Urinary tract infections are second most important diseases worldwide due to the increased amount of antibiotic resistant microbes. Among the Gram negative bacteria, P. mirabilis is the dominant biofilm producer in urinary tract infections next to E. coli. Biofilm is a process that produced self-matrix of more virulence pathogens on colloidal surfaces. Based on the above fact, this study was concentrated to inhibit the P. mirabilis biofilm formation by various in-vitro experiments. In the current study, the anti-biofilm effect of essential oils was recovered from the medicinal plant of Solanum nigrum, and confirmed the available essential oils by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis. The excellent anti-microbial activity and minimum biofilm inhibition concentration of the essential oils against P. mirabilis was indicated at 200 µg/mL. The absence of viability and altered exopolysaccharide structure of treated cells were showed by biofilm metabolic assay and phenol–sulphuric acid method. The fluorescence differentiation of P. mirabilis treated cells was showed with more damages by confocal laser scanning electron microscope. Further, more morphological changes of essential oils treated cells were differentiated from normal cells by scanning electron microscope. Altogether, the results were reported that the S. nigrum essential oils have anti-biofilm ability. 相似文献

Increasing numbers of cancer patients survive and live longer than five years after therapy, but very often side effects of cancer treatment arise at same time. One of the side effects, chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI), also called “chemobrain” or “chemofog” by patients, brings enormous challenges to cancer survivors following successful chemotherapeutic treatment. Decreased abilities of learning, memory, attention, executive function and processing speed in cancer survivors with CICI, are some of the challenges that greatly impair survivors' quality of life. The molecular mechanisms of CICI involve very complicated processes, which have been the subject of investigation over the past decades. Many mechanistic candidates have been studied including disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), DNA damage, telomere shortening, oxidative stress and associated inflammatory response, gene polymorphism of neural repair, altered neurotransmission, and hormone changes. Oxidative stress is considered as a vital mechanism, since over 50% of FDA-approved anti-cancer drugs can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) or reactive nitrogen species (RNS), which lead to neuronal death. In this review paper, we discuss these important candidate mechanisms, in particular oxidative stress and the cytokine, TNF-alpha and their potential roles in CICI. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to describe a wide spectrum of surface structural and anatomical details of the Chinese brake
fern (Pteris vittata) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM revealed that the epidermal cells of the pinnae were elongated with raised
periclinal and sinuous anticlinal walls. The pinnae were hypostomatous with randomly scattered anomocytic stomatal complexes
positioned at the same level as the epidermis. Stomates were large and elliptical (27.4 μm × 10.2 μm). Cross sections from
the central regions of the rachis and the stipe revealed V- and U-shaped vascular bundles, respectively. In each vascular
bundle, the xylem strands were sea-horse shaped (hippocampus). In contrast, the pinnae possessed a triangular vascular bundle
with uniform mesophyll organization comprising of homogenous lobed parenchyma cells. The indumentum consisted of trichomes
and scales, which formed various types of vestiture. Trichomes were borne only on the pinnae and scales on the rachis and
stipe. The roots developed a dense network of long root hairs averaging 244 μm long, and the xylem consisted of tracheids
with scalariform pitting. Sori were submarginal; continuous along both margins of the pinna and were covered with a false
indusium. The sporangia were oblong with a short thick stalk and the annulus was positioned vertically resulting in transverse
dehiscence of the sporangium. The paraphyses were uniseriate, unbranched, septate and found to be intermixed with the sporangia.
The exine of the globose spores was adorned with thick reticulum in which the areoles contained round tubercles. This study
describes surface features in detail, which is essential to studies examining the issue of whether morphological characteristics
are related to arsenic hyperaccumulation inP. vittata. 相似文献

PurposeAssess prevalence of myopia and identify associated risk factors in urban school children.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study screening children for sub-normal vision and refractive errors in Delhi. Vision was tested by trained health workers using ETDRS charts. Risk factor questionnaire was filled for children with vision <6/9.5, wearing spectacles and for a subset (10%) of randomly selected children with normal vision. All children with vision <6/9.5 underwent cycloplegic refraction. The prevalence of myopia <-0.5 diopters was assessed. Association of risk factors and prevalence of myopia was analyzed for children with myopia and randomly selected non myopic children and adjusted odds ratio values for all risk factors were estimated.ResultsA total number of 9884 children were screened with mean age of 11.6 + 2.2 years and 66.8% boys. Prevalence of myopia was 13.1% with only 320 children (24.7%) wearing appropriate spectacles. Mean myopic spherical error was -1.86 + 1.4 diopters. Prevalence of myopia was higher in private schools compared to government schools (p<0.001), in girls vs. boys (p = 0.004) and among older (> 11 years) children (p<0.001). There was a positive association of myopia with studying in private schools vs. government schools (p<0.001), positive family history (p< 0.001) and higher socio-economic status (p = 0.037). Positive association of presence of myopia was observed with children studying/reading > 5 hours per day (p < 0.001), watching television > 2 hours / day (p < 0.001) and with playing computer/video/mobile games (p < 0.001). An inverse association with outdoor activities/playing was observed with children playing > 2 hours in a day.ConclusionMyopia is a major health problem in Indian school children. It is important to identify modifiable risk factors associated with its development and try to develop cost effective intervention strategies. 相似文献

B lymphomas account for the majority of the lymphoma cases. BCR expression appears to be important for B lymphoma because most oncogenes are translocated to nonrearranged Ig loci and because all of the variants that arise in anti-idiotypic Ab-treated lymphoma patients remain BCR positive. Based on this and the fact that BCR is required for mature B cell survival, we tested the requirement for continued expression of BCR for the growth and survival of B lymphoma cells. Using Igalpha or Igbeta-specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) to inhibit BCR expression, we demonstrate for the first time that constitutive signaling by BCR is critical for survival and proliferation of both murine and human B lymphoma cells. The BCR signals in lymphoma appear to be mediated by Syk, as it is constitutively active in a variety of B lymphoma cells. Blocking Syk activity by selective inhibitors suppresses growth of several murine and human B lymphomas. 相似文献

A DBA/1 B10.D2-specific monoclonal antibody (CY34) is described which defines a new murine B lymphocyte differentiation antigen designated Lyb-8.2. The ontogeny, strain distribution, and cell-surface density of the antigen were studied by radioimmunoassay and by fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis. Lyb-8.2 appears to be expressed on pre-B cells and on all mature B lymphocytes. Lyb-8.2 molecules immunoprecipitated from surface labeled B10.D2 spleen cells migrated in polyacrylamide gels with an apparent mol. wt. of 95000–105000 daltons and were bound by lentil lectin. The expression of Lyb-8.2 is controlled by a locus on chromosome 7 that is closely linked to Gpi-1 and RP-2. Added Lyb-8.2-specific antibody did not measurably impair B lymphocyte function in several in vitro systems studied. 相似文献
