In order to improve the interpretation of the results of pollen analyses concerning mediaeval anthropogenous sediments a set of recent seeds of the principal cereals was pollenanalytically elaborated. The aim was to find out whether pollen grains can be preserved on mature seeds. The pollen spectra obtained from the material of mediaeval anthropogenous sediments include, in most cases, a large amount of pollen of certain plants including cereals. It is suggested that part of the pollen spectra from anthropogenous sediments need not come from air transport, i.e. from the surrounding vegetation; it could get into waste pits in another way. Above all, some foodstuffs were considered to be the sources of pollen grains. The origin of some grains coming from honey and from plant infusions has, at least partly, been demonstrated (Jankovská 1987). As the next step, attention was paid to other products, mainly those of cereals. An experimental pollen analysis of recent seeds of selected cereals showed that pollen grains are preserved on their surface, often in high concentrations. This is due, above all, to the cleistogamy of most cereals. The highest values of pollen grains have so far been found inAvena sativa andPanicum milliaceum. Triticum aestivum andHordeum vulgare showed lower values of pollen grains. The lowest amounts were found in heterogamousSecale cereale. Butomus umbellatus L. is a plant species typical of littoral communities of river and stream shores. It can form continuous stands in shallow reservoirs with fluctuating water level. Their expansion is promoted by: (a) intensive vegetative reproduction of plants, (b) crowded sprouting from rhizome fragments on emerged pond bottom, (c) shallow water layer in the year following summer drainage. Expansion of B. umbellatus depends on ploidy level: two cytotypes were found in the Czech and Slovak Republics, differing in their reproductive ability. Seed production of triploids is strongly limited (they are self-incompatible within clones), while diploids can be fully fertile. Nevertheless, even in diploids, the efficiency of seed reproduction under natural conditions is low. Triploids spread by intensive vegetative reproduction, which is decisive for clonal growth of populations and their regeneration after scraping of bottom surface. During seasonal development, maximum of aboveground biomass is produced in early summer, while underground biomass increases till autumn. Populations ofLuzula multiflora s.l. in Ireland were examined karyologically. Plants from 14 populations were invariably tetraploid with 2n=24. Chromosomes of the tetraploid are of AL type (true tetraploidy). Meiosis of the tetraploids is of the same type as described for otherLuzula taxa in the literature. In meiosis, 12 bivalents are regularly formed. A hypothesis based on the morphological and allozyme data, that the tetraploids are of alloploid origin, is supported by the present results. Meiosis in an artificial hybrid between the presumed parental taxa,L. campestris andL. pallidula, was studied; a certain tendency towards chromosome doubling was observed. The effect of two constant temperatures (23°C and 28°C), mixed group (5 + 5), and isolation on the midgut amylolytic activity during adult development of Tenebrio molitor has been investigated in vitro. Higher temperatures (28°C) and mixed groups stimulate the rate of midgut amylolytic activity. After attaining the maximal level, the amylolytic activity shows fluctuations. The possible role of hormones and primer pheromones in the control of the midgut amylolytic activity in T. molitor adults is discussed. 相似文献

The present study demonstrates that manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) (Escherichia coli), binds nitric oxide (√NO) and stimulates its decay under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The results indicate that previously observed MnSOD-catalyzed √NO disproportionation (dismutation) into nitrosonium (NO+) and nitroxyl (NO? ) species under anaerobic conditions is also operative in the presence of molecular oxygen. Upon sustained aerobic exposure to √NO, MnSOD-derived NO? species initiate the formation of peroxynitrite (ONOO? ) leading to enzyme tyrosine nitration, oxidation and (partial) inactivation. The results suggest that both ONOO? decomposition and ONOO? -dependent tyrosine residue nitration and oxidation are enhanced by metal centre-mediated catalysis. We show that the generation of ONOO? is accompanied by the formation of substantial amounts of H2O2. MnSOD is a critical mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme, which has been found to undergo tyrosine nitration and inactivation in various pathologies associated with the overproduction of √NO. The results of the present study can account for the molecular specificity of MnSOD nitration in vivo. The interaction of √NO with MnSOD may represent a novel mechanism by which MnSOD protects the cell from deleterious effects associated with overproduction of √NO. 相似文献

Protonation in the two-electron/two-proton reduction processes of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenolate (DCIP) is investigated combining density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) methods. DCIP (anion), DCIP?– (radical anion), and DCIP2? (dianion) are considered, including the electronic structure analysis from the prospective of quantum theory of atoms and molecules (QTAIM). It is shown that oxygen on the indophenolate moiety and nitrogen are the first and/or the second proton acceptor sites and their energetic order depends on the total charge of the system. MD simulations of differently charged species interacting with the solvent molecules have been performed for methanol, water, and oxonium cation (H3O+). Methanol and water molecules are found to form only hydrogen bonds with the solute irrespective of its charge. The calculated pKa values show that the imino group of DCIPH? is a weaker acid than water. While in the case of DCIP (and DCIP?–) plus oxonium cation, proton transfer from the solvent to the solute was evidenced for both aforementioned acceptor sites. In addition, MD simulations of bulks containing 15 and 43 molecules of water around the DCIP molecule have been performed, revealing the formation of 2–4 hydrogen bonds. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the most commonly used cervical sampling devices. STUDY DESIGN: We examined seven cytology sampling devices (Cytobrush, Cervex brush, Szalay spatula, Papex spatula, WrGKK spatula [main social security agency in Vienna], cotton swab and loop). Eight hundred smears were assessed for even distribution of cells, percentage of slide surface covered with cells, and presence and number of endocervical cells. RESULTS: Even distribution of cells was best with the WrGKK spatula. Percentage of slide surface covered with evaluable cells was best with the Cytobrush. Highest ranking for the presence of endocervical cells was found for the Cytobrush. Cotton swabs and loop showed inferior results in all categories. CONCLUSION: The use of cervical cell sampling devices showing the best cytologic results improves the interpretation and validity of cervical smears. Our results suggest that cotton swabs and loops should not be used for cervical cell sampling. 相似文献
