This paper presents a revision of the natatory isopod genus Coperonus (Munnopsidae, Lipomerinae). A key to identify all seven known species of the genus is provided. Four new species are described and Coperonus frigida (Vanhöffen, 1914) is redescribed on the basis of the type material. The biogeography of Coperonus is described.
In dieser Arbeit wird die Gattung Coperonus (Munnopsidae, Lipomerinae), deren Vertreter sich durch gute Schwimmfähigkeit auszeichnen, revidiert. Ein Bestimmungsschlüssel für alle sieben bisher bekannten Arten ist in der Arbeit enthalten. Es werden vier neue Arten beschrieben und Coperonus frigida (Vanhöffen, 1914) wird anhand des Typenmaterials nachbeschrieben. SUMMARY. 1. Field experiments were conducted to examine the impact of grazing invertebrates on periphyton biomass in twenty-one pools across three northern California coastal streams (U.S.A.): Big Sulphur Creek, the Rice Fork of the Eel River, and Big Canyon Creek. Periphyton accrual on artificial substrate tiles was compared in each stream between two treatments: those elevated slightly above the stream bottom to reduce access by grazers (= platforms) and those placed directly on the stream bottom to allow access by grazers (=controls).
2. Crawling invertebrate grazers (cased caddisflies and snails) were numerically dominant in each stream (86% of all grazers in Big Sulphur Creek, 61% in the Rice Fork, 84% in Big Canyon Creek). Platforms effectively excluded crawling grazers, but were less effective in excluding swimming mayfly grazers (Baetidae).

Periphyton biomass (as AFDM) on tiles was significantly lower on controls compared to platforms for the Rice Fork, an open-canopy stream, and Big Sulphur Creek, a stream with a heterogeneous canopy. In contrast, no grazer impact was found for Big Canyon Creek, a densely shaded stream. Here, extremely low periphyton biomass occurred for both treatments throughout the 60 day study.
4. The influence of riparian canopy on periphyton growth (i.e. accrual on platforms), grazer impact on periphyton, and grazer abundance was examined for Big Sulphur Creek. As canopy increased (15–98% cover), periphyton biomass on platforms decreased. In contrast, canopy had little influence on periphyton accrual on controls; apparently, grazers could maintain low periphyton standing crops across the full range of canopy levels. The abundance of one grazer species, the caddisfly Gumaga nigricula , was highest in open, sunlit stream pools; abundance of two other prominent grazers, Helicopsyche borealis (Trichoptera) and Centroptilum convexum (Ephemeroptera), however, was unrelated to canopy.  相似文献

The reproductive phase in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is affected by salinity, but little is known about the underlying cause. We investigated whether high concentrations of Na+ and Cl in the reproductive structures influence reproductive processes. Chickpea genotypes contrasting in tolerance were subjected to 0, 35 or 50 mm NaCl applied to soil in pots. Flower production and abortion, pod number, percentage of empty pods, seed number and size were evaluated. The concentrations of Na+, K+ and Cl were measured in various plant tissues and, using X‐ray microanalysis, in specific cells of developing reproductive structures. Genotypic variation in reproductive success measured as seed yield in saline conditions was associated with better maintenance of flower production and higher numbers of filled pods (and thus seed number), whereas seed size decreased in all genotypes. Despite the variation in reproductive success, the accumulation of Na+ and Cl in the early reproductive tissues of developing pods did not differ between a tolerant (Genesis836) and a sensitive (Rupali) genotype. Similarly, salinity tolerance was not associated with the accumulation of salt ions in leaves at the time of reproduction or in seeds at maturity.  相似文献

Fissarcturus bathyweddellensis sp. nov. and Fissarcturus sandwichi sp. nov. are described from the abyssal Southern Ocean near the Antarctic Peninsula and Fissarcturus rossi sp. nov. is described from the shallow Ross Sea. A list of all described species of Fissarcturus is given. The new species differ from recognized species of the genus in the following respects: F. bathyweddellensis can be distinguished based on spination on the dorsum of the body, which is described in detail herein. It is most similar to F. emarginatus Brandt, 1990, but this has, for example, a shorter and less stout second cephalic spine. F. rossi can also be distinguished from F. bathyweddellensis based on spine pattern. Whereas all dorsal spines of F. bathyweddellensis are smooth, those of F. rossi are covered with spinules. F. sandwichi can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the strong frontally bent supraocular spines (females with second cephalic spines) and dorsal body surface, which is covered with flat, cauliflower-like elevations in submedial, lateral and coxal rows.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 149 , 263–290.  相似文献

This study has demonstrated that in the ameba, Pelomyxa carolinensis Wilson (Chaos chaos L.) the limiting membranes of mitochondria and postdivision nuclei are often continuous. The morphological relationship may be functional in that it permits an exchange of material resulting directly or indirectly in an increased enzyme content of the mitochondria. It is suggested that through a series of progressive foldings of its envelope, the nucleus may be a site of formation of mitochondria.  相似文献

The Little Bustard has undergone a steep reduction of its Western Palaearctic range over the last century. In the west of France, breeding populations declined by 96% from 1978 to 2008 in cultivated areas where grasslands have been converted into intensively managed annual crops. Little Bustard abundance and nest productivity have been monitored since 1995 in a 450‐km2 site in western France. We assessed the proximate causes of the decline of Little Bustards in French farming landscapes and quantified the effectiveness of conservation measures that aimed to reverse the decline. The decline of Little Bustard, from about 65 males in 1995 to just six males in 2003, could be related to a near absence of recruitment over this period. Since 2004, the establishment of more than 1300 ha of specifically targeted agri‐environment schemes (AES) in the study site has led to a sharp increase in female productivity, mainly associated with nesting in AES fields. By imposing constraints on mowing dates, AES have prevented nest destruction and female mortality during mowing and, by increasing plant species diversity, provided chicks with a higher abundance of grasshoppers. This has contributed to reversing the trend, and increasing the population to around 30 males in 2009. Conservation strategies involving specifically targeted AES based on the identification of limiting factors can help to reverse the decline of threatened species.  相似文献

Background aims

Previous studies identified a circulating human osteoblastic population that expressed osteocalcin (OCN), increased following fracture and pubertal growth, and formed mineralized colonies in vitro and bone in vivo. A subpopulation expressed CD34, a hematopoietic/endothelial marker. These findings led to our hypothesis that hematopoietic-derived CD34+OCN+ cells exist in the circulation of mice and are modulated after fracture.

Methods

Flow cytometry was used to identify CD34+OCN+ cells in male B6.SJL-PtprcaPepcb/BoyJ and Vav-Cre/mTmG (VavR) mice. Non-stabilized tibial fractures were created by three-point bend. Fractures were longitudinally imaged by micro-computed tomography, and immunofluorescent staining was used to evaluate CD34+OCN+ cells within fracture callus. AMD3100 (10 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously for 3 days and the CD34+OCN+ population was evaluated by flow cytometry.

Results

Circulating CD34+OCN+ cells were identified in mice and confirmed to be of hematopoietic origin (CD45+; Vav1+) using two mouse models. Both circulating and bone marrow-derived CD34+OCN+ cells peaked three weeks post-non-stabilized tibial fracture, suggesting association with cartilage callus transition to bone and early mineralization. Co-expression of CD34 and OCN in the fracture callus at two weeks post-fracture was observed. By three weeks, there was 2.1-fold increase in number of CD34+OCN+ cells, and these were observed throughout the fracture callus. AMD3100 altered CD34+OCN+ cell levels in peripheral blood and bone marrow.

Discussion

Together, these data demonstrate a murine CD34+OCN+ circulating population that may be directly involved in fracture repair. Future studies will molecularly characterize CD34+OCN+ cells, determine mechanisms regulating their contribution, and examine if their number correlates with improved fracture healing outcomes.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The morphology of living amoebae during pinocytosis is described. These observations are correlated with observations on stained sections of amoebae fixed during pinocytosis.
  • 2.2. Immediately before pinocytosis, wrinkling of the plasmalemma was observed. Wrinkling was followed by invagination of the plasmalemma which resulted in tunnels into the cytoplasm. These tunnels were then separated from the plasmalemma and were often broken up into droplets.
  • 3.3. PAS and antibody staining procedures confirmed the observation that the pinocytosis vacuole membrane is derived from the plasmalemma.
  • 4.4. All solutions of charged molecules which were tested, including many proteins and salts, were found to induce pinocytosis. Their activity was dependent to some extent on their concentration.
  • 5.5. By fluorescence labeling techniques it was demonstrated that proteins are adsorbed to the plasmalemma. Salt solutions which caused pinocytosis were shown to cause a swelling of the outer coat of the plasmalemma.
  • 6.6. A mechanism for pinocytosis is suggested which relates adsorption of charged solutes on the plasmalemma to a decrease in the tension and the structural rigidity of the membrane. The weakened membrane is drawn down into the cytoplasm by its “points of attachment” to the contractile plasmagel system. These invaginations become detached from the membrane and freed in the cytoplasm as pinocytosis droplets or vacuoles.
