A comparison was made between two methods of measuring the relationshipbetween the external [K+] and the flux of K+ into whole plantsof Lolium perenne and Raphanus sativus. The values of flux obtainedfrom solutions of 1.2 µM K+ held constant around the rootswere three and six times greater for Lolium and Raphanus respectivelythan the values obtained at the same concentration in a depletionexperiment in which the solutions, initially 100 µM K+,were depleted to below 1.2 µM K+ by plant uptake. In thedepletion experiment with Lolium, the flux was higher into plantsgrown at low [K+] than into plants grown at 100 µM eventhough [K+] within the plant was about the same for all groupsof plants. It is suggested that Lolium grown at low [K+] hasan efficient mechanism for K+ uptake which continues to operatefor some time after the plants have been transferred to a higherconcentration. With both species, Km was 15–20 µMin the depletion experiment and below 1 µM when concentrationswere held constant.  相似文献

We investigate the evolution of an individual's willingness to invest in a public good (what we call, helping) in a patch‐structured population with limited natal dispersal. We assume that an individual's decision to invest is informed by its dispersal status: an individual makes one decision given it is native to the patch on which it breeds, and is free to make a different decision given that it is not native to the patch on which it breeds. Unlike previous work, we assume that investment in the public good, and the public good, itself, both have a large effect on individual fecundity. Kin selection analysis reveals that only extreme investment decisions (i.e. ‘always invest’ or ‘never invest’) can be evolutionarily stable. Numerical results suggest that the evolutionary instability of the ‘never invest’ phenotype (what we call, complete nonhelping) implies the evolutionary stability of ‘always invest’ (what we call, complete helping). In addition, numerical results show that bistability of extreme phenotypes is possible, indicating that the adaptive significance of altruism, in this context, is greater than has been previously recognized. Numerical results are supported by computer simulation, and results, themselves, are briefly discussed in a concluding section.  相似文献

E. 1987.Comparison of the effects of root temperature on nitrate andammonium nutrition of oilseed rape (Brassica napusL.) in flowingsolution culture. II. Cation-anion balance.—J. exp. Bot.38: 1589-1602. The effects of root temperature and form of N nutrition (NH4or NOJ) on the mineral composition of the plant, the balanceof inorganic cation-anion uptake and on the apparent net effluxof H +/OHions from the roots were studied with 49-d-oldoilseed rape (Brassica napusL. cv. Bien venu) in flowing solutionculture. Plants were pre-treated for 14 d at a root temperatureof 5 °C prior to constant root temperatures of 3, 7, 11or 17°C for 14 d, with a common shoot temperature of 20/15°Cday/night. Nitrogen was supplied as NH+44 or NO3 at 10mmol m3. Values of Q10 (7-17°C) for mean unit absorptionrates of all the major nutrient ions (K+ , Mg++ , NH+4, SO4,H2PO4, NO3), except Ca++, were > 2.0 over the first 5 d oftreatment but thereafter were < 1.5; the apparent effectof temperature on uptake rates diminished with time. Under NH+4nutrition, inorganic cation uptake (Mg+ + + K++Ca+ + +NH+4)exceeded inorganic anion uptake (SO44+ H2PO4) over 14d at all temperatures, with the proportion of cation uptakeas NH4 remaining constant (0.67-0-68) irrespective of root temperature.The net efflux of H + from the roots approximately balancedNH+4 uptake (1:1) over 14 d at each temperature and also balancedthe difference between the total uptake of inorganic cationsand inorganic anions. Under NO3 nutrition, the sum of the netefflux of OH and the change in the carboxylate contents of plantsover 14 d approximately balanced the sum of NO3 and SO4reduced in the plant. The majority of the negative charge associatedwith the reduction of NO3 and SO4 was apparently effluxedas OH, but this fraction was lower at low root temperatures.The results are discussed in terms of mechanisms that have beenproposed to regulate the internal pH of plants. Abstract Changes in the net uptake rate of K+ and in the average tissue concentration of K+ were measured over 14 d in response to changes in root temperature with oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Bien venu) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Atem). Plants were grown in flowing nutrient solutions containing 2.5 mmol m?3 K+ and were acclimatized over 49 d (rape) or 28 d (barley) to low root temperature (5°C) prior to steady–state treatments at root temperatures between 3 °C and 25 °C, with common air temperature. Uptake of K+ was monitored continuously over 14 d and nitrogen was supplied as NH4++ NO?3 or NH+4 or NO?3. Unit absorption rates of K+ increased with time and with root temperature up to Day 4 or 5 following the change in root temperature. Thereafter they usually approached steady-state, with Q10? 2.0 between 7 °C and 17°C, although rates became similar between 7 °C and 13°C. Uptake of K+ by rape plants was invariably greater under NO?3 nutrition compared with NH+4. The percentage K+ in the plant dry matter increased with temperature from 2% at 3 °C to 4% at 25 °C in rape, but there was less effect of temperature on the average concentrations of K+ in the plant fresh weight or plant water content. Concentrations of K+ in the leaf water fraction of rape plants decreased with increasing root temperature, but in barley they increased with increasing root temperature. Concentrations of K+ in the root water fraction were relatively stable with respect to root temperature. The results are discussed in terms of compensatory changes in K+ uptake following a change in root temperature and the relationships between growth, shoot: root ratio and K+ composition of the plant.  相似文献

The effect of phosphate concentration in flowing solution cultureat a range between 0.04 and 32 mmol m–3 P on the growthof perennial ryegrass was studied in two experiments, each lastingabout 45 d after sowing. Phosphorus contents of seedlings wereaffected by the concentration in solution within about 5 d fromgermination, and dry weight differences were first observedat about 6 d after this. The rate of uptake of phosphate byseedlings was affected by the concentration in solution beforethe root fresh weight or root/emdash shoot ratio had changed.Young plants (less than 4 weeks old) were more sensitive tophosphate concentration in solution than older ones. In conditionsof high rate of growth, older plants required a solution concentrationbetween 0.1 and 0.4 mmol m–3 P to achieve maximum potentialgrowth rate, whereas for plants of similar age but less dryweight, 0.04 mmol m–3 P was adequate. Towards the endof the experimental period, plants growing at a nominal solutionconcentration of 0.04 mmol m–3 P were able to obtain phosphatefrom a solution of about 0.01 mmol m–3P. Phosphate toxicity was not observed, nor were there visual symptoms(other than reduced growth) of phosphate deficiency in plantswhose growth was limited by phosphate concentration in solution. In vitro dosage response data with different isolates of Penicillium digitatum and the fungicide guazatine indicated an approximate 10-fold shift in tolerance when compared with wild type strains. ED50 values for resistant strains were approximately 0.5 μg/ml compared to approximately 0.05, μg/ml for the wild type strains. Colony growth of guazatine resistant isolates on selective media containing carbendazim showed that they were also resistant to the benzimidazole group of fungicides. In vivo tests in inoculated oranges with strains previously characterised by in vitro tests confirmed resistance to guazatine and benomyl. A combined treatment of these fungicides at 400 /μ/ml and 500 μg/ml respectively, which normally gives protection against decay, also failed to provide adequate mould control. Growth and pathogenicity of the resistant strains in these tests in oranges were indistinguishable from that of wild type strains.  相似文献
