Five cladoceran zooplankton species in a Venezuelan floodplainlake, Laguna la Orsinera, were analyzed to identify factorscontrolling their dynamics over a period encompassing isolation, inundation by the Orinoco River and drainage. The abundanceof each species increased rapidly to a maximum associated withflooding of the lake by the Orinoco River. We calculated birth, death and population growth rates, and developed a method forestimating uncertainty in these parameters, in order to interpretobserved cladoceran abundance patterns. Rapid increases in populationsizes resulted both from high birth rates associated with decreasingturbidity following inundation and from the hatching of restingeggs. Birth rates remained high throughout the study, but highdeath rates restricted each population to a brief maximum andthen maintained small population sizes throughout the remainderof the study. Our demographic analyses suggest that high mortalityresulted from intense predation by fish and by Chaoborus larvae, rather than from resource limitation, and that this mortalitywas the major factor regulating cladoceran abundance duringinundation and drainage in this tropical floodplain lake.  相似文献

The binding of 14CH3- initiation factor 3 (IF3) to polynucleotides is strongly dependent upon the concentration of added salt. The observed association constant, Kobs, increases by ca. a factor of 10(2) when the NaCl concentration is lowered from 200 to 100 mM for the binding of 14CH3-IF3 to all nucleic acids examined. This salt-dependent binding suggests that at physiological salt concentrations the formation of an IF3-polynucleotide complex is primarily driven by the release of cations from the nucleic acid, although anion effects are involved also. For single-stranded nucleic acids, nonelectrostatic interactions may contribute a factor of 10(2) to the value of Kobs, although accurate assessment of these interactions is complicated by anion effects. The binding of 14CH3-IF3 to the double helix, poly(A).poly(U), appears to be exclusively electrostatic. 14CH3-IF3 forms a maximum of 8 +/- 2 ion pairs with most single-stranded polynucleotides. The value of Kobs increases from ca. 10(3) to 10(5) M-1 when the NaCl concentration is lowered from 200 to 100 mM for the binding of 14CH3-IF3 to poly(A), poly(C), poly(U), and poly(A).poly(U). At physiological salt concentrations, IF3 shows no preference for any of these bases or for single or double-stranded structures. However, 14CH3-IF3 binds ca. 60 times greater to poly(A,G), at al NaCl concentrations examined, than to the other nucleic acids, indicating that IF3 has some preference for guanine-containing polynucleotides. The presence of 10 mM Mg2+ tends to reduce the value of Kobs at any given NaCl concentration, but to a smaller degree than predicted by simply a competition between Mg2+ and IF3 for the nucleic acid lattice.  相似文献

Metamorphosis is a common life-cycle transition in organisms as diverse as amphibians, insects, fishes and crustaceans, and the timing of this transition often affects an individual's fitness. Here, we measured age and size at metamorphosis in laboratory-reared individuals of the freshwater copepod, Diaptomus leptopus , and then followed individuals over their entire life cycle to assess the fitness consequences of variation in age and size at metamorphosis. In 3 separate experiments, individuals were raised in different food conditions: low food (0.2 μg C/ml) switched to high food (0.7 μg C/ml), or high food switched to low food, at several different larval and juvenile stages. Control individuals were reared on high or low food concentrations over their entire life cycles. For each individual, we measured age and size at metamorphosis and age and size at maturity; for females, we also measured total lifetime egg production, longevity, and calculated a composite fitness measure, λ. Statistical analyses showed no significant effects of age or size at metamorphosis on these same traits measured at maturity, or on the fitness components we estimated. The first individuals to mature had the highest total egg production and individual fitness; differences in body size at maturation explained none of the variation observed in fitness components. Our results show that metamorphosis was uncoupled from maturity and from fitness components by growth and development achieved during the juvenile phase of the life cycle, and support the conclusion that fitness consequences of metamorphosis depend fundamentally on the organization of an organism's life cycle. They also suggest that body size plays a different life-history role in these organisms than is recognized in most poikilotherms, and suggest the hypothesis, based on laboratory experiments, that selection may act primarily on juvenile developmental rates in field populations.  相似文献

Body size affects survival probabilities, reproductive output and individual fitness in many organisms. In freshwater zooplankton, traits ranging from demographic rates to community composition depend on body size, and predation is most often identified as the selection pressure determining body size. We examined the extent to which stage-specific growth trajectories and body sizes of copepod crustaceans are constrained, independent of selection. We used exuviae shed at each molt to quantify the relationship between size at molting and growth during the subsequent instar for two common, herbivorous calanoid copepods, Boeckella triarticulata and Diaptomus leptopus. Individuals of both species were raised under diets of different food quality or quantity, and at different temperatures. Size at molting varied little among individuals of both species, as a consequence of a persistent negative relationship between size at molting and subsequent (absolute) growth increment. Individuals that were small when they molted grew more during the subsequent instar than individuals that were large. This relationship was statistically significant for nearly all instars of both species raised in different food or temperature conditions, and not affected by food quality, food quantity or temperature. Our results indicate that body size is constrained or regulated over much of the copepod life cycle, independent of the effects of environmental conditions (food, temperature, predation). At least 13 genes control the establishment of dorsoventral polarity in the Drosophila embryo and more than 30 genes control the anteroposterior pattern of body segments. Each group of genes is thought to control pattern formation along one body axis, independently of the other group. We have used the expression of the fushi tarazu (ftz) segmentation gene as a positional marker to investigate the relationship between the dorsoventral and anteroposterior axes. The ftz gene is normally expressed in seven transverse stripes. Changes in the striped pattern in embryos mutant for other genes (or progeny of females homozygous for maternal-effect mutations) can reveal alterations of cell fate resulting from such mutations. We show that in the absence of any of ten maternal-effect dorsoventral polarity gene functions, the characteristic stripes of ftz protein are altered. Normally there is a difference between ftz stripe spacing on the dorsal and ventral sides of the embryo; in dorsalized mutant embryos the ftz stripes appear to be altered so that dorsal-type spacing occurs on all sides of the embryo. These results indicate that cells respond to dorsoventral positional information in establishing early patterns of gene expression along the anteroposterior axis and that there may be more significant interactions between the different axes of positional information than previously determined.  相似文献

Variation in the abundance of animals has traditionally been explained as the outcome of endogenous forcing from density dependence and exogenous forcing arising from variation in weather and predation. Emerging evidence suggests that the effects of density dependence interact with external influences on population dynamics. In particular, spatial heterogeneity in resources and the presence of capable predators may weaken feedbacks from density dependence to growth of populations. We used the Kalman filter to analyze 23 time series of estimates of abundance of northern ungulate populations arrayed along a latitudinal gradient (latitude range of 40°–70°N) to evaluate the influence of spatial heterogeneity in resources and predation on density dependence. We also used contingency tables to test whether density dependence was independent of the presence of carnivores (our estimate of predation) and multiple regressions to determine the effects of spatial heterogeneity in resources, predation, and latitude on the strength of density dependence. Our results showed that the strength of density dependence of ungulate populations was low in the presence of large carnivores, particularly at northern latitudes with low primary productivity. We found that heterogeneity in elevation, which we assume acted as a surrogate for spatial heterogeneity in plant phenology, also reduced effects of density dependence. Thus, we show that external forces created by heterogeneity in resources and predation interact with internal feedbacks from population density to shape dynamics of populations of northern ungulates.  相似文献

Pathways for regulation of signaling by transforming growth factor-β family members are poorly understood at present. The best genetically characterized member of this family is encoded by the Drosophila gene decapentaplegic (dpp), which is required for multiple events during fly development. We describe here the results of screens for genes required to maximize dpp signaling during embryonic dorsal-ventral patterning. Screens for genetic interactions in the zygote have identified an allele of tolloid, as well as two novel alleles of screw, a gene recently shown to encode another bone morphogenetic protein-like polypeptide. Both genes are required for patterning the dorsalmost tissues of the embryo. Screens for dpp interactions with maternally expressed genes have identified loss of function mutations in Mothers against dpp and Medea. These mutations are homozygous pupal lethal, engendering gut defects and severely reduced imaginal disks, reminiscent of dpp mutant phenotypes arising during other dpp-dependent developmental events. Genetic interaction phenotypes are consistent with reduction of dpp activity in the early embryo and in the imaginal disks. We propose that the novel screw mutations identified here titrate out some component(s) of the dpp signaling pathway. We propose that Mad and Medea encode rate-limiting components integral to dpp pathways throughout development.  相似文献

To quantify the demographic effects of food quality, and specificallyof the ‘poorquality’ cyanobecterium Anabaena flos-aquae,we reared individual Boeckella triarticulata (Copepoda, Calanoida)on two diets (monospecific Cryptomom sp. versus mixed Cryptomonas-Anabanmadiets) and quantified individual growth and developmental trajectoriesby examining exuviae produced at each molt, from hatching tomaturity. Size at molting was less variable among individuals, within and between diets, than age. Food quality had significanteffects on male sizes at molting and on stage-specific dailygrowth rates of both sexes; these effects were strongest duringlate naupliar and all copepodite stages Tke med Cryptomonas-Anabaenadiet significantly slowed development, particularly of copepoditestages. As a consequence of these effects, individuals raisedon the mixed diet were smaller and older at maturity. Withina given diet, individual differences explained much, if notmost, of the variation exhibited in growth and development.By following growth and development of a large number of individualsthroughout their Life cycles, we show that individual femalesproduce variable offspring, indicative of a bet-hedging life-historystrategy, and that B.triarticulata (like other calanoids) cangrow, develop and survive on diets that include ‘poorquality’ cyanobacteria. 1Present address: Department of Biological Sciences, Universityof Rhode Island, Kingston, RI 02881, USA  相似文献
