respiratory stimulant. 相似文献

DNA content and p53 protein expression in ductal breast cancer
The DNA content of 85 ductal breast cancers of different histological grades was evaluated using static cytometry and correlated with immunocytochemical expression of p53 protein in tumour cells in cytological material. A statistically significant difference was observed between p53 protein expression and grade of malignancy ( P <0.001). The percentage of euploid tumours significantly decreased from grade I through grade II to grade III tumours ( P <0.001). Clonal DNA heterogeneity was observed in 26.6% of cases analysed and was correlated with p53 protein expression ( P <0.001). These changes probably reflect genomic alterations which may affect potential malignancy of breast cancer. 相似文献
