Orobates pabsti, a basal diadectid from the lower Permian, is a key fossil for the understanding of early amniote evolution. Quantitative analysis of anatomical information suffers from fragmentation of fossil bones, plastic deformation due to diagenetic processes and fragile preservation within surrounding rock matrix, preventing further biomechanical investigation. Here we describe the steps taken to digitally reconstruct MNG 10181, the holotype specimen of Orobates pabsti, and subsequently use the digital reconstruction to assess body mass, position of the centre of mass in individual segments as well as the whole animal, and study joint mobility in the shoulder and hip joints. The shape of most fossil bone fragments could be recovered from micro-focus computed tomography scans. This also revealed structures that were hitherto hidden within the rock matrix. However, parts of the axial skeleton had to be modelled using relevant isolated bones from the same locality as templates. Based on the digital fossil, mass of MNG 10181 was estimated using a model of body shape that was varied within a plausible range to account for uncertainties of the dimension. In the mean estimate model the specimen had an estimated mass of circa 4 kg. Varying of the mass distribution amongst body segments further revealed that Orobates carried most of its weight on the hind limbs. Mostly unrestricted joint morphology further suggested that MNG 10181 was able to effectively generate propulsion with the pelvic limbs. The digital reconstruction is made available for future biomechanical studies.  相似文献

The rostrum of most ziphiids (beaked whales) displays bizarre swollen regions, accompanied with extreme hypermineralisation and an alteration of the collagenous mesh of the bone. The functional significance of this specialization remains obscure. With the voluminous and dense hemispheric excrescence protruding from the premaxillae, the recently described fossil ziphiid Globicetus hiberus is the most spectacular case. This study describes the histological structure and interprets the growth pattern of this unique feature. Histologically, the prominence in Globicetus is made up of an atypical fibro‐lamellar complex displaying an irregular laminar organization and extreme compactness (osteosclerosis). Its development is suggested to have resulted from a protraction of periosteal accretion over the premaxillae, long after the end of somatic growth. Complex shifts in the geometry of this tissue are likely to have occurred during its accretion and no indication of Haversian remodeling could be found. X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the bone matrix in the premaxillary prominence of Globicetus closely resembles that of the rostrum of the extant beaked whale Mesoplodon densirostris: apatite crystals are of common size and strongly oriented, but the collagenous meshwork within bone matrix seems to be extremely sparse. These morphological and structural data are discussed in the light of functional interpretations proposed for the highly unusual and diverse ziphiid rostrum. J. We consider estimation after a group sequential test. An estimator that is unbiased or has small bias may have substantial conditional bias (Troendle and Yu, 1999, Coburger and Wassmer, 2001). In this paper we derive the conditional maximum likelihood estimators of both the primary parameter and a secondary parameter, and investigate their properties within a conditional inference framework. Population structure, leaf phenology and leaf turnover were followed over a 29-month period in Zamia debilis L.f. ex Aiton (Zamiaceae), an understory species in the Cambalache Forest in northern Puerto Rico. It was not possible to determine plant age or to measure the subterranean stems; size classes based on leaf number and leaf × leaflet number indices were used to determine population structure. Despite seasonal and year to year fluctuations in leaf number at the individual and population level, population profiles remained relatively constant. At any one time, over 50% of the population was composed of unbranched individuals with one or two leaves. Only 7% of the plants were branched. Plants with seven or more leaves comprised at a maximum 8% of the population, but accounted for 28% of the total foliage. Size classes based on leaf number and on a leaf × leaflet index gave approximately reverse J-shaped curves typical of trees with shade tolerant seedlings and saplings. New leaves emerged throughout the year, with a peak at the beginning of the rainy season in May or June and lowest production during the dry months of February through April. Average leaf life expectancy was approximately 2.3 years. Leaf death occurred over an extended period of time by the loss of individual leaflets. Patterns in leaf production and loss differed between few- and many-leaved plants. On the average, as the number of mature leaves on a plant increased, time between emergence of new leaves decreased. In many-leaved plants more than one event of new leaf emergence per year was common. Individuals with one to three mature leaves and individuals with four or more mature leaves differed in their response to water stress: few-leaved plants generally reduced the rate of new leaf production and retained old leaves longer. Plants with more than three leaves continued to produce new leaves, but the rate of leaf mortality increased so that most had a net leaf loss. There was no evidence that leaf emergence or retention were affected by cone production or seed maturation.  相似文献

Summary Fibrous components other than collagen fibrils in the reticular fiber of mouse lymph node were studied by electron microscopy. Bundles of microfibrils not associated by elastin and single microfibrils dispersed among collagen fibrils were present. The diameter of the microfibrils was 13.29±2.43 nm (n=100). Elastin-associated microfibrils occurred at the periphery of the reticular fiber. Elastin was enclosed by microfibrils, thus forming the elastic fiber, which was clearly demonstrated by tannic acid-uranyl acetate staining. In the reticular fiber of lymph nodes, the elastic fiber consisted of many more microfibrils and a small amount of elastin. These microfibrils, together with the collagen fibrils, may contribut to the various functions of the reticular fibers.  相似文献

Home ranges and habitat use are described for three adult female, one adult male, and one subadult male wolverines in the Kluane Game Sanctuary, Yukon. When long distance excursions are not included, home ranges of wolverines in the Kluane Game Sanctuary were between 76 and 269 km2 for females and 209 and 269 km2 for males. Habitat use of females was similar to habitat availability. Males used subalpine coniferous habitats more frequently than other habitat types during winter. Although individual variation in the use of forest cover types, aspects, slopes and elevations was apparent, seasonal use did not differ from availability for each sex. Within the 1590 km2 study area, three adult males and six adult females were present, corresponding to a density of one resident wolverine 177 km-2.  相似文献

Summary A unique cytoplasmic connection between erythroblasts was studied by electron microscopy in mouse hemopoietic tissues (fetal liver, fetal and neonatal spleen and adult bone marrow). Many pairs of interphase erythroblasts were connected by a cytoplasmic bridge that was very thin and sometimes long in comparison with telophase bridges. The stage of maturation of the cells in a pair was similar. Small numbers of microtubules ran along the cytoplasmic bridge; a mid-body was not seen. The plasma membrane at approximately the middle of the bridge bulged to form a ring-shaped ridge filled with dense amorphous substances; this was called a bulging ring. Thus, the cytoplasmic bridge between erythroblasts did not morphologically correspond to the telophase bridge in the usual cytokinesis. Cytoplasmic bridges were observed in various differentiating stages of erythroblasts, whereas other cell types of the hemopoietic lineage did not have such a bridge. The cytoplasmic bridge is unique to erythroblasts and provides an evidence for the atypical cytokinesis of the erythroblastic lineage.  相似文献
