Summary In comparison with intact yeast, dehydrated-rehydrated cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae show significantly higher ethanol production from exogenous substrate under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions, particularly when low concentration (0.1%) of glucose are used. For populations with a higher percentage of viable rehydrated cells (above 70%) a more notable decrease in the Pasteur effect (the difference between the quantity of ethanol formed under anaerobic and aerobic conditions) is observed. 相似文献

The courtship of 5 jacks was evaluated weekly for 12 mo. The characteristics of sexual behavior were recorded before the collection of 2 ejaculates, at 4-h intervals, into an artificial vagina in the presence of a female in either natural or induced estrus. The maximum time given to the jack to perform the ejaculatory mount was 1 h. If the jacks did not ejaculate, another attempt was made the following week. At the time of collection, the male and female remained free in a paddock (20 m2). The data presented in this study is based on results in which the first and second ejaculates occurred successively. Statistical analysis was done by a 2 x 2 factorial design in randomized blocks. The mean +/- SEM of sexual behavior characteristics for the first and second ejaculate were, respectively: time until first mount = 0.7 +/- 0.2 and 0.9 +/- 0.2 min; time until first erection = 11.9 +/- 1.1 and 11.6 +/- 1.1 min; time until ejaculation = 15.0 +/- 1.2 and 13.6 +/- 1.2 min; frequency of partial exposure of penis = 3.4 +/- 0.4 and 3.2 +/- 0.4; frequency of total exposure of penis = 1.0 + 0.2 and 1.1 +/- 0.2; frequency of flehmen responses = 6.6 +/- 0.5 and 4.6 +/-0.5; frequency of erections = 1.3 +/- 0.1 and 1.2 +/- 0.1; frequency of retreats away from the female = 1.8 +/- 0.2 and 1.0 +/- 0.2; frequency of mounts with erection but without ejaculation = 0.3 +/- 0.1 and 0.1 +/- 0.1; frequency of mounts without erection = 2.0 +/-0.1 and 1.2 +/- 0.1 ; and frequency of pelvic copulatory movements = 4.8 +/- 0.4 and 4.4 +/- 0.4. Individual differences were observed (P<0.05) for partial and total exposure, flehmen responses, mounts without erection and pelvic copulatory movements. The variables flehmen responses, retreats away from the female and mounts without erection showed significant differences (P<0.05) between ejaculates. Seasonal effects on sexual behavior characteristics were not found. However, a monthly effect was noted for flehmen responses, partial exposure of the penis, mounts without erection, retreats away from the female and pelvic copulatory movements when the 2 ejaculates were combined. 相似文献

Most of the degradation was found to occur at the first stage of cell dehydration when free water was removed from the cells. Phase transitions in organic and inorganic materials are well-studied classical phenomena, where a change in the crystal space group symmetry induces a wide variation of physical properties, permitted by the crystalline symmetry in each phase. Here we observe a conformational induced transition in bioinspired peptide nanotubes (PNTs). We found that the PNTs change their original molecular assembly from a linear peptide conformation to a cyclic one, followed by a change of the nanocrystalline structure from a noncentrosymmetric hexagonal space group to a centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group. The observed transition is irreversible and induces a profound variation in the PNTs properties, from the microscopic to the macroscopic level. In this context, we follow the unique changes in the molecular, morphological, piezoelectric, second harmonic generation, and wettability properties of the PNTs. 相似文献

Summary It has been shown that dehydration markedly affects the activity of a number of enzymes connected with energy metabolism in
the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae. Independently of the drying method used, there was found to be an inverse relationship between the activity of mitochondrial
enzymes — NADH-dehydrogenase (EC 1.6.2.1), succinate dehydrogenase (EC 1.3.99.1) and cytochrome C oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) - and
the viability of yeast cells at the stationary growth phase. Dehydration led to an increase in activity only in exogenous
NADH-dehydrogenase compared with activity in the initial compressed yeast.
On the basis of alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.1) and catalase (EC 1.11.1.6) as examples, an ambivalent effect of the dehydration
process on the activity of cytoplasmic enzymes has been demonstrated.
The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the activity of individual electron-transport enzymes in yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae is a sufficiently sensitive to be used as an indicator of the physiological state and to monitor a microbial biomass dehydration

Biochemical functions of certain amino acids and their role in improving fodder protein are described. Different aspects of biological significance of proteins and methods of its increase are discussed. It is indicated that concentrates prepared from green plants and starch- and cellulose-containing materials proteinized under the action of microorganisms can be used as an additional source of fodder protein. It is demonstrated that lysine and tryptophane concentrates can be effectively applied to raise the nutrient properties of fodder protein.
