It is widely believed that environmental variability is the main cause for fluctuations in commercially exploited small pelagic fish populations around the world. Nevertheless, density-dependent factors also can drive population dynamics. In this paper, we analyzed thirteen years of a relative abundance index of two clupeoids fish populations coexisting in the central-south area off Chile, namely the common sardine, Strangomera bentincki, and anchovy, Engraulis ringens. We applied the classical diagnostic tools of time series analysis to the observed time-series. Also, the realized per capita population growth rate was studied with the aim of detecting the feedback structure that is characterizing the population dynamics of the two species. The analysis suggests that population fluctuations of the two species have an important density-dependent component, displaying first-order (direct density-dependent) and second-order (delayed density-dependent) simultaneously. The density-dependent component explained 70.5 and 55.6 % of the realized per capita population growth rate of common sardine and anchovy, respectively. The deterministic skeleton model showed an asymptotic convergence to equilibrium density. In presence of a stochastic environment, fluctuations were reproduced for the species showing a component of fluctuation with a period of 4 year. The intrinsic dynamics of each species is typical of interacting species resulting from trophic interactions. It is postulated that the second-order dynamics of S. bentincki and E. ringens in central-south Chile, may be the result from interactions with a specialist predator (the fishing fleet), interacting with exogenous environmental factors.  相似文献

BackgroundPsoriasis, a chronic skin disease with or without joint inflammation, has increased circulating proinflammatory cytokine levels. Vitamin D is involved in calcium homeostasis, bone formation, osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activity, as well as regulation of immune response. We aimed to study osteoclast differentiation and cytokine secretion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with psoriasis vulgaris and psoriatic arthritis, in response to 1,25(OH)2D3.MethodsSerum levels of bone turnover markers were measured by ELISA in patients with psoriasis vulgaris and psoriatic arthritis, and healthy controls. PBMCs were isolated and cultured with or without RANKL/M-CSF and 1,25(OH)2D3. Osteoclast differentiation and cytokine secretion were assessed.ResultsPsoriatic arthritis patients had lower osteocalcin, as well as higher C-telopeptide of type I collagen and cathepsin K serum levels compared with psoriasis vulgaris patients and controls. RANKL/M-CSF-stimulated PBMCs from psoriatic arthritis patients produced higher proinflammatory cytokine levels and had a differential secretion profile in response to 1,25(OH)2D3, compared with psoriasis vulgaris and control PBMCs.ConclusionsOur data confirmed altered bone turnover in psoriatic arthritis patients, and demonstrated increased osteoclastogenic potential and proinflammatory cytokine secretion capacity of these PBMCs compared with psoriasis vulgaris and controls. 1,25(OH)2D3 abrogated these effects.  相似文献

Species of the genus Ulva (Chlorophyta) are regarded as opportunistic organisms, which efficiently adjust their metabolism to the prevailing environmental conditions. In this study, changes in chlorophyll‐a fluorescence‐based photoinhibition of photosynthesis, electron transport rates, photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant metabolism were investigated during a diurnal cycle of natural solar radiation in summer (for 12 h) under two treatments: photosynthetically active radiation (PAR: 400–700 nm) and PAR+ ultraviolet (UV) radiation (280–700 nm). In the presence of PAR alone, Ulva rigida showed dynamic photoinhibition, and photosynthetic parameters and pigment concentrations decreased with the intensification of the radiation. On the other hand, under PAR+UV conditions a substantial decline up to 43% was detected and an incomplete fluorescence recovery, also, P‐I curve values remained low in relation to the initial condition. The phenolic compounds increased their concentration only in UV radiation treatments without showing a correlation with the antioxidant activity. The enzimatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased over 2‐fold respect at initial values during the onset of light intensity. In contrast, catalase (CAT) increased its activity rapidly in response to the radiation stress to reach maxima at 10 a.m. and decreasing during solar. The present study suggests that U. rigida is capable of acclimating to natural radiation stress relies on a concerted action of various physiological mechanisms that act at different times of the day and under different levels of environmental stress.  相似文献

A number of marine bivalve taxa, including species of the genus Ostrea, have adopted brooding of the young in the mantle cavity as a reproductive mechanism. In spite of the importance of brooding in the reproductive success of such species, little is known about the most important variables influencing the process, including those limiting clutch size. This study addresses the regulation of brood size in the hermaphroditic oyster Ostrea chilensis. During spawning, oysters released all their oocytes into the mantle cavity. No residual oocytes remained in the gonad, so a second spawning during the same brooding season was not possible. There was a weak correlation between the number of embryos incubated during the early phase of brooding and the dry tissue weight of the brooding oyster, and between the number incubated and the shell length of the brooding adult during the later phases of brooding. The number of embryos was also correlated with the area of the labial palps of the brooder during the later stages, suggesting that the loss of veligers observed at this time may be at least partially attributable to a limitation of space around the palps, which manipulate the larvae and with which the larvae are closely associated. The oxygen consumption rate of brooders incubating a normal clutch of embryos was not significantly different from that of oysters in which clutch size had been experimentally reduced by 50%. Experimental increase of the normal clutch size by 100% significantly increased the oxygen consumption of the brooder, suggesting that there is a physiological as well as a spatial limit to brood size. Thus the number of embryos brooded by an oyster is initially dependent on its production of oocytes and secondarily by the high metabolic costs of incubating large numbers of embryos. As development proceeds, space available for brooding apparently becomes a limiting factor as the larvae grow. The fate of the excess larvae is not known at present, but any larvae released prematurely cannot be competent to settle, since development is synchronous and there is a complete release of all pediveligers at the end of the brooding period.  相似文献

Background  

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) belong to a family of endocrine factors that share a highly conserved N-terminal region (amino acids 1-34) and play key roles in calcium homeostasis, bone formation and skeletal development. Recently, PTH-like peptide (PTH-L) was identified in teleost fish raising questions about the evolution of these proteins. Although PTH and PTHrP have been intensively studied in mammals their function in other vertebrates is poorly documented. Amphibians and birds occupy unique phylogenetic positions, the former at the transition of aquatic to terrestrial life and the latter at the transition to homeothermy. Moreover, both organisms have characteristics indicative of a complex system in calcium regulation. This study investigated PTH family evolution in vertebrates with special emphasis on Xenopus and chicken.  相似文献

Summary. Goldfish retinal explant outgrowth in the presence of fetal calf serum is stimulated by taurine. In the absence of it, but with glucose in the medium, length of neurites is still elevated by the amino acid. Using the medium in the presence of glucose, but in the absence of fetal calf serum, we explored the effect of optic tectum medium from cultures of them coming from goldfish without crush of the optic nerve or 3, 5, 10, 14 and 20 days after crush. Retinal explants, intact or from goldfish with crush of the optic nerve 10 days prior to starting the culture, were employed in order to measure the possible effect of optic tectum media and the inter action with taurine. In other type of experiments the optic nerve was crushed 1, 2, 4, 7 and 10 days before dissection of the optic tectum, and then co-cultured with intact or 10 days post-crush retinal explants. Optic tectum media produced a time-dependent effect on outgrowth in lesioned retinas with a maximum effect around 5 days after the lesion for the corresponding optic tectum. Taurine, 4 mM, did not further affect the outgrowth in the presence of optic tectum media, but did significantly increase length of neurites either in intact or in post-lesion retinas. Co-culture of optic tectum at different days post-lesion and retinas at 10 days post-lesion increased the outgrowth around 4 days post-lesion, in a preparation resulting in mutual effects of both types of tissues. The addition of taurine in these conditions did not further increase outgrowth, rather inhibited it according to the time after lesion of optic nerve corresponding to the co-cultured optic tectum. The effect of taurine was concentration-dependent, since 0.2 mM was more effective than 2 or 4 mM in the presence of optic tectum with lesion of 2 days. These results demonstrate the time-course of the regeneration processes in the visual system of goldfish, indicating the crucial periods after crush in which the tectum could produce stimulation and later decrease or no effect on outgrowth from the retina. In addition, they are evidences of the interaction between taurine and optic tectum production of time-produced specific agents. The mechanisms underlying these effects are closely related to calcium, as it was demonstrated by the addition of extracellular or intracellular chelators to the medium, which inhibited the effects of the optic tectum and the trophic properties of taurine in this system. The inhibitor of taurine transport, guanidoethylsulfonate, also decreased the stimulatory effects of the optic tectum and of taurine, indicating an interaction of substances produced by the tectum with taurine, and an effect of taurine mediated through its entrance to the cells. Overall, retinal explants outgrowth in the absence of fetal calf serum, the interaction of agents of the optic tectum and taurine modulates outgrowth from the retina, and these effects are mediated by calcium levels and by the levels of intracellular taurine.  相似文献

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a model eukaryotic organism for classical genetics and genomics, and yet its ecology is still largely unknown. In this work, a population genetic analysis was performed on five yeast populations isolated from wine-making areas with different enological practices using simple sequence repeats and restriction fragment length polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA as molecular markers on 292 strains. In accordance with other studies, genome size estimation suggests that native S. cerevisiae strains are mainly homothallic and diploids. Analysis of mtDNA data showed that yeast populations from nonindustrial areas have 40% higher genetic diversity than populations isolated from industrial areas, demonstrating that industrial enological practices are likely to affect native yeast populations negatively by reducing its biodiversity. On the other hand, genetic differentiation analysis based on their microsatellite showed no correlation between genetic and geographic distance and a nonsignificant value when a Mantel test was applied. Finally, in the five populations studied, positive inbreeding ( F is) values from 0.4 to 0.75, a low but significant level of linkage disequilibrium and a high number of multilocus genotypes were detected. These results strongly advocate that sexual reproduction is frequent enough to erase clonal signature in natural populations and that self-fertilization is the main mating system.  相似文献

Saccharomyces cerevisiae has proved to be an invaluable model in classical and molecular genetics studies. Despite several hundreds of isolates already available, the scientific community relies on the use of only a handful of unrelated strains. The lack of sequence information, haploid derivatives and genetic markers has prevented novel strains from being used. Here, we release a set of 55 S. cerevisiae and Saccharomyces paradoxus genetically tractable strains, previously sequenced in the Saccharomyces Genome Resequencing Project. These strains are stable haploid derivatives and ura3 auxotrophs tagged with a 6-bp barcode, recognized by a restriction enzyme to allow easy identification. We show that the specific barcode can be used to accurately measure the prevalence of different strains during competition experiments. These strains are now amenable to a wide variety of genetic experiments and can be easily crossed with each other to create hybrids and segregants, providing a valuable resource for breeding programmes and quantitative genetic studies. Three versions of each strain (haploid Mat a and Mat α and diploid Mat a /α all as ura3 ∷ KanMX-Barcode ) are available through the National Culture Yeast Collection.  相似文献
