High concentrations (1000 parts 106) of trichloroacetate(TCA) inhibit germination of Pinus radiata seed. Seedlings growingin the presence of lower concentrations (100 parts 106)take up TCA where it becomes concentrated in cotyledons anddeveloping primary needles. Abstract Ranunculus prasinus is a mat-forming species of the marginal herbfields and tussock grasslands of brackish wetlands. It is only known from four wetlands, all on private land, in the driest part of Tasmania. The species has been successfully introduced from divisions from three of the populations into a secure reserve with similar vegetation to that of the natural populations. This is considered to be desirable and morally sound in that it increases the chances of survival of native biological diversity as a whole. Overall proteolysis and the activity of skeletal muscle proteolytic systems were investigated in rats 1, 2, or 4 days after adrenodemedullation. Adrenodemedullation reduced plasma epinephrine by 95% and norepinephrine by 35% but did not affect muscle norepinephrine content. In soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles, rates of overall proteolysis increased by 15-20% by 2 days after surgery but returned to normal levels after 4 days. The rise in rates of protein degradation was accompanied by an increased activity of Ca(2+)-dependent proteolysis in both muscles, with no significant change in the activity of lysosomal and ATP-dependent proteolytic systems. In vitro rates of Ca(2+)-dependent proteolysis in soleus and EDL from normal rats decreased by ~35% in the presence of either 10(-5) M clenbuterol, a beta(2)-adrenergic agonist, or epinephrine or norepinephrine. In the presence of dibutyryl cAMP, proteolysis was reduced by 62% in soleus and 34% in EDL. The data suggest that catecholamines secreted by the adrenal medulla exert an inhibitory control of Ca(2+)-dependent proteolysis in rat skeletal muscle, mediated by beta(2)-adrenoceptors, with the participation of a cAMP-dependent pathway. 相似文献

Abstract Results are presented on vascular species richness in three representative alpine plant communities at 1040–1410 m on Mt Burns in the perhumid Fiordland region, a hotspot of alpine plant diversity, in south‐western South Island, New Zealand. Overall species richness was not dissimilar between the three communities in any of the eight plot sizes (mean values of 20.8–24.4 species in the largest plots of 100 m2), even though coefficients of floristic similarity were small (17.9; 23.5) between both low‐alpine communities (snow tussock‐shrubland and snow tussock grassland) and the high‐alpine cushion fellfield. Vascular species richness was generally similar to that in the few other oceanic New Zealand alpine communities for which data are available. The decline in richness from the low‐alpine to high‐alpine zones, revealed in more comprehensive records from two other regions with generally similar oceanic environments, was not recorded, indeed was reversed, on Mt Burns. Whether the recognized biodiversity hotspot of Fiordland has a generally richer high‐alpine flora than other regions in New Zealand needs further examination. The general pattern of alpine floristic richness in relation to elevation, in New Zealand, also prevails in most alpine regions abroad, usually under much more extreme continental environments. This pattern is usually ascribed to the associated decrease in temperature.
