BIOVOLUME CALCULATION FOR PELAGIC AND BENTHIC MICROALGAE   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
Microalgal biovolume is commonly calculated to assess the relative abundance (as biomass or carbon) of co-occurring algae varying in shape and/or size. However, a standardized set of equations for biovolume calculations from microscopically measured linear dimensions that includes the entire range of microalgal shapes is not available yet. In comparison with automated methods, the use of microscopical measurements allows high taxonomic resolution, up to the species level, and has fewer sources of error. We present a set of geometric shapes and mathematical equations for calculating biovolumes of >850 pelagic and benthic marine and freshwater microalgal genera. The equations are designed to minimize the effort of microscopic measurement. The similarities and differences between our proposal for standardization and previously published proposals are discussed and recommendations for quality standards given.  相似文献

Microautoradiography was used to screen natural phytoplankton populations from Lake Kinneret for their ability to take up radioactive organic substrates (glucose, acetic acid, amino acids, and glycollic acid. Several of the important Chlorophyta (Pediastrum spp.,Actinastrum hantzschii, Kirchncriella spp.,Coelastrum spp.,Scenedesmus spp., andTetraëdron spp.) and Cyanophyta (Microcystis spp.,Merismopedia sp.,Chroococcus spp., andAnabaena spp.) showed consistent organic uptake. However, the principal bloom former, the dinoflagellatePeridinium cinctum fawestii and most of the pelagic algae observed, never assimilated any of the above substrates. Autoradiographic surveys permit rapid screening of algal populations for species which are capable of taking up organic matter and can indicate potential facultative heterotrophs.  相似文献

Lowering of water level and algal biomass in Lake Kinneret   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
An unusual situation accompanied the rapid lowering of the lake level which took place during the period 1972–1975 as a result of low amounts of precipitation. The dominant alga of the lake (Peridinium cinctum f. westii), usually blooming from January to May, developed two months later than in previous years. The small and short peak of diatoms and green algae, which used to appear in January, extended until march, delaying the appearance of the winter bloom. The replacement of the non-grazed Peridinium having a high C : P ratio by the actively grazed diatoms and green algae having a low C : P ratio led to a substantial decrease of algal standing crop in the water. The chain of limnological events leading to the biological modification is investigated and its bearing on water quality is discussed.  相似文献

The impact of iron and chelators on Lake Kinneret phytoplankton   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The response of natural phytoplankton populations from LakeKinneret to the addition of iron (Fe) and chelator (EDTA) wastested by following growth patterns and determining the algalcomposition initially and at the end of the experiments; algalgrowth rates and yield were measured by in vivo chlorophyllfluorescence. Although the pattern of growth response varied,usually some stimulation of phytoplankton growth rate and yieldwas observed with chelator and/or Fe addition in comparisonto unsupplemented samples. However, the major impact of Fe andEDTA on the phytoplankton appeared to be expressed as changesin the algal population composition. There were clear taxonomicdifferences in the response to Fe addition, which in nearlyall experiments stimulated outgrowth of Bacillanophyta and Chlorophyta,compared with the effect of EDTA alone or with Fe which enhancedthe development of Cyanophyta, in addition to Bacillariophyta.The availability of Fe and/or chelators therefore appears tobe important in determining the composition of the phytoplanktonpopulations in Lake Kinneret and presumably in other aquaticenvironments.  相似文献

Photosynthetic pigments extracted from the paniculate materialof the water column of Lake Kinneret were studied throughoutthe periods of May 1988-June 1989, and November 1993-November1994, by means of HPLC. The temporal and vertical variationof the pigment suite found agreed with the microscopically determinedphytoplankton record. The regression calculations of taxon-specificbiomass with the corresponding signature pigments suggest thatpigment analysis may be a useful tool for the monitoring ofbloom-forming species, e.g. the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunenseNygaard. The HPLC pigment analysis permitted the identificationand quantification of chlorophyll degradation products, providingfor the first time information about their composition in LakeKinneret. Chlorophyllide a was the major detectable degradationproduct of chlorophyll a, varying between 1 and 9% of the chlorophylla concentration. Other chlorophyll a derivatives appeared mostlyin minor quantities. Pheophytin a was virtually lacking in allthe samples. Removal rates of pigments, measured by sedimentationtraps, indicated that the degradation of chlorophyll a via chlorophyllidea is a dynamic process that continues during the sedimentationof the phytoplankton particles.  相似文献

Phytoplankton periodicity in a subtropical lake (Lake Kinneret,Israel)   总被引:5,自引:5,他引:0  
Lake kinneret is a subtropical monomictic lake characterized by a Pyrrhophyta-Chlorophyta assemblage, supplemented by Cyanophyta in some years. Concerning their abundance and seasonal occurrence, the phytoplanktonic algae belong to two groups: algae appearing in quantity at a definite annual period and algae present throughout the year. Four stages of algal succession occur in the lake. There is a marked periodicity in the phytoplankton composition with a high standing stock in winter-spring, due to the dinoflagellate water-bloom, and a low one during the summer months, related to the high stability of summer stratification. The annual succession at the species level has been an almost constant event in the lake for many years.The increase in nutrient concentrations in 1973 and 1974 increased the diversity and abundance of algae (except Peridinium) but did not lead to significant changes in algal succession. Conversely, the decrease of the zooplankton grazing pressure in 1975 and 1976 facilitated the development of algal maxima during summer-fall. They were caused by nanoplanktonic forms, and they developed without additional enrichment of nutrients. The algal abundance and diversity decreased. The years 1981 and 1982 were characterized by both an increase in phosphorus and a decrease in zooplankton. These conditions favored the concomitant abundance of many species and an increase of non-Pyrrhophyta biomass.  相似文献

The yearly bloom of Peridinium cinctum f. westii (Lemm.) Lef. in Lake Kinneret is described and compared with the distribution of dinoflagellates in other freshwater bodies. The physical conditions required by the Wyatt and Horwood model do not fit the actual physical events accompanying the onset of the bloom. In situ measurements of the percentage of cells in division were undertaken to clarify various points about the internal dynamics of the population. The exponential increase of the population occurs when the diurnal percentage of cells in division is not higher than 10–15%. This percentage increases up to 45% in late February–March, but does not cause any increase of population. At this period, the loss rate is nearly equal to the rate of cell increase and is interpreted as massive mortality.  相似文献

The phytoplankton of Lake Kinneret, a warm monomictic lake,is dominated by a Pyrrhophyta-Chlorophyta assemblage. Four stagesof succession of planktonic algae occur in the lake, startingwith thermal and chemical destratification and ending with stratification. The index of diversity of the phytoplankton communities is highduring the destratification and mixed periods. The index reachesminimal values during late summer, when the ecosystem is subjectto strong physical, chemical and biological stresses. The diversityin Lake Kinneret increases with the increase in nutrients andnot with the increase in temperature. During most of the year, the nanoplanktonic forms are in greaternumbers than the netplankton species. This fact is correlatedwith the amounts of available nutrients in the lake. The annual averages of the wet autotrophic biomass in Lake Kinneretare very high in comparison with other warm lakes. The contributionof the nanoplanktonic species to the total algal biomass isvery small during the Peridinium bloom, but represents approximatelyhalf of the total algal biomass during the rest of the year. The concentration of nutrients in the water, together with theadverse competitive effect of Peridinium on other algae, areto a large extent responsible for the composition, successionand abundance of the phytoplankton assemblages in Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

This paper examines certain key concepts of the ‘ontological turn’ in anthropology, with a view to a clearer understanding of its proposed methodology. It situates the ontological approach within the historical and intellectual conflicts through which it arose, outlining its motivations and the challenges it poses to traditional fieldwork methods and theory. The concepts of ‘radical alterity’ and ‘incommensurability’ are examined as intellectual as well as political concepts, highlighting their historical contingency on the politics of colonisation. Following from this, the notion of ‘ontological self-determination’ is analysed with respect to my fieldwork with the Dongria Kondh in the Niyamgiri Hills in Odisha, India; I show how an application of the ontological methodology allows a better understanding of certain conflicts within current discourses and practices of nationhood and development.  相似文献
