Background
Populations of the Oriental White-backed Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) have declined by over 95% within the past decade. This decline is largely due to incidental consumption of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory veterinary pharmaceutical diclofenac, commonly used to treat domestic livestock. The conservation status of other Gyps vultures in southern Asia is also of immediate concern, given the lack of knowledge regarding status of their populations and the continuing existence of taxonomic uncertainties. In this study, we assess phylogenetic relationships for all recognized species and the majority of subspecies within the genus Gyps. The continuing veterinary use of diclofenac is an unknown but potential risk to related species with similar feeding habits to Gyps bengalensis. Therefore, an accurate assessment of the phylogenetic relationships among Gyps vultures should aid in their conservation by clarifying taxonomic uncertainties, and enabling inference of their respective relatedness to susceptible G. bengalensis. 相似文献2.

Zusammenfassung Ein Paar Türkentauben brütete vom 29. 1. bis 15. 2. 1966 auf einem Straßenbaum in Berlin-Tempelhof. Es wurde nur ein Ei gelegt. Nach 17 Tagen schlüpfte das gelbbedaunte Junge. Es ist dann kurz danach, wahrscheinlich beim Umherkriechen auf dem Nestrand, erfroren. Die Umstände, unter denen die Brut erfolgte, waren äußerst ungünstig. Die Temperatur lag seit dem 7. 2. 1966 dauernd unter Null (–9 und –13 Grad). Die brütende Taube hatte von Anfang an auf dem Nestrand brüten müssen, da die Mulde schon vor der Eiablage völlig mit Schnee bedeckt war. Der brütende Vogel war mehrere Tage und Nächte von einem hohen Schneewall umgeben, der sich auf dem Nest gebildet hatte. Dieses Nest wurde von Mai 1964 an viermal von einem Türkentaubenpaar zum Brüten benutzt. alpha 1-Proteinase inhibitor (alpha 1-PI), a member of the serine
proteinase inhibitor superfamily, has a primary role in controlling
neutrophil elastase activity within the mammalian circulation. Several
studies have indicated that the reactive center region of alpha 1-PI, the
amino acid sequence of which is critical to recognition of and binding to
target proteinases, is highly divergent within and among species. This
appears to be a consequence of accelerated rates of evolution that may have
been driven by positive Darwinian selection. In order to examine this and
other features of alpha 1-PI evolution in more detail, we have isolated and
sequenced cDNAs representing alpha 1- PI mRNAs of the mouse species Mus
saxicola and Mus minutoides and have compared these with a number of other
mammalian alpha 1-PI mRNAs. Relative to other mammalian mRNAs, the extent
of nonsynonymous substitution is generally high throughout the alpha 1-PI
mRNA molecule, indicating greater overall rates of amino acid substitution.
Within and among mouse species, the 5'-half of the mRNA, but not the
3'-half, has been homogenized by concerted evolution. Finally, the reactive
center is under diversifying or positive Darwinian selection in murid
rodents (rats, mice) and guinea pigs yet is under purifying selection in
primates and artiodactyls. The significance of these findings to alpha 1-PI
function and the possible selective forces driving evolution of serpins in
general are discussed.

Patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were examined in 133
mole-rats constituting all four chromosomal species (2n = 52, 2n = 54, 2n =
58, and 2n = 60) of the Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies in Israel, as well
as the peripheral isolates of 2n = 60. In the main range of the complex, a
total of 28 mtDNA haplotypes were found in 64 mole-rats, with most
haplotypes being unique to either a single chromosomal species or
population. mtDNA divergence increased from low to high diploid number in a
north-to-south direction in Israel. Overall levels of mtDNA diversity were
unexpectedly the highest in the 2n = 60, the youngest species of the
complex. The mtDNA haplotypes can be separated into two major groups, 2n =
52-54 and 2n = 58-60, and a phylogenetic analysis for each group revealed
evidence of a few haplotypes not sorted by diploid number. The overall
patterns of mtDNA divergence seen within and among the four chromosomal
species are consistent with the parapatric mode of speciation as suggested
from previous studies of allozyme and DNA hybridization. In a separate data
set the patterns of mtDNA variation were examined across the main
geographic range and across peripheral semi-isolates and isolates of the 2n
= 60 chromosomal species. Fifteen haplotypes were found in 69 mole-rats.
High levels of mtDNA diversity characterized the main range, semi-isolated,
and even some desert isolated populations. The peripheral isolates contain
much mtDNA diversity, including novel haplotypes.

Es wird ein Fall geschildert, aus dem hervorgeht, wodurch die Entdeckung einer besonders ergiebigen Nahrungsquelle den Artgenossen in weitem Umkreis bekannt wird.Das Raubvogel-Schema der Krähen ist sehr weit und schließt nur den Seeadler aus, der (wenigstens im Winter) von ihnen nicht angegriffen, sondern als Nahrungsspender betrachtet wird. Besonders heftig reagieren sie auf den Habicht. 150–200 Nebelkrähen belagerten einen Habicht, der vor ihnen in ein Kiefernstangenholz geflüchtet war. Der Baummarder löst bei Nebelkrähen dieselbe starke Reaktion aus wie der Habicht. Kolkraben scheinen im Winter von Krähen nicht angegriffen zu werden. 相似文献

Analysis of the multispecific B alpha mating-type locus of Schizophyllum commune provided evidence that pheromones and pheromone receptors govern recognition of self versus non-self and sexual development in this homobasidiomycetous fungus. Four subclones of an 8.2 kb genomic fragment carrying B alpha 1 specificity induced B-regulated sexual morphogenesis when introduced into a strain with one of the eight compatible B alpha specificities that are known to exist in nature. One of these clones, which activated all other B alpha specificities, contains a gene termed bar1. The predicted protein product of bar1, as well as that of bar2, a homologous gene isolated from a B alpha 2 strain, has significant homology to known fungal pheromone receptor proteins in the rhodopsin-like superfamily of G protein-linked receptors. The other three active B alpha 1 clones were subcloned further to identify the minimal active element in each clone. Every active subclone contains a putative pheromone gene ending in a signal for possible isoprenylation. A message of approximately 600 bp was observed for one of these genes, bap1(1). This paper presents the first evidence for a system of multiple pheromones and pheromone receptors as a basis for multispecific mating types in a fungus. 相似文献

The genome of the marine ray Discopyge ommata contains at least three p65-related genes. o-p65-A is 84% identical, o-p65-B is 78% identical, and o-p65-C is only 41% identical to a previously characterized rat p65. The cytoplasmic domain, particularly the two regions that are similar to the regulatory domain of protein kinase C, are most highly conserved. The three genes are expressed in different but overlapping patterns in the central nervous system. o-p65-A immunoreactivity is found predominantly in forebrain, cerebellum, and neuroendocrine cells, while o-p65-B immunoreactivity is predominantly localized to the spinal cord, brainstem, and midbrain. Many synaptic vesicle proteins are members of small gene families that are differentially expressed, resulting in several unique combinations of these molecules in specific brain regions. 相似文献

Endocytosis is a protein and lipid-trafficking pathway that occurs in all eukaryotic cells. It involves the internalization of plasma membrane proteins and lipids into the cell and the subsequent degradation of proteins in the lysosome or the recycling of proteins and lipids back to the plasma membrane. Over the past decade, studies in yeast and mammalian cells have revealed endocytosis to be a very complex molecular process that depends on regulated interactions between a variety of proteins and lipids. The Eps15 homology (EH) domain is a conserved, modular protein-interaction domain found in several endocytosis proteins.
