Goats and some sheep synthesize a juvenile hemoglobin, Hb C (alpha 2 beta
C2), at birth and produce this hemoglobin exclusively during severe anemia.
Sheep that synthesize this juvenile hemoglobin are of the A haplotype.
Other sheep, belonging to a separate group, the B haplotype, do not
synthesize hemoglobin C and during anemia continue to produce their adult
hemoglobin. To understand the basis for this difference we have determined
the structural organization of the beta- globin locus of B-type sheep by
constructing and isolating overlapping genomic clones. These clones have
allowed us to establish the linkage map 5' epsilon I-epsilon II-psi beta
I-beta B-epsilon III-epsilon IV- psi beta II-beta F3' in this haplotype.
Thus, B sheep lack four genes, including the BC gene, and have only eight
genes, compared with the 12 found in the goat globin locus. The goat
beta-globin locus is as follows: 5' epsilon I-epsilon II-psi beta X-beta
C-epsilon III-epsilon IV-psi beta Z-beta A-epsilon V-epsilon VI-psi beta
Y-beta F3'. Southern blot analysis of A-type sheep reveals that these
animals have a beta- globin locus similar to that of goat, i.e., 12 globin
genes. Thus, the beta-globin locus of B-haplotype sheep resembles that of
cows and may have retained the duplicated locus of the ancestor of cows and
sheep. Alternatively, the B-sheep locus arrangement may be the result of a
deletion of a four-gene set from the triplicated locus.

The teratogenic and goitrogenic effects of Propineb, dithiocarbamate pesticide and Propylenthiourea (PLTU), its metabolite and degradation product have been studied. The aim of this study was to show the possible correlation between the two activities. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with Propineb and PLTU starting from 6th to 16th day of pregnancy. The functional state of maternal and foetal thyroid, the toxicity of products versus dams and embryotoxic and teratogenic effects were examined. The observed goitrogenic effect may be compared to that reported in the previous studies of the authors, if considering time of sacrifice. In fact, the lesion quickly rises and as rapidly regresses when treatment is stopped. The foetal thyroid has not been affected by the product administered to the dams. PLTU showed a clear teratogenic activity at doses that did not show any maternal toxicity (45 and 90 mg/k). 相似文献

Gold salts and phenylbutazone selectively inhibit the synthesis of PGF2α and PGE2 respectively. Lowered production of one prostaglandin species is accompanied by an increased production of the other. Selective inhibition by these drugs was observed in the presence of adrenaline, reduced glutathione and copper sulphate under conditions when most anti-inflammatory compounds inhibited PGE2 and PGF2α syntheses equally. It is postulated that selective inhibitors may have a different mode of action
and beneficial effects may be related to the endogenous ratio of PGE to PGF required for normal function. 相似文献

Fish of the genus Selene, known as lookdowns or moonfish, are one of the most morphologically derived groups of the family Carangidae, whose phylogenetic relationships are still largely unknown. In this study, we discuss karyoevolutionary aspects of three representatives of this genus from the Western Atlantic: Selene brownii (2n = 48; FN = 48), Selene setapinnis (2n = 46; FN = 48), and Selene vomer (2n = 48; FN = 50). Their body patterns were also investigated and compared to one another and in relation to two other species of different genera. Two mechanisms of karyotypic evolution seem to have acted in the diversification of this genus, namely pericentric inversions and centric fusions. Mapping of rDNA sequences showed that chromosome pairs bearing 5S rDNA sites are similar, whereas those bearing 18 rDNA sites are morphologically distinct while apparently also exhibiting interspecies synteny. Although the nucleolar organizer-bearing chromosomes are extremely efficient cytotaxonomic markers among Selene species, others cytogenetic patterns of these species are relatively conserved. Hybridization with telomeric probes (TTAGGG)n did not exhibit interstitial telomeric sites (ITS), especially in S. setapinnis, where, along with a reduction in diploid number, a large metacentric pair derived from centric fusion is present. Data obtained by geometric morphometrics enable a clear morphological distinction among the three species, as well as in relation to two other species of the genus Caranx and Oligoplites. Recent evidence of the occurrence of atypical Chlamydiaceae strains in pigeons, different from the established Chlamydiaceae, requires the development of a specific and rapid detection tool to investigate their prevalence and significance. Here is described a new real-time PCR assay that allows specific detection of atypical Chlamydiaceae from pigeons. The assay has been used to assess the dissemination of these strains in field samples collected from Parisian pigeon populations in 2009. The results suggest a limited dissemination compared to the usually higher prevalence of Chlamydia psittaci that is the main species associated with avian chlamydiosis. 相似文献

Two silicone coatings have been evaluated for barnacle adhesion. One coating is an unfilled hydrosilation cured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network, while the other is a room temperature vulcanized (RTV), filled, ethoxysiloxane cured PDMS elastomer, RTV11?. The adhesion strength of one species of barnacle, Balanus eburneus, to the hydrosilation coatings is in the range of 0.37–0.60 kg cm‐2 while the corresponding range for RTV11 is 0.64–0.90 kg cm‐2. The easier release of B. eburneus from the hydrosilation cured network compared to RTV11 is discussed in relationship to differences in bulk and surface properties. Preliminary results suggest bulk modulus may be the most important parameter in determining barnacle adhesion strength. In light or mechanical property analysis, a re‐evaluation of surface properties and chemical stability is presented. 相似文献

Chromosomal rearrangements such as inversions can facilitate speciation even in the presence of gene flow. The present study aims to analyze the karyotypic variation in six populations of Geophagus brasiliensis from southern Brazil. All specimens showed 2n = 48 chromosomes, but three karyotypes were found to have one, two or three pairs of submetacentric chromosomes. Although G. brasiliensis did not exhibit variation in the diploid number, it presented a wide interpopulational variation mainly regarding the karyotype formula and specific chromosomal markers. Differences in the location of the major and minor rDNA loci were observed among the populations. Moreover, different patterns were observed in the distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin, presenting intra- and interpopulational variation. This supports the hypothesis that this taxon represents a complex species or that cryptic species are included in this group, indicating a possibleprocess of sympatric speciation. By potentially restricting gene flow between heterokaryotypes, the segregating chromosome rearrangements we describe for G. brasiliensis may play a role in diversification in this species complex. 相似文献

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is characterized by high rates of psychotic symptoms and schizophrenia, making this condition a promising human model for studying risk factors for psychosis. We explored the predictive value of ultra high risk (UHR) criteria in a sample of patients with 22q11DS. We also examined the additional contribution of socio‐demographic, clinical and cognitive variables to predict transition to psychosis within a mean interval of 32.5 ± 17.6 months after initial assessment. Eighty‐nine participants with 22q11DS (age range: 8‐30 years; mean 16.1 ± 4.7) were assessed using the Structured Interview for Psychosis‐Risk Syndromes. Information on Axis I diagnoses, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, level of functioning and IQ was also collected. At baseline, 22 (24.7%) participants met UHR criteria. Compared to those without a UHR condition, they had a significantly lower functioning, more frequent anxiety disorders, and more severe psychopathology. Transition rate to psychosis was 27.3% in UHR and 4.5% in non‐UHR participants. Cox regression analyses revealed that UHR status significantly predicted conversion to psychosis. Baseline level of functioning was the only other additional predictor. This is the first study investigating the predictive value of UHR criteria in 22q11DS. It indicates that the clinical path leading to psychosis is broadly comparable to that observed in other clinical high‐risk samples. Nevertheless, the relatively high transition rate in non‐UHR individuals suggests that other risk markers should be explored in this population. The role of low functioning as a predictor of transition to psychosis should also be investigated more in depth. 相似文献
