Thelocarpon cyaneum sp. nov.

Thelocarpon cyaneum, a new lichenicolous fungus on Polyblastia, is described from Antarctica.     

Platelet-derived growth factor stimulates chemotaxis and nucleic acid synthesis in the protozoan Tetrahymena

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is in concentrations of a few nanograms per ml a very active chemoattractant for the free-living ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena; at the same time it induces a rapid increase in incorporation of radioactive nucleic acid precursors into RNA and DNA. We find it remarkable that this lower eukaryote responds to platelet-derived growth factor in very much the same way as fibroblastic cells.

Summary A case of Meckel or Gruber syndrome is reported, together with a survey of the relevant literature of recent years (1971–1977), in reference to a probably autosomal recessive inheritance of this malformation.     

Prevalence of Edwards' syndrome. Clustering and seasonal variation?

Summary The incidence of Edwards' syndrome was found to be 1 per 4857 newborn children of 34000 consecutively newborn children in two Danish counties. Six of the 7 cases were born during the months of February through April.The incidence was high compared with the expected incidence of Edwards' syndrome of approximately 1 per 10000. This might be due to clustering in the area studied during the period 1967 to 1973.The finding of variations in incidence of children with Edwards' syndrome in different parts of the world, as well as the finding of seasonal variation in birth of such children, indicates that some of the etiological factors of nondisjunction of chromosome 18 are of an environmental nature.     

Adipose tissue interleukin-18 mRNA and plasma interleukin-18: effect of obesity and exercise

Objectives: Obesity and a physically inactive lifestyle are associated with increased risk of developing insulin resistance. The hypothesis that obesity is associated with increased adipose tissue (AT) interleukin (IL)‐18 mRNA expression and that AT IL‐18 mRNA expression is related to insulin resistance was tested. Furthermore, we speculated that acute exercise and exercise training would regulate AT IL‐18 mRNA expression. Research Methods and Procedures: Non‐obese subjects with BMI < 30 kg/m² (women: n = 18; men; n = 11) and obese subjects with BMI >30 kg/m² (women: n = 6; men: n = 7) participated in the study. Blood samples and abdominal subcutaneous AT biopsies were obtained at rest, immediately after an acute exercise bout, and at 2 hours or 10 hours of recovery. After 8 weeks of exercise training of the obese group, sampling was repeated 48 hours after the last training session. Results: AT IL‐18 mRNA content and plasma IL‐18 concentration were higher (p < 0.05) in the obese group than in the non‐obese group. AT IL‐18 mRNA content and plasma IL‐18 concentration was positively correlated (p < 0.05) with insulin resistance. While acute exercise did not affect IL‐18 mRNA expression at the studied time‐points, exercise training reduced AT IL‐18 mRNA content by 20% in both sexes. Discussion: Because obesity and insulin resistance were associated with elevated AT IL‐18 mRNA and plasma IL‐18 levels, the training‐induced lowering of AT IL‐18 mRNA content may contribute to the beneficial effects of regular physical activity with improved insulin sensitivity.     

Cross-resistance between dieldrin and fipronil in German cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae)

The toxicity of fipronil and dieldrin was determined in one susceptible laboratory strain and seven insecticide-resistant field-collected strains of Blattella germanica (L). The Zo960302 and Ga021001 strains were 1,270- and 2,030-fold resistant to dieldrin and 15- and 14-fold resistant to fipronil. The Su960304 and Od010803 strains were 15- and 13-fold resistant to dieldrin and two- and four-fold resistant to fipronil. Three strains showed no or a low level of resistance to dieldrin and fipronil. Crosses were performed between the susceptible strain Danish Pest Infestation Laboratory (DPIL)-SUS and the resistant strains Zo960302 and Su960304 and resistance to dieldrin and fipronil were intermediate compared with the susceptible and the resistant strains. Backcrosses to both of the parental strains showed cosegregation of dieldrin and fipronil resistance. The toxicity of dieldrin and fipronil was correlated when compared at LD50, and 93% of the observed variation in LD50 of fipronil can be ascribed to variation among predictions based on the value of LD50 of dieldrin. The frequency of the A302S substitution in the resistance to dieldrin (Rdl) gene in the highly dieldrin- and fipronil-resistant strains Zo960302 and Ga021001 and the moderately resistant Su960304 was 0.97, 1.0, and 0.38, respectively. We consider the connection between the frequency of the Rdl mutation and dieldrin and fipronil resistance a causal connection and not merely a coincidence.     

Bis(cyclopentadienyl) zirconium(IV) amides as possible precursors for low pressure CVD and plasma-enhanced ALD

Low pressure chemical vapour deposition (LPCVD) of [ZrCp₂(NMe₂)₂] (1), [ZrCp₂(η²-MeNCH₂CH₂NMe)] (2), [ZrCp′₂(NMe₂)₂] (3) and [ZrCp′₂(NEt₂)₂] (4) (Cp = η⁵-cyclopentadienyl, Cp′ = η⁵-monomethylcyclopentadienyl), onto glass substrates at 600 °C, afforded highly reflective and adhesive films of zirconium carbide and amorphous carbon. Powder XRD indicated that the films were largely amorphous, although small, broad peaks accounting for ZrC and ZrO₂ were present, suggesting that the remaining carbon was due to amorphous deposits from the cyclopentadienyl ligands. SEM images showed an island-growth mechanism with distinct crevices between the concentric nodules. Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) of compounds 1 and 2 showed that the precursors were not sufficiently stable or volatile to give a good rate of film growth.
