Aphanius almiriensis is the first time reported from Italy, where it occurs in the Palude del Capitano. The newly found population agree with Greek A. almiriensis in molecular (COI) and morphological characters. Aphanius almiriensis might be native to the the Palude del Capitano, which is outside from the species known range in the Aegean Sea basin. It might also have been imported with goods from the eastern Aegean in the late Republican age and the late Imperial period. The diagnostic morphological characters as well as the distribution and conservation status of A. almiriensis is discussed. A distribution map and associated, georeferenced database of A. almiriensis as well as of A. fasciatus are presented.  相似文献

Millerichthys robustus is the only annual killifish distributed in America with phenotypic color variations, not yet described. Accordingly, we first describe the color pattern in both sexes to define its phenotypical variations. We then analyze the frequency of these phenotypes on a geographical scale, in four localities that represent opposite points of Millerichthys’s distribution in the Mexican southeast. Color analysis based on the RGB system allowed us to define five-color phenotypes in males continuously distributed in various perceptual units between two extreme colors (yellow-red): yellow, moderate orange, dark orange, strong orange and red. These color patterns found in M. robustus could be attributed to melanin, carotenoid, and pteridine pigments. The orange phenotypes was present in all localities studied. The yellow phenotype was present only in northeastern and northwestern locations, and the red phenotype was present only in northern populations. Female color variations were observed in the number of ocelli (from 1 to 15) at the base of the caudal peduncle and dorsal region. Ocelli have been associated with anti-predator functions because they resemble the eyes of vertebrates, thus shifting the target of predator attacks to less vital body parts. Females with 3 ocelli were the most frequent phenotype, and females with 13–15 ocelli occurred only in the northern populations. We concluded that male and female of M. robustus are not randomly distributed along their distribution range, which suggest that color phenotypes may react differently to biotic and abiotic factors that probably determine their distribution and frequency within the studied population.

Evolutionary theories of senescence postulate that lifespan is determined by the age-dependent decrease in the effects of natural selection. Factors that influence survival and reproduction at early life stages have a larger impact on fitness than factors that influence later life stages. According to these views, selection for rapid sexual maturation and a steep age-dependent decrease in fitness drive the evolution of short lifespans. Here, we report on the survival trajectory of Nothobranchius furzeri (Pisces: Ciprinodontidae): a member of a group of annual species found in temporary bodies of water whose life expectancy in the wild is limited to a few months. We find that maximum survival of N. furzeri in the laboratory is less than 12 weeks. The temporal trajectory of survival shows an age-dependent increase in the mortality rate that is typical of organisms with defined lifespans. The lifespan of N. furzeri is exceptionally short for a vertebrate: owing to its small size and the possibility of propagation in captivity, N. furzeri could be used as a convenient model for ageing research.  相似文献

Molecular and morphological data were used to explore evolutionary differentiation among populations of Nothobranchius in the Lake Malawi–upper Shire River and the Lakes Chilwa–Chiuta drainage systems in Malawi. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that Nothobranchius of the Malawi–Shire system constitute a separate evolutionary group from Nothobranchius kirki. Mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data show a strongly supported phylogenetic split into two monophyletic groups separating the Lake Malawi basin fish from N. kirki. Unlike N. kirki, Lake Malawi–Shire fish do not deviate from neutrality and express an excess of rare haplotypes and mutations in terminal branches, characteristic of recently expanded populations. Further, the two groups significantly differ in morphology. Two body characters (dorsal‐fin base length and pre‐pelvic–pre‐anal distance) are significantly different between the two species in both sexes. Several other characters are significantly different in either male or female comparisons with respect to both standard and head lengths, and robust morphological differentiation is detected by multivariate analysis. The two groups are readily distinguished on the basis of male colouration, especially in scale centres and the caudal fin. On the basis of this differentiation at the molecular and morphological levels, in addition to colouration, the Lake Malawi–Shire fish are hereby formally recognized as constituting a new species, Nothobranchius wattersi. This distinction is in agreement with the geomorphologic and recent climatic history in the region.  相似文献

We used inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) technique to obtain species-specific molecular markers for the cyprinodontiform fish Valencia hispanica, Valencia letourneuxi and Aphanius fasciatus. The aims were (i) to assess the effectiveness of ISSRs in discriminating the three species and (ii) to identify tissues of two unidentified fish suspected to belong to one of the three above species by comparing ISSR genotypes. Nine ISSR primers produced 101 scorable polymorphic loci with a large number of species-specific bands. UPGMA cluster analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling of inter-individual genetic dissimilarities were consistent in separating the three species and attributing the unidentified individuals to V. hispanica. This result was corroborated by the assignment test. ISSRs represent an attractive tool for specimen and species identification. We recommend their use, coupled with appropriate statistical analyses, in species identification when only small portions of the organisms are available.  相似文献

Diapause is a metabolic arrest expressed by annual killifish embryos as an extreme adaptation to persist in environments that show alternate periods of favourable‐hostile conditions along the annual cycle. Survival under deteriorated condition can be considered as the final consequence of a previous set of complementary morphophysiological and behavioral processes in adult fishes. Millerichthys robustus is the only annual fish that has developed an annual life history in North America wherewith allow us to consider it as an emerging model for annual killifishes to review, analyze and integrate the knowledge about its reproductive biology involved in allowing the embryos in diapause to survive face the hostile environmental condition. First, we review developmental ecology of Millerichthys embryos throughout different periods (flood, drought and humid) of the annual life cycle showing the possible developmental trajectories in situ. We then analyze: (i) the way in which embryos achieve survive drought from protective cortical structures (perivitelline space and egg envelope) that present dynamic changes according to the conditions to which they are exposed buffering the harmful effects of high temperatures and water loss. (ii) The nature and origin of these protective structures during the ovogenesis (cortical alveoli and zona pellucida give rise to the perivitelline space and egg envelope respectively and oil droplets represent an emergency nutritional reserve). (iii) Sexual synchronization through secretion of pheromones and the reproductive behavior that allows them to spawn under the substrate. Embryonic survival is achieved by success of simplest interactions between reproductive biology elements prior to embryo development.  相似文献
