The biomass of submerged aquatic plant communities was studied periodically during two annual growth periods. Najas minor contributed 78% to the total standing biomass. Ceratophyllum demersum, Hydrilla, Nelumbo nucifera, Trapa bispinosa and Potamogeton crispus contributed towards the rest of the biomass. Background
Distraction osteogenesis is the standard treatment for the management of lower limb length discrepancy of more than 3 cm and bone loss secondary to congenital anomalies, trauma or infection. This technique consists of an osteotomy of the bone to be lengthened, application of an external fixator, followed by gradual and controlled distraction of the bone ends. Although limb lengthening using the Ilizarov distraction osteogenesis principle yields excellent results in most cases, the technique has numerous problems and is not well tolerated by many children. The objective of the current study is to determine if Botulinum Toxin A (BTX-A), which is known to possess both analgesic and paralytic actions, can be used to alleviate post-operative pain and improve the functional outcome of children undergoing distraction osteogenesis.Methods/Design
The study design consists of a multi centre, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Patients between ages 5–21 years requiring limb lengthening or deformity correction using distraction will be recruited from 6 different sites (Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Portland as well as DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware and Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ont). Approximately 150 subjects will be recruited over 2 years and will be randomized to either receive 10 units per Kg of BTX-A or normal saline (control group) intraoperatively following the surgery. Functional outcome effects will be assessed using pain scores, medication dosages, range of motion, flexibility, strength, mobility function and quality of life of the patient. IRB approval was obtained from all sites and adverse reactions will be monitored vigorously and reported to IRB, FDA and Health Canada.Discussion
BTX-A injection has been widely used world wide with no major side effects reported. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time BTX-A is being used under the context of limb lengthening and deformity correction.Trial Registration

Temperature is one of the ubiquitous signals that control both the development as well as virulence of various microbial species. Therefore their survival is dependent upon initiating appropriate response upon temperature fluctuations. In particular, pathogenic microbes exploit host-temperature sensing mechanisms for triggering the expression of virulence genes. Many studies have revealed that the biomolecules within a cell such as DNA, RNA, lipids and proteins help in sensing change in temperature, thereby acting as thermosensors. Abstract Molecular modeling and energy minimisation calculations have been used to investigate the interaction of chromium(III) complexes in different ligand environments with various sequences of B-DNA. The complexes are [Cr(salen)(H2O)2]+; salen denotes 1, 2 bis-salicylideneaminoethane, [Cr(salprn)(H2O)2]+; salprn denotes 1, 3 bis- salicylideneamino-propane, [Cr(phen)3]3+; phen denotes 1, 10 phenanthroline and [Cr(en)3]3+; en denotes eth- ylenediamine. All the chromium(III) complexes are interacted with the minor groove and major groove of d(AT)12, d(CGCGAATTCGCG)2 and d(GC)12 sequences of DNA. The binding energy and hydrogen bond parameters of DNA-Cr complex adduct in both the groove have been determined using molecular mechanics approach. The binding energy and formation of hydrogen bonds between chromium(III) complex and DNA has shown that all complexes of chromium(III) prefer minor groove interaction as the favourable binding mode. 相似文献

The aim was to evaluate the performance of selected individual MHC class I and class II alpha (A) alleles, and combinations of these on disease resistance against infectious salmon anaemia (ISA). The material consisting of 1966 fish from seven families, contained five MHC class I alleles and four MHC class II A alleles. Which representing given class II A and class II beta (B) haplotypes, totalling 19 MHC class I and class II A genotypes. The fish were challenged with infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV), the virus causing ISA. Dead fish were collected daily during the challenge experiment and the survivors were collected at termination. All fish were genotyped for MHC class I and class II A. The total mortality in the material was 85.14%. For MHC class I, UBA*0201 and UBA*0301 were significantly the most resistant alleles, while UBA*0601 for class I and DAA*0301 for class II A were the significantly most susceptible alleles. The analysis of combined MHC class I and class II A genotypes detected that fish with the genotype UBA*0201/*0301;DAA*0201/*0201 were the most resistant fish with a hazard ratio (HR) at 0.750, while the fish with the genotypes UBA*0601/*0801;DAA*0501/*0501 and UBA*0201/*0301;DAA*0301/*0501 were the most susceptible fish with HR of 1.334 and 1.425. In addition, Cox regression analysis within family detected combined MHC class I and class II A genotypes that contributed significantly to resistance and susceptibility. Changes in odor quality discrimination following recovery from olfactory nerve transection 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Following recovery from olfactory nerve transection, animals regain their
ability to discriminate between odors. Odor discrimination is restored
after new neurons establish connections with the olfactory bulb. However,
it is not known if the new connections alter odor quality perception. To
address this question, 20 adult hamsters were first trained to discriminate
between cinnamon and strawberry odors. After reaching criterion (> or =
90% correct response), half of the animals received a bilateral nerve
transection (BTX) and half a surgical sham procedure. Animals were not
tested again until day 40, a point in recovery when connections are
re-established with the bulb. When BTX animals were tested without food
reinforcement, they could not perform the odor discrimination task. Sham
animals, however, could discriminate, demonstrating that the behavioral
response had not been extinguished during the 40 day period. When
reinforcement was resumed, BTX animals were able to discriminate between
cinnamon and strawberry after four test sessions. In addition, their
ability to discriminate between these two familiar odors was no different
than that of BTX and sham animals tested with two novel odors, baby powder
and coffee. These findings suggest that, after recovery from nerve
transection, there are alterations in sensory perception and that
restoration of odor quality discrimination requires that the animal must
again learn to associate individual odor sensations with a behavioral
response.

Anthocyanin from strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) with the novel aglycone, 5-carboxypyranopelargonidin 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An anthocyanin, 1, with the novel 4-substituted aglycone, 5-carboxypyranopelargonidin, was isolated in small amounts from the acidified, methanolic extract of strawberries, Fragaria ananassa Duch., by preparative HPLC after purification by partition against ethyl acetate, Amberlite XAD-7 and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. It was identified mainly by 2D NMR spectroscopy and electrospray LC-MS as the 3-O-beta-glucopyranoside of 5-carboxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,8-dihydroxy-pyrano[4,3,2-de]-1-benzopyrylium, an anthocyanidin which is homologous to 5-carboxypyranomalvidin (vitisidin A) reported in red wines and 5-carboxypyranocyanidin recently isolated from red onions. By comparison of UV-Vis absorption spectra, 1 showed in contrast to 2, pelargonidin 3-O-beta-glucopyranoside, a local absorption peak around 360 nm, a hypsochromic shift (8 nm) of the visible absorption maximum, and lack of a distinct UV absorption peak around 280 nm. The similarities between the absorption spectra of 1 in various acidic and neutral buffer solutions implied restricted formation of the instable colourless equilibrium forms, which are typical for most anthocyanins in weakly acidic solutions. The molar absorptivity (epsilon) of 1 varied little with pH contrary to similar values of for instance the major anthocyanin in strawberry, 2. However, 2 revealed higher epsilon-values than 1 at all pH values except 5.1. At pH 5.1, the epsilon-value of 1 (6250) was nearly four times the corresponding value of 2 (1720), which showed the potential of 5-carboxypyranopelargonidin derivatives as colorants in solutions with pH around 5. The colours of 1 and 2 in buffered solutions with pH 1.1 and pH 6.9 have been described by the CIELAB coordinates h(ab) (hue angle), C* (chroma), and L* (lightness). 相似文献

A Schiff base complex of chromium(III), transdiaqua[N,N'ethylenebis (salicylideneimine)chromium(III)]perchlorate, [Cr(salen)(OH(2))(2)](+), was found to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of Shigella dysenteriae. The chromium(III) complex was found to cure (remove) the invasive plasmid and thereby render the microbe more sensitive to the tested antibiotics. The loss in the catalytic activity of the isolated endo-alpha-N-acetyl galactosaminidase on mucin as a substrate was also observed in the presence of [Cr(salen)(OH(2))(2)](+). This suggests that [Cr(salen)(OH(2))(2)](+) is toxic to the microbe and could make the microbe non-pathogenic and non-invasive, thus establishing its role in microbiological applications to reduce the toxic potentials of a microbe. 相似文献
