Analysis of mitotic karyotypes of wild specimens of larvae of the Bactrocera tea-like fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Thailand has revealed seven distinct chromosome forms, based on the amount and distribution of heterochromatin in sex chromosomes and autosomes. Such cytological differences are perfecdy correlated with morphological observations and molecular genetics data. These findings clearly suggest that B. tau is a cluster of at least seven closely related species temporarily designated as species A (= B. tau) , B, C, D, E, F and G. On die basis of the gross quantity of heterochromatin accumulation in the genome, three groups of mitotic karyotypes can be recognized. Group 1 comprises species A and E. Species E specifically occurs only in fruits of Strychnos thorelii while species A attacks many kinds of host plants. Group 2 contains species B, F and G. Species B has been found only in Siphonodon celastrineus fruit, whereas species F and G attack die same host species, the medically important plant, Hydnocarpus anthelminthicus , albeit in different localities. Group 3 includes species C and D, each of which comprises larger amounts of pericentric heterochromatin in all chromosomes than die other two groups. Hence, diese two species are cytologically remote from those of groups 1 and 2. Species C and D occur allopatrically but they attack the same host plant species, Momordica cochinchinensis. Thus, genetic differentiation at the chromosomal level to specific host plant species and geographic isolation seem to play an important role in speciation of members of the B. tau complex.  相似文献

Two largely independent studies of chromosomes from natural populations of Anopheles maculatus provide evidence for several genetic species within the taxon. (1) Polytene chromosome variation shows four different rearrangements of arm 2 and three rearrangements of the X chromosome. There is strong evidence for three species. Two allopatric populations represent either dramatic geographic variation for two independent inversion systems within one of the genetic species, or represent two additional species. Their species status remains unresolved by this work. (2) Heterochromatic variation occurs in both X and Y chromosomes as revealed by Giemsa-banding of mitotic chromosomes from larval brains. The distribution and association of these various sex chromosomes give further evidence of a species complex. A preliminary correlation of these two kinds of chromosomal variation is given.  相似文献

The polytene chromosomes of 3347 larvae of the Simulium tuberosum group in Asia were analysed, representing the largest ever cytogenetic study of black flies in the Oriental Region. Band‐by‐band comparisons, relative to the established standard chromosome map for the subgenus Simulium, revealed 17 cytogenetically distinct taxa in Thailand, plus an 18th in China. Six of these taxa correspond to morphologically described species (S. doipuiense, S. rufibasis, S. setsukoae, S. tani, S. yuphae and S. weji). Recognition of the 18 taxa is based largely on unique inversions, either fixed or sex linked, primarily in the long arm of chromosome III. The greatest cytological diversity was discovered in the S. tani lineage, with ten cytoforms. This marked chromosomal diversification within S. tani is based largely on two inversions that have assumed different roles over evolutionary time, variously functioning in different combinations as fixed inversions, sex‐linked inversions and autosomal polymorphisms. Shared unique chromosomal features, relative to the subgeneric standard chromosome map, allowed evolutionary relationships among the cytotaxa to be inferred. Fluctuations in climate during the Pleistocene might have promoted differentiation of the Southeast Asian S. tuberosum group in isolated refugia such as mountains. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 289–315.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Sympatric occurrence of homozygotes for two electro-morphs controlled by a locus for octanol dehydrogenase, and the absence of heterozygotes, at two localities, indicates two isomorphic species within the taxon Anopheles minimus Theobald in Thailand. This view is supported by significant, relative deficiences of heterozygotes at other electromorphic loci. Gene frequency data are reported for seven electro-morphic loci in An.minimus sensu lato from eleven localities: one of the newly recognized species predominated in all but one locality and the second was confined to two localities. This species pair of An.minimus s.l. was clearly distinguished from An.aconitus Donitz, An.pampanai Biittiker & Beales and An.varuna Iyengar, three species closely related to An.minimus s.l. in the series Myzomyia of Anopheles subgenus Cellia.  相似文献

Mixtures of chromosomal forms A, B, C and D in natural populations of Anopheles dirus Peyton & Harrison sensu lato in Thailand show significant positive values of Wright's fixation index for six enzyme-electromorph loci. The mean value of FIS over all loci was found to be +0.28 (SD 0.02), with a range of +0.57 (Odh) to +0.10 (Idh-2). Partitioning electromorph data for the chromosomal forms reduces the mean FIS to 0.03 (SD 0.01), which suggests that positive assortative mating is a characteristic of each form. This supports the hypothesis that the chromosomal/electrophoretic forms A, B, C and D represent four distinct biological species within the An. dirus complex. An example is given of the use of enzyme electromorphs as a means of vector identification during a malaria entomological field study involving a mixture of An. dirus species A and D. Electromorph identifications of 323 sp. A and 161 sp. D were more than 98% correct when cross-referenced to specific DNA probes.  相似文献
