Food supplements placed daily beside the nests of herring gulls, Larus argentatus, for the first 5 days after the first chick hatched produced improved weight gains over this initial period and higher fledging success, particularly in the third chick. The fledging success of the fed group appears to be due to increased weight gain and not to increased parental protection in the supplemented period. Since there is indirect evidence that food is available this suggests that the parents are putting less effort into foraging for their chicks than they are able to, and less than is in the interests of the third chick, in the first days after hatching. On a separate colony we found that having three chicks in the brood for more than 5 days resulted in lower weight gains for the second chick, but not the first. We suggest that fledging three chicks rather than one or two greatly increases the parents' reproductive effort, and consequently interpret the third egg as primarily insurance against the loss of the first or second.  相似文献

Previous studies indicate that the proximate function of post-conflict affiliative interaction among primates is to reduce a victim's uncertainty about its opponent's future behaviour: the ‘uncertainty reduction hypothesis’ (Aureli & van Schaik 1991; Ethology, 89 , 101–114). This study confirms and extends these results, demonstrating that they are neither a product of captivity nor specific to macaques: both victims and initiators of aggression in a large group of wild olive baboons exhibited elevated rates of self-directed behaviour (SDB) - scratching, autogrooming, body-shaking and yawning - in a 10-min post-conflict period. During this period, they were more likely to receive further aggression. Reconciliation reduced both SDB and the incidence of further aggression. However, reconciliation only reduced SDB among individuals involved in conflicts in which both parties exchanged aggression. It is suggested that aggressors in unilateral conflicts were aroused rather than uncertain and that their victims' lack of control over post-conflict interactions (which tended to be initiated by their opponents) prevented them from benefiting from reconciliation in the same fashion as longtailed macaque victims, which frequently initiated reconciliation.  相似文献

There are potential advantages of housing primates in mixed species exhibits for both the visiting public and the primates themselves. If the primates naturally associate in the wild, it may be more educational and enjoyable for the public to view. Increases in social complexity and stimulation may be enriching for the primates. However, mixed species exhibits might also create welfare problems such as stress from interspecific aggression. We present data on the behavior of single and mixed species groups of capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) housed at the Living Links to Human Evolution Research Centre in the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo. These species associate in the wild, gaining foraging benefits and decreased predation. But Cebus are also predators themselves with potential risks for the smaller Saimiri. To study their living together we took scan samples at ≥15 min intervals on single (n=109) and mixed species groups (n=152), and all occurrences of intraspecific aggression and interspecific interactions were recorded. We found no evidence of chronic stress and Saimiri actively chose to associate with Cebus. On 79% of scans, the two species simultaneously occupied the same part of their enclosure. No vertical displacement was observed. Interspecific interactions were common (>2.5/hr), and equally divided among mildly aggressive, neutral, and affiliative interactions such as play. Only one aggressive interaction involved physical contact and was non‐injurious. Aggressive interactions were mostly (65%) displacements and vocal exchanges, initiated almost equally by Cebus and Saimiri. Modifications to the enclosure were successful in reducing these mildly aggressive interactions with affiliative interactions increasing in frequency and diversity. Our data suggest that in carefully designed, large enclosures, naturally associating monkeys are able to live harmoniously and are enriched by each other. Am. J. The viability of the isolated toad brain in an aerated Ringer-like medium has been evaluated by the following criteria: 1) amino acid content before and after incubation; 2) accumulation of amino acids in the incubation medium; 3) a comparison of glucose utilization and [U-14C]glucose metabolism with that occurring in vivo; 4) tissue swelling; and 5) tissue lactate content. On the basis of these criteria, the isolated toad brain, from toads adapted to a fresh-water or a salt-water environment, retains considerable metabolic integrity for at least 2 hr of incubation at 25° C. Specifically, there was no swelling of the tissue, no apparent accumulation of lactate in the tissue, glucose appeared to be utilized at a rate not too different from that calculated for the toad brain in vivo, and the distribution of label from [U-14C]glucose had an overall pattern which resembled that observed in vivo. The tissue levels of amino acids were generally stable in vitro; however, there was a marked decline in the content of aspartate. The accumulation of amino acids in the medium varied considerably from one amino acid to another. Thus, there was very little net efflux of aspartate, GABA, and glutamate from the tissue but considerable net efflux of glutamine. This efflux of amino acids was greater from brains of hyperosmotically adapted toads than from the brains of toads adapted to fresh water by amounts proportional to their initial tissue contents.  相似文献

Although tool use occurs in diverse species, its complexity may mark an important distinction between humans and other animals. Chimpanzee tool use has many similarities to that seen in humans, yet evidence of the cumulatively complex and constructive technologies common in human populations remains absent in free-ranging chimpanzees. Here we provide the first evidence that chimpanzees have a latent capacity to socially learn to construct a composite tool. Fifty chimpanzees were assigned to one of five demonstration conditions that varied in the amount and type of information available in video footage of a conspecific. Chimpanzees exposed to complete footage of a chimpanzee combining the two components to retrieve a reward learned to combine the tools significantly more than those exposed to more restricted information. In a follow-up test, chimpanzees that constructed tools after watching the complete demonstration tended to do so even when the reward was within reach of the unmodified components, whereas those that spontaneously solved the task (without seeing the modification process) combined only when necessary. Social learning, therefore, had a powerful effect in instilling a marked persistence in the use of a complex technique at the cost of efficiency, inhibiting insightful tool use.  相似文献
