Arteriovenous malformation of the stomach

A patient with chronic anemia is presented who radiologically showed prominent rugae of the stomach. Angiography demonstrated an arteriovenous malformation with a large feeding artery and prominent draining veins.     

Ultrastructure of interstitial cells of Cajal at the gastro-oesophageal junction of the monkey (Macaca fascicularis)

The ultrastructure of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) in the oesophagus of the monkey resembled that described in the oesophagus of other mammalian species but differed in their paucity and almost lack of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, caveolae and filaments. The plasmalemma of the ICC was in close contact (20- to 30-nm gaps) with that of smooth muscle cells. This may occasionally take the form of a desmosome, but gap junctions have not been observed. Vesiculated axon profiles, containing large granular or agranular vesicles were in close contact (20- to 30-nm gaps) with the plasmalemma of ICC. In a few vesiculated profiles a presynaptic density could be recognized. The intercalation of the ICC between the vesiculated axon profiles and the smooth muscle cells suggest a role in oesophageal motility. Between 3 and 21 days following bilateral vagotomy some ICC showed regressive changes such as increased electron density and shrinkage of the cytoplasm, crowding of the organelles and dissolution of the nuclear chromatin material. Axon profiles in the vicinity of the affected ICC contained glycogen granules suggesting injury. In late stages, the number of ICC and smooth muscle contacts was reduced. The results suggest that the vagus nerves exert a trophic influence on the ICC and that the intercellular relationships between ICC and smooth muscle cells possess a degree of plasticity. It is tentatively suggested that these vagal effects may be mediated via the oesophageal myenteric ganglia.     

Ultrastructure of the epithelial cells of the ventral prostate from the hopping mouse Notomys alexis

The large ventral prostate of the hopping mouse has abundant secretory units whose epithelial cells vary in height and which often have nuclei in the apical region of the cell. TEM observations indicated two epithelial cell types in which some unusual features occurred. Type A cells had granular endoplasmetic reticulum (GER) whose membranes often formed intracytoplasmic confronting cisternae. Type B cells had more fragmented and vesiculated GER with sparse ribosomes and less frequently also intracytoplasmic confronting confronting cisternae. In the latter cells, two types of granules were found, one of which was derived from the Golgi and the other possibly directly from the GER. Type A cells only had one type of granule present. A highly convoluted membrane was also found at the basal region in many of the cells. The significance of these unusual ultrastructural features has yet to be ascertained.     

Plasma catecholamines and erythrocyte swelling following capture stress in a marine teleost fish

Plasma concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline were measured at rest from cannulated fish and following net capture. Adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations in capture-stressed fish averaged 36,740 pmol l-1 and 38,860 pmol l-1 respectively, whereas resting values were less than 200 pmol l-1 for both amines. Erythrocyte swelling and raised blood lactate were evident in stressed fish. In vitro effects of 5 mmol l-1 adrenaline on erythrocyte suspensions suggested that the catecholamine had a direct effect on erythrocyte volume. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the oxygen transport properties of the blood.     

A study on giant panda recognition based on images of a large proportion of captive pandas

1. As a highly endangered species, the giant panda (panda) has attracted significant attention in the past decades. Considerable efforts have been put on panda conservation and reproduction, offering the promising outcome of maintaining the population size of pandas. To evaluate the effectiveness of conservation and management strategies, recognizing individual pandas is critical. However, it remains a challenging task because the existing methods, such as traditional tracking method, discrimination method based on footprint identification, and molecular biology method, are invasive, inaccurate, expensive, or challenging to perform. The advances of imaging technologies have led to the wide applications of digital images and videos in panda conservation and management, which makes it possible for individual panda recognition in a noninvasive manner by using image‐based panda face recognition method.
2. In recent years, deep learning has achieved great success in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. For panda face recognition, a fully automatic deep learning algorithm which consists of a sequence of deep neural networks (DNNs) used for panda face detection, segmentation, alignment, and identity prediction is developed in this study. To develop and evaluate the algorithm, the largest panda image dataset containing 6,441 images from 218 different pandas, which is 39.78% of captive pandas in the world, is established.
3. The algorithm achieved 96.27% accuracy in panda recognition and 100% accuracy in detection.
4. This study shows that panda faces can be used for panda recognition. It enables the use of the cameras installed in their habitat for monitoring their population and behavior. This noninvasive approach is much more cost‐effective than the approaches used in the previous panda surveys.

     

Electron microscope study of the structures of the Bacillus subtilis prophages, SPO2 and phi105

Circular duplex structures of the correct length are observed in the electron microscope in hybridization mixtures of lysogen DNA and mature phage DNA for the case of the temperate Bacillus subtilis bacteriophage SPO2. This result shows that the sequence order of the prophage is a circular permutation of that of the mature phage. By making heteroduplexes of prophage DNA with that of the SPO2 deletion mutants, R90 and S25, the att site of the phage has been mapped at 61.2 ± 0.6% from one end of the mature phage DNA, which has a length of 38,600 base pairs. In the same co-ordinate system, the R90 deletion extends from 58.9 ± 0.7 to 66.8 ± 0.8% on the SPO2 chromosome, whereas the S25 deletion extends from 63.2 ± 0.6 to 66.9 ± 0.7%. In similar experiments with lysogen and mature phage DNA's of the temperate B. subtilis phage, φ105, no circular structures were seen. This result shows that the sequence order in the prophage and the phage are colinear, without circular permutation.     

Synthesis of a 3-methyluridine phosphoramidite to investigate the role of methylation in a ribosomal RNA hairpin.

The synthesis of a 5'-O-BzH-2'-O-ACE-protected-3-methyluridine phosphoramidite is reported [BzH, benzhydryloxy-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)silyl; ACE, bis(2-acetoxyethoxy)methyl]. The phosphoramidite was employed in solid-phase RNA synthesis to generate a series of RNA hairpins containing single or multiple modifications, including the common nucleoside pseudouridine. Three 19-nucleotide hairpin RNAs that represent the 1920-loop region (G(1906)-C(1924)) of Escherichia coli 23S ribosomal RNA were generated. Modifications were present at positions 1911, 1915, and 1917. The stabilities and structures of the three RNAs were examined by using thermal melting, circular dichroism, and NMR spectroscopy
